MLBPA Special Assistant Kevin Slowey

I was reading this article about David Price's wind-up issues, when I saw this:

"MLBPA special assistant Kevin Slowey recently informed Price that umpires are evidently uncomfortable with the way the lefty sets up when in the wind-up or stretch, suggesting there might be too much deception."

Apparently, Slowey's been working for the MLBPA since June of 2015. Seems like a good fit.

SInce we enjoy predicting the future so much here at Twins Daily, that got me wondering what predictions you'd make for careers outside of baseball for past and present Twins players.

Here's a few that seem likely or approriate to me:

Justin Morneau - Consultant to Bauer or CCM.

JC Romero - Runs a successful string of barber shops in Puerto Rico

Joe Mauer -  Makes the occasional promotional appearance for the family car dealership. Assumes Harmon's old role as Twins ambassador of good will.

Maybe a better question would be - which current or former Twins players seem likely to continue in baseball once their playing careers have ended?

Seems to me that when Gardenhire infamously demoted Slowey to the pen in favor of the ineffective but expensive Nick Blackburn we heard all kinds of leaks about how he was petulant and a malcontent.

That doesn't sound like a guy who would be hired by the MLBPA to stick up for other players.

I'd think the guys that they hire tend to be the players who are vocal and stand up for themselves and others when they don't think management is doing the right thing by them. Hmmmm...

It never ceases to amaze me how fans take the organization's side so often. Like the people in power are usually the good guys in a conflict...

There was no right answer in the Slowey vs Blackburn debate.

There was no right answer in the Slowey vs Blackburn debate.

While my disagreement with that is debatable, the right answer for the Twins was probably not to leak to the media that Slowey was a cancer and was faking an injury to avoid pitching in the pen.

Even if both things happened to be accurate.

Souhan absolutely ripped Slowey to shreds back when he was sent to the bullpen and didn't fare well.  I obviously have no clue what really went on inside the clubhouse, but in all of the interviews I read or saw with Slowey he seemed very intelligent, kind, and articulate - not at all petulant or a malcontent. My impression, and this is 100% speculation, was that he operated on a different intellectual level and had a different approach to life than most of the other players or coaches, sort of like Robert Smith was with the Vikings, and as a result didn't "fit in" to the "clubhouse culture".  I felt like Souhan had some sort of odd personal vendetta against Slowey because of this.

I've always thought Souhan was a great writer, but my personal opinion of him went down several notches after the way he treated Slowey.

I'd watch that movie... You?

Josh Willingham: Attends contests around the country where the last person who has their hand on the car wins that car.

Nick Punto: Starts a landscaping company. Guy can't stand coming home with clean clothes.

Jason Tyner: Started his post-season career as a DJ and became a world-wide phenomenon. You may know him by his stage name, Daft Punk.

I'm not a big org guy when it comes to contracts and the like, but if you are a backend starter that has to start the season in the pen and you mope about it, I'm not that sympathetic. His future performance, both in the org and after he left, did nothing to prove it was the wrong decision.

The org probably didn't need to leak, but he provided enough quotes of his own to render it moot.

Or the opposite.

Pretty much when you read comments about salary structure, payroll limits, negotiations on an individual salary, the comments take the owners' sides. That's at least what I read, and what writers at FGs and KLAW say they get also. For some reason, fans take the owners' side a lot more than the players' side. I don't understand that, but it is.

I have no idea what your post is about, actually.

edit: and the reaction to Slowey was to universally accept the Twins' side of the story. Same with Perkins. Same nearly every time an org leaks something to the press, that the org is right seems to be the consensus.

The Twins side of the story is Slowey got beat out and was moping about being in the pen. It was true! Slowey's own quotes confirmed it.

Posted

I might have moped too if I worried about what it might do to my arm.

Trevor May might have a thing or two to say about it as well.

And I think it's even more ridiculous to expect these guys to be chipper and happy about something like this.  If you suddenly got reassigned to something you didn't want to do at your work and that you feared my hurt your ability to continue working in the future...I doubt you'd be skipping to work every day either.

There were some reports that Slowey was an absolute **** that were more or less confirmed by fan accounts.  And Blackburn was the better pitcher.

It's a tough business.

Well, that's a crappy explanation.  That might be true, but we seem to be holding against him an emotional reaction none of us would hold ourselves to.

I don't know about Slowey's quotes; all I can find anymore are Souhan's which if he had posted them here would have gotten him a week's vacation from posting. Souhan was so far over the line with his comments and I wouldn't be surprised if this was a moment he would like back. It was very distasteful.

its so hard to filter the lens thru which you consume your information. We tend to take sides which is the role of organized labor, management, and media.

The truth is always in the middle as organized labor exists to be the counterbalance to poor management. If MLB management did not abuse their labor in the earlier days, management would not have the disadvantage in labor negotiations (relative to other sports) that they have today.

I'm uncertain the extent of the abuse today. As I earlier stated, it's difficult to be impartial. I do give Slowey credit for turning his ability to lawyer his position into a pretty decent gig.

all fair, and sure, I have a lens, we all do.

Yeah, the thing I get worked up about is the rush to judgment, the intolerance, the unfairness, and the total lack of charity we some times see. And it happens to "both sides." Dozier was recently labeled a petulant, selfish whiner here over a couple of innocuous comments. Gardy was frequently unfairly ripped over things he said, with no mercy. So it cuts all ways. Instead of standing up for one side or another, lets stand up for restraining harsh judgment and realize we often don't know what's actually going on.

There might have been a less wrong answer though...

A different pitcher?  Dor the 2011 season the Twins coud have signed Correa, as he was available.  They could gave signed Jorge DeLaRosa and  then would have still ended up with Blackburn or Slowey. Blackburn injured his wrist and never was the same pitcher. Slowey had a few good games in Miami, then the other teams figured him out. A less wrong answer is only about Blackburn's money.  Slowey made 8 million for a career, Blackburn 15. They both struck the lottery given their talents.
