Physics Guy Verified Member Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I read an article linked to Ken Rosenthal's Twitter feed: http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/los-angeles-dodgers-second-baseman-brian-dozier-javier-baez-mark-trumbo-notes-011917 Here is a quote: "Forsythe, perhaps, is a more realistic target for the Dodgers — he is under control for only two more seasons, and the Rays, as they showed in their recent trade of left-hander Drew Smyly to the Mariners, are forever open to acquiring younger talent. The difference with Forsythe is that the Rays cannot easily replace him; with Smyly, they dealt from a position of strength." I started thinking that maybe we could do a smaller three-way trade that would give the Rays a replacement. Here's the meat of my proposal: Twins give up Polanco and receive Stewart from LARays give up Forsythe and receive Polanco from MNLA gives up Stewart and receives Forsythe I suspect there would have to be some other smaller pieces (probably from the Twins), but this would seemingly address the issues each team has. I still prefer we trade Dozier, but if we can't I don't think Polanco fits as a SS.
drjim Provisional Member Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I wouldn't trade Polanco for Strewart. But I'm also pretty meh on Stewart.
Willihammer Provisional Member Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 The Rays wouldn't make that trade.
drjim Provisional Member Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 The Rays wouldn't make that trade. And the Dodgers would do it in approximately 0.5 seconds and say thank you sir can I have another.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I saw that article too, and I'm not sure why they say Forsythe isn't easily replaced. Their depth chart currently shows Brad Miller starting at 1B. They have former prospect Nick Franklin in a utility role, after he played almost exclusively at 2B in AAA last year and then finally looked like a MLB hitter when called up. Not to mention other interesting utility options like Daniel Robertson and Tim Beckham. Plus Willy Adames as an infield reinforcement at AAA. They may not be able to fully match Forsythe's overall production from the past 2 years, but I think someone from that group could come close enough, at least until Adames is ready. I think the issue with the Rays is the same with the Twins -- they probably want a better return to move Forsythe right now.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 And I like Brock Stewart, but I'm not sure why we'd swap Jorge Polanco for him. We should generally be trying to keep controllable young assets. I think earlier "Polanco to the Dodgers" suggestions here met a similar response.
Willihammer Provisional Member Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 And the Dodgers would do it in approximately 0.5 seconds and say thank you sir can I have another. No the Dodgers say, 'throw in a lowly PTBNL and we'll *upgrade* you to JDL.'
amjgt Verified Member Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I saw that article too, and I'm not sure why they say Forsythe isn't easily replaced. Because when you are on the coast, every player is critical, borderline unreplacable, and can only be had for a king's random. Here is the middle... 6 WAR players apparently grow on trees and would be honored to me moved to a "better situation"
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I think the issue with Forsythe is twofold. The Rays probably don't feel they are outside of contention, because of this, and likely because they wouldn't feel that Forsythe is materially inferior to Dozier, they'd likely be asking for a similarly valued return.
AZTwin Verified Member Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 Dodgers can shoot for forsythe but I bet it costs at very least Deleon and Stewart with interesting pieces attached
beckmt Verified Member Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 Answer to all your questions was above. Rays need a better 1B player. They want Bellinger, that is off the table for the Dodgers.
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 Looking around at various fan websites - which obviously aren't 100% accurate way to gauge anything - it still seems that Rays fans and Tiger fans think the Dodgers aren't offering fair value for their second basemen, either. I'm really not sure what happens but I think the Dodgers will go with Utley and the Twins will start the season with Dozier and Polanco up the middle.
Winston Smith Verified Member Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 I saw a mention of the Dodgers interest (real or not) in Castro of the Yankees. How about a totally made up 3 team trade of Dozier to the Yanks, Castro to the Dodgers and the Twins getting Alverez from LA and Sheffield from NY?
Riverbrian Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 All the 2nd Basemen are tucked in and not on the market and if something isn't for sale... there is going to be considerable mark up to make it for sale. The 2B store only has an Utley on the shelf and Utley was placed on the shelf by the Dodgers because they were hoping for a better model. The length of time suggests that the Dodgers don't have another team to go to. I think the Rays think they have a chance and I think Forsythe is a big part of that thinking. Hes gonna be expensive. If Forsythe for Stewart got it done. It would have been done.

I've been thinking for awhile now that it was looking like a 3 or 4 team trade was needed to move Dozier just to increase the options. I still think Dozier to Cards and Wong to the Braves makes sense. The Cards and Braves can each throw pitching prospects our way.

And Reyes is off the table.
Riverbrian Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 Do not think the Braves would see Wong as an upgrade. And Reyes is off the table. Maybe but if I'm the Braves GM I'd be interested in Wong as a bounce back candidate. Petersen doesn't excite me either. But I'm mainly spit-balling. Honestly... The Braves could just go get Dozier and leave the Cards out. How bout Wong to the A's? The Rays would have been a great third team to trade with before they traded Smyly because they had some extra arms lying around.
Willihammer Provisional Member Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 The market is just terrible right now. Second base? Covered. RH power? What? Screw it. Keep Dozier through 2018, offer a QO. Take the pick(s).

How about a totally made up 3 team trade of Dozier to the Yanks, Castro to the Dodgers and the Twins getting Alverez from LA and Sheffield from NY? Well, it won't solve short term needs, but I got to like the upside there in that scenario. Sheffield will be starting in AA next season and Alvarez in A+. I'm guessing though that if they won't give up Alvarez for Dozier, why would they for Castro? Flip side is that you might have my attention if they sent JDL over in place of Alvarez and then a 3rd and 4th prospect got sent our way (one from each team). Both are getting upgrades in that scenario. The Twins might get a better haul.

Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2017 Posted January 23, 2017 If I understand the new CBA, comp picks in 2018 will be in the 3rd round. It will vary by team: http://www.forbes.com/sites/maurybrown/2016/11/30/breaking-down-mlbs-new-2017-21-collective-bargaining-agreement/#201d88fc42a1 A Former Club of a Free Agent subject to draft pick compensation will receive the following: A non-market disqualified Revenue Sharing Payee Club shall receive a selection immediately following the first round of the draft if the player signs a contract with a total guarantee of $50 million or more. Clubs that break the Luxury Tax threshold shall receive a draft selection immediately following the fourth round of the next Rule 4 Draft. All other former clubs shall receive a selection immediately following the Competitive Balance Round B of the next Rule 4 Draft (which follows the second round).I assume the Twins are in that first group ("a non-market disqualified Revenue Sharing Payee Club") since we are getting a competitive balance pick this year. Of course, Dozier would have to get a $50+ mil FA deal to trigger that too.
