Glen Perkins announced via Twitter that he will be having shoulder surgery tomorrow afternoon. He took to Twitter to write to the fans about his frustration and plans going forward. Well worth the read.

If he really didn't want to get paid while not playing, he could retire. (I fully believe he is entitled to keep getting paid though and have no problem with that, I just find it a curious statement.)

Perhaps he could even skip the surgery if he retired? Like Radke?

Maybe he knows how highly paid players in Minnesota are talked about, and is trying to slow it down :-)

Not arguing, just an honest question... Who pays for the medical costs of an active player? I know the team pays rehab costs but I'm not sure about surgery and hospital stays.

workman's comp?

It's one's own perigative to doubt his conviction I suppose as it is a free country, but he said all the right things in that tweet.

Good luck Glen, that sounded sincere enough to me, and frankly, you owed us no explanation.

I am pretty certain the team foots the bill. A lot of young players (minor leaguers) probably wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise.

I would sure hope the team would.

Yes, it is essentially a worker's comp situation. The parent club pays for minor leaguers. Of course, this is assuming injury was incurred while playing baseball, not mowing the lawn or something.

Both sides incur a risk when a contract is signed.

Glen Perkins owes the team nothing.

That said, I find his comments very curious. If it really makes him sick, he should donate it all to charity.

I appreciate declaring that he intends to bust his butt to get back, but I don't really understand the comments about the money.

I think it's pretty crass to point out that he could give away the money or retire--that much is obvious--especially considering the sentiment Perkins is trying to convey, heartfelt remorse over his injury and not being able to contribute.

It was kind of a clumsy statement to that effect. Repeatedly invoking money, saying that getting paid for not contributing was out of his control. Seems like he was trying to deflect anticipated criticism as well as deliver his heartfelt message.

Also interesting, Perkins is in his age 33 season -- Radke retired after his age 33 season with the same basic injury, no? Although Radke had banked more coin by that point, and his contract was up so he didn't walk away from any guaranteed cash. I don't blame Perkins for trying to come back instead, especially since his odds of a successful return could be a bit better as a reliever. I wish him and his family the best.

Still, to suggest that he explore retirement (as if he hadn't thought of it)...

I wasn't suggesting it to him. I generally don't post here in an attempt to communicate with the players. I am just discussing the situation with fellow fans.

He's addressing this b/c like it or not people will address it.  He earned the money, and now he's being paid big bucks to rehab that injury. I hope he's true to his word and no one is working harder than he is to get back.  Truthfully, that's all we can hope for in his case.

You're suggesting that we retire? I'm game. :)

I don't think he should've brought up the money part at all.  He took a lower salary from the Twins to stay a Twin.  He owes no apology.  Hit Sh*t ton of money could've been a lot more from some other team that would be paying him more to not pitch, so even if he never pitches again, I have no problem with him taking the money.  Just don't talk about it.

He is wrong, however. He also has control over how much beer he drinks and how much he eats. Though that seems to be a low concern on his priority list over the last few years.

I would hope that the organization plans on life without Perkins next season. If he does come back, that's a bonus, but the expectations should be 0 innings and someone else taking his place in the bullpen. Hey, maybe one of the awesome RPs the team has drafted will be ready!

Okay, my comeback post. :)

Agreed with this take.  MLB contracts are guaranteed, everyone knows the general injury risk (which is already reflected to some degree in the contract value), and while there have been rare exceptions, it's standard practice for players to continue collecting the guaranteed cash even after injury.  I would do it too.  Perkins deserves absolutely no criticism on that front, especially if he can realistically return next spring.  Calls for him to retire or donate the cash are not really valid.

However, it's a little uncomfortable to keep collecting your salary under that pretense, while also saying that taking taking the cash in these circumstances makes you "sick", was your greatest fear when signing the contract, is out of your control, and is all you can offer the team and fans right now.  Those things aren't necessarily true, and it's not standard practice for players to make that juxtaposition, although as we know, Perkins doesn't limit his comments to standard pro athlete ones, for better or for worse!

I think I get the general sentiment behind his words, though.  He wants to continue competing at the highest level of his profession for his hometown team.  Nothing wrong with that at all.

I assume the Twins have insurance that covers these types of injuries to players with larger salaries.  Glen has nothing to apologize about in regards to him making sh*t tons of money.

The only reason he did that is because many fans look at players and the money they make and expect them to be something they can't be based on the money they make.  Take Mauer for example, in some fans minds he should bat .350, hit 35 HRs, play every game and never make an error in the field.  However those same fans would be the first people calling the Twins cheap if they didn't re-sign him in the first place.  Unfortunately for the players (and the reasonable fans) those whining fans seem to have the loudest voices and are the ones who are heard most frequently.

Problem is, those types of fans are going to complain no matter what.  Actually Perkins saying that he is now overpaid and it is out of his control probably gave those fans more ammunition.
