Hughes Starts Tonight, Gibson Remains on DL

Per the Twins, Kyle Gibson's back has delayed his return from the Disabled List. Instead, Phil Hughes will make the start tonight.

Well,   i guess it beats one or two bad starts and the 60 Day for the rest of the year.

More so than almost any other position in all 4 of the major sports,  though,  there needs to be both caution and moderation when allowing the phrase "bad luck" to creep into a conversation about injury to a starting pitcher.

Luck plays a part,  to be sure,  but mechanics and the pitcher's innate physical limitations play a huge role in how healthy they are over the course of their career.

On the bright side, they didn't activate Gibson first and send somebody down, only to find out about this too late.

Let's be honest, Gibson isn't exactly a stud nor did he start off anywhere near well this season with only one good start out of four.  One more Hughes start in his place isn't a big deal.

How many guys get to make a spot start five days after their previous start? :)

I'm completely comfortable assuming every start for Phil from here on out is a spot start.

This. At this point Gibson is back to suspect status not prospect. I am not confident that he will have a successful mlb career.

For a long time, I've been saying his ceiling was a #3 type, but likely a #4 or #5.  Have never been convinced other-wise.

I like how almost everyone was convinced last year that Kyle Gibson was maybe better than they thought, had started racking up some K's.  Now after 4 starts and an injury (that may have had something to do with those poor starts) almost everyone has written him off with the likes of Ricky Nolasco.

Well, I can only speak for myself, but one good season doesn't change my view on a player.  Example, Hughes 2014 season (added example, Suzuki's 2014 season).

Hughes had the worst stuff of any Twins starter this year tonight.

Literally nothing.  No velocity, no change in velocity, no sharp break on that thing he calls a "cutter", no location, no deception.

Nothing.

Was there a bad swing taken by a single Ray hitter tonight?

As someone said, good that they didn't activtae him and send someone out. Whew! Lucky Day in Twins land with a win with lots of hits and great pitching from a bullpen. Hey...no one in the bullpen didn't pitch a full inning in one stretch!

I know that it is easy to hate on Hughes and he has been extraordinarily awful but he lost 2mph on his fastball. He doesn't stand a chance as a soft tossing (<90 mph) pitcher and he is toast until he figures out where that velocity went. Perhaps though a move to the pen will bring it back.

Just no more starts.
