Promote and Cut

Lets play a game called Promote and Cut. Here is how it works, Select a player needing promotion. Make room for him by cutting someone above him and then promote the string to fill out ALL the rosters. Then let everyone else discuss your moves.

Here is and outline

Promote LaMonte Wade

Cut Darren Mastroianni

Promote ? to Twins

Promote ? to Rochester

Promote ? to Chatanooga

Promote Wade to Fort Meyers

Promote ? to Cedar Rapids

Now you have to promote an outfielder at every level to fill Mastro's spot and someone has to come from EST to fill the hole left in Cedar Rapids by the promotions.

See, the game is easy!! (once someone does the hard work and all you have to do is criticize someone elses string of moves)

Lets Play!!

I promote catcher Andrew John Murray from CR to FM, because at 23 he's old for his league and I want to get him to the majors (if he proves capable) before he turns 30. I cut catcher Brian Navarreto from FM because I don't think he's ever going to become a hitter. Then I sign free agent catcher Brian Navarreto and assign him to CR rather than promote someone I don't know from extended spring training, because I changed my mind and am not quite ready to give up on a toolsy 21 year old catcher after all, and want him to try, try again at an easier league level.

(Our AA catchers aren't beating down the door for AAA with the bat as yet, and John Ryan Murphy needs to be given as much playing time as necessary to re-establish himself as a viable candidate. Thus, no major ripple effect up the organizational chain, stemming from a Murray promotion.)

/ edit - I just checked Navarreto and he's batting .351 since May 16. I quit this game. Even if his BABIP in this period is .414.

Promote LaMonte Wade

Cut Mastroianni

I was gonna say Buxton to MLB but he's up so I have to go with Kepler to the Show

Daniel Palka to AAA

Max Murphy to AA

Wade to Fort Meyers,

Uh....Who's at EST?

I will have to research that part more...where is the EST roster?

I would like to add that not only is criticizing a post by someone else not mandatory but possibly against Twins Daily posting guidelines. Perhaps critiquing is the better choice.

Whos at EST?

Where is EST?

Is EST one hour earlier than EDT? Or one hour later? :)

I will trade Phil Hughes and Ricky Nolasco for Vmart! We need a better DH. Having dealt those two, no one will care what I do in EST. :)

Yeah, I was going to do this last night, but then got up to 9 guys in Cedar Rapids and got tired!

And if you pulled that off... well, I'd say you need a role with the club negotiating trades.

This seems like an odd game. Where are the dice?

Or a roulette wheel. Each of the 36 slots would have a word like Gets a Little Better, Injured Ankle, Regression, Won't Learn, Hammy, TJ Surgery, Can't Hit Curve, etc. One slot of 36 would say Becomes MLB Starter, and once every thousand spins you have one slot for MLB Hall of Fame.

Goulik, I like your thread idea. It is unclear to me why these posts are occurring. It's thread hijacking and yet also indicative of a general animosity toward the minor leagues and prospects. Things around here with regard to minor league players are clearly degenerating.

Bear with me as I go about this in a slightly different way:

Cedar Rapids to Fort Myers (the draft and EST can fill in for CDR):

Luis Arraez, 2B (watch this guy! 51-35 career BB-K)

LaMonte Wade, OF
A.J. Murray, C
Rafael Valera, C/IF/LF
Zander Wiel, 1B
Randy LeBlanc, RHS
Sam Clay, LHS
Miles Nordgren, RHS
Michael Theofanopouos, LHR
Michael Cederorth, RHR
C.K. Irby, RHR

Fort Myers to Chattanooga:

Engelb Vielma, SS (they sent him back down to Fort Myers?)

Nick Gordon, SS (yes)

Edgar Corcino, OF

Tanner Witt, 2B

Alex Swim, C (yes he is struggling *this year* at Fort Myers, but he never should have started there in the first place--promote him and see how does in AA)

Stephen Gonsalves, RHS

Felix Jorge, RHS

Tyler Jay, LHS

Brandon Peterson, RHR

Todd Van Steensel, RHR (again I have no idea why he was back in Fort Myers. Promote to AA and see what happens)

(someone gets cut here)

Chattanooga to Rochester:

Daniel Palka, 1B/OF

D.J. Hicks, 1B

Mitch Garver, C

D.J. Baxendale, RHS

Nick Burdi, RHR (when he gets back, just stick him in AAA)

Leonardo Reginatto, SS (organizational utility IF)

(cut Shannon Wilkerson, Jairo Rodriguez, Mike Strong, and Brett Lee)

Rochester to Minnesota:

Max Kepler, OF/1B

Jorge Polanco (IF)

James Beresford (IF)

J.T. Chargois

Trade Plouffe, Nunez, and Tonkin

Brett Lee? I was really rooting for that guy 2 years ago...

Looks like you need to cut one more at MLB level and 2 at Rochester still but I like the promotions.

Brett Lee was released a month ago and plays for Brewers and Swim retired I thought I read.

Alex Swim retired, so he'd be mighty surprised to hear he got promoted.

Brett Lee was ready cut (and caught on with the Brewers since).

I hope my initial post in reply to the thread didn't get things off on the wrong foot. My purpose was to give it a try, and immediately discovered it's not as easy as it looks, so it took a tongue in cheek turn.

A lot of times people think the process goes like this:

  1. Find some guy with a good OPS.
  2. Promote him.
  3. ???
  4. PROFIT!!!

You can disrupt an organization pretty good, doing it that way. The original post was a good challenge.

Looks like Shane and I also need to pay more attention to the minors this year. Ouch, I feel embarrassed that I didn't catch those

This times a million.

We lose perspective that for every move up, someone goes to the DL or gets cut.  You have to give those guys chances, so simply promoting after a really small sample does absolutely nothing but cause you to drain talent, and if said kid wasn't ready, you have other problems too.  It's not easy, and you have to respect the fact that you're sending a real human being home.  That's one of many reasons why I respect the patience of the front office.  If the collectiveTD opinion ran the minors, our prospect development would be severely stunted.

This is actually a major part of why I started this topic. I also thought an interesting discussion could be had around the chain effect of promotions. Like Shane, there are so many at CR that I think are deserving of a promotion but there is talent in front of them. Are those people in front of them ready for promotion also? Is there someone ahead of them that deserves a cut?

The Lamonte Wade discussion at the moment is the most interesting to me. Some of those in between Wade and Buxton/Kepler/Mastro probably are not ready for either a promotion this early in the season but also have not earned a cut. The injuries in the 25 man roster may be pushing the issue and releiving the necessity of a cut temporarily.

Ok, I got one... It only took a month but....

Cut Buck Britton

Leonardo Reginatto from AA to AAA

Nick Gordon from High A to AA

Luis Arraez from Low A to High A

Manuel Guzman returns to CR from his rehab assignment (Even though his original CR placement seemed a little aggressive and he is only hitting 200 in the GCL while rehabbing)
