That’s Twins outfield prospect LaMonte Wade hitting a home run at Pawtucket, Rhode Island’s McCoy Stadium this past Monday. Wade has been excellent since earning a promotion to the International League, recording walk and strikeout rates of 18.1% and 13.8%, respectively, in 94 plate appearances while also producing .184 isolated-power figure in a league whose hitters have posted a collective .137 mark. Defensively, he has a tweener profile, something worse than average in center but better than average in an outfield corner. Overall, Nick Markakis is probably a decent comp.

I'd love it if they were right, but kind of an absurd comp?  Markakis had a 7.4 WAR season in the Majors at age 24

this is from fringe five.....where they talk about guys NOT in top 100 lists, having a good week....and how much Carson loves them.....basically he thinks that guys with consistent good track records, but w/o fancy tools, are under valued....

I think the Twins could easily swap out Granite from the 40 man and replace him with Wade at this time.

Granite has been a disaster in AAA this year.

without any doubt. No one is claiming Granite, and if they do, does it really matter to the Twins?

They have Wade and Cave in AAA/Majors as backups already.

I'm not sure I understand their plans at this point.....

I don't think that's the kind of comp they meant. More like, the general shape of his offensive production (doubles + walks + limiting K's), and his defensive profile (corner OF) -- type of player, rather than age/career path.

I hope they are also.

Does anyone wonder about Wade’s very high IFFB% of over 30% this year. Does it mean anything? I really don’t know but it is much greater than the major league high last year. Markakis is 6.5% and 8.6% for his career. This seems very different.

Players do have greater rates in the minors that are sometimes double their major league number but I wonder what that number says about his contact. Maybe nothing.

Disappointing to say the least

Have the Twins ever exceeded their draft pool allotment?

IFA included... I don't think they've ever done it.

Not sure about IFA but I would doubt that the Pohlads would ever spend more than their pool. I'm a bit surprised they didn't spend all of it but ... Pohlads be Pohlads.

In my opinion if you aren’t viewing your pool as The MLB Assigned Pool + 5%, then you’re doing it wrong. ESPECIALLY is a year where our draft pool is significantly lower than previous years due to a) 2017 success, and b.) The Lance Lynn signing.

We could have spent an extra $300k with the only penalty being a 75% overage fine (225k). 23 other teams went that route. We didn’t (and haven’t). That’s not using resources to the fullest extent.

Maybe they offered every dime of it to the kid that ended up choosing to go to Missouri (?), but history tells us that probably wasn’t the case.

Don't forget c.) The Phil Hughes trade.

That was an $812k slot, plus another $40k in overages.

Had we kept that pick, we could have offered ~$1.15 mil or so to another guy.

12:17 Hi Travis. I'm curious what you think of the status of the Twins. They have almost nothing committed in way of payroll next season. They should be selling at the deadline, but how far should they take it? Can they really come back strong next season? Thanks.

12:18 The Twins still have a great thing going for them: they play in the AL Central and get almost 60 games against the Royals/Tigers/White Sox. Also, I still believe in Sano. I'm more worried about Buxton. Rosario/Barrios look legit. While I might try to spin off some pieces this year, I'd expect them to be aggressive buyers in the winter. They were connected to Darvish last offseason.

Baddoo is scorching, on an 11-game hit streak during which he has amassed 20 hits, nine for extra-bases. He crushes fastballs and can identify balls and strikes, but Baddoo’s strikeout rate has doubled this year as he’s seen more decent breaking balls, with which he has struggled. Considering how raw Baddoo was coming out of high school, however, his performance, especially as far as the plate discipline is concerned, has been encouraging. He’s a potential everyday player with power and speed.

loads of video.....I find some of the OF plays on his hits to be, well, a reminder that minor league players aren't major league players.

Great link to read about Baddoo. I'm concerned about his inability to hit breaking balls though. Especially in this organization that hasn't figured out player development yet.

I sorta agree but hitting breaking balls is basically why minor leaguers don't become major leaguers so his struggling isn't that worrying. But whether he can adapt/adjust with this coaching staff I guess can be a question. With Buxton and Sano's struggles, Kepler's plateauing and general offensive malaise, our development people might be losing some of the benefit of the doubt.

I suppose every player is where he is due to some flaw, or else he'd have rocketed to the majors in his first year. And I'd rather that flaw be going after the good breaking ball in the dirt, rather than swinging cleanly through fastballs. :)

I believe it's an inability to catch up to fastballs that dooms most players, not breaking balls.

You can learn to hit off speed stuff.

When you have to cheat cause they're consistently throwing fastballs by you, you're done.
