So, where are we now?

I know it is early and I also know that not many spots are up for grabs. Just looking at the raw numbers, so far the starting pitchers have performed pretty well with the exception of Duffey's kerfuffle today against the Blue Jays. There haven't been a lot of clean innings from the bullpen and most notably the competitors for a second lefty in the 'pen have been playing a pretty fair game of giveaway. A lot of guys haven't hit much--notably Santana, Arcia, and Buxton, all of whom probably need to show more to win spots.

 

Are there any trends that I'm missing? Is there someone making a big move to claim a roster spot?

Quentin leads NRI's in PAs. I think the Twins want him to win a spot.

I have to admit I am intrigued. He reminds me of Willingham in a lot of ways.

 

Tommy Milone leads pitchers in strikeouts with 3. They are averaging 5.2 K/9 thru 5 games as a staff.

Uh, I think it is clear they want Quentin to work out. I am truly shocked they want an old guy, who hasn't played in years, to be on the roster. They've never tried that before.....

He does.  And that is not a compliment...  They both are stiff on the field and better suited for DHs, a position that is Park's to lose.  Arcia as a LH power hitter and Vargas as a SH power hitter are better options at this point.  But Quentin might sell an extra couple hundred tickets at Rochester...

They look to be a mediocre team which is to be expected considering the dozen holes on this roster, most notably at least four of the bullpen arms.

Quentin was an interesting "fit" for this team, since we are devoid of that style of player? Which makes me wonder why he signed here of all places. I for one, would look for a team with that spot as a glaring weakness, not one filled with a new FA, young players out of options, and a gifted hitter being misplaced in the OF. Something is amiss!

It's hard to put too much weight into anything so far.

 

If I had to pick one thing... I really think that the Park signing is going to work out. His swing is smooth and quick, and his quotes are humble. Those two things will take him a long way during this transition.

Conventional wisdom is that pitchers are ahead of hitters at this point in spring. So no worries, I'm sure those numbers will come down from such lofty levels as we approach Opening Day.
