High heat Verified Member Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 What would you think of the twins calling the Mets to see what it would cost to take Juan Lagares. They have 5 outfielders and he I more then capable of taking over CF and would be a great 4th outfielder and defensive replacement late in games. What do you think he would cost and is he worth it?
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 I don't want any mediocre players to get in the way of Byron Buxton's playing time.
Lonestar Verified Member Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 Buxton is not ready. Sano should not be in the OF. Rosario is not a CF, especially when flanked by Sano and Arcia. Kepler is not ready. Arcia is OK (at least to give a shot). Walker is a AAAA or AA DH. I would rather have Ligares as 4th OF than Santana (who sucks and is somewhat redundant with Nunez on board).
Riverbrian Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 I believe in Buxton and also believe that it would be very risky to give Buxton the job on opening day. Just like it was risky to give Hicks the job on opening day before that. I'd like some Buxton insurance. If not Lagares... someone like him.
whosafraidofluigirussolo Verified Member Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 I don't think signing Cespedes makes Lagares redundant, and I doubt the Mets do either. Cespedes is a weak defensive CF. Lagares is going to enter late in a lot of games as a defensive sub, and he'll probably start a fair bit against lefties too.

If he starts out terribly (which I doubt will happen) just slide Rosario over and give Arcia a corner every day, or call up Kepler. Either of those options is better than giving up a prospect for Lagares.

If he starts out terribly (which I doubt will happen) just slide Rosario over and give Arcia a corner every day, or call up Kepler. Either of those options is better than giving up a prospect for Lagares. My concern is the overall OF Defense in that scenario. Having Rosario man a corner spot with a CF who can play... Will help the OF go get a few extra baseballs. If you move Rosario to CF... Now you got Sano and Arcia? and those two playing the corners with Rosario in CF and you are probably sub par at each OF position. All you gotta do is put a CF who can play out there and the OF becomes pretty good... In my opinion of course. Buxton is the type of potential superstar that you don't want struggling at the plate just to keep his defense at the MLB Level. He's too good to rush... too good to let get frustrated... too good to let him doubt himself and too good to burn service time while he tries to figure it out. Buxton might be a superstar out of the 2016 gate but I'd feel better with some insurance.
nytwinsfan Provisional Member Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Buxton's defense is 100% ready, and to the extent his hitting isn't, he just needs to work through it. He's shown he can hit perfectly well at AA and AAA. The only thing left is hitting in the majors. Lagares' OPS over the last three years hasn't exceeded .703 and has averaged .662 the last 3 years. Chances are Buxton is going to exceed that over the entire season, but even if he doesn't, he'll come close. It isn't worth trading a good prospect for Lagares (which is what it would take since he isn't a free agent until 2020.). What you are getting with Lagares is a great defensive, poor hitting CF. We already have one of those. His name is Byron Buxton, and he has massively higher hitting upside. This makes ZERO sense. I think you could have accomplished the same thing without the WTF. But let me try to answer. Buxton is not ready.
Old Twins Cap Verified Member Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Bad idea. Bad for the Mets -- did you watch the World Series last year? -- bad for the Twins -- we got Buxton. Next.

IF, ..Buxton is not ready on opening day, he will be during the season. Rosario, Santana, Mastro and/or Sweeney can certainly keep the spot warm until he's ready.

He really hit well during his last month last year, and I also think that getting his much anticipated debut out of the way and having an entire offseason to prepare knowing that he will probably be the starting center fielder this year will help a great deal.
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 How do you know Buxton is not ready? He really hit well during his last month last year, .208/.255/.396 for September. That's borderline Buterrible. Would love to know what you think "bad" is

Would love to know what you think "bad" is Compared to .259/.289/.358 for all of last year for Lagares. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And that is actually Sept. and October Thrylos, but whatever, it doesn't matter. The point is still wrong even if you include the two Oct. games.

nytwinsfan Provisional Member Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 That's Sept/Oct from b-r... Since when is that "good"?Haha, its not good, but neither is Lagares. That's the point. That's what this post is about. It is ridiculous to suggest trading what would undoubtedly be a great prospect (you suggested Kepler) for someone with basically the same floor as Buxton, and a much much worse ceiling and fewer years of control. It is so absurd I honestly suspect you may just be trolling us.

Don't be confused by his Iso P in a small sample size. He struck out in 25.5% of those plate appearances and walked in only 5.9%. What is going to magically change in this off-season?

What is going to magically change in this off-season?Buxton was 21 yo dealing with injuries in the major leagues for the first time. What ISN'T going to change this offseason? But again, you ignore my primary point which is that Lagares is barely any better than Buxton, but without any of the upside. Yet we are considering trading a top-notch prospect for him? That's nuts.

USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 So what do you suggest? One option would be to trade for a centerfielder.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 4: Over/Under the number of collisions at the OF if Buxton is surrounded by Sano and Arcia?I'm not thrilled by Sano in the OF...but I think you are forgetting that Rosario also would be in the OF in that scenario....
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 One option would be to trade for a centerfielder. or not trading one we already had to begin with.... For a backup catcher.
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 One option would be to trade for a centerfielder.Even though the top prospect in baseball is about ready to play CF? That doesn't make any sense to me.
High heat Verified Member Posted January 25, 2016 Author Posted January 25, 2016 I wasn't suggesting Lagares would replace Buxton long term or even be the CFer long term. He would be much more of a insurance policy can manage CF if buxton isn't ready and would provide insurance if Rosario falls on his face. He would be a guy you buy low on and hope you could turn him next offseason.

I'm not sure why I keep looking past him. Probably because he was out of baseball last year but that isn't totally fair to him.
Riverbrian Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 or not trading one we already had to begin with.... For a backup catcher. Yeah I'm still not understanding the Hicks deal. This would have been the first year that I would be OK with Hicks breaking camp with the club. Now we (at least I do cuz the Twins may not) need to entertain the idea of renting a CF.
Riverbrian Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 So what do you suggest? Is a month in AAA going to help him dramatically improve? A month in AAA may or may not help him improve. But it may help us identify if he has.
