Centeno is the most likely of the three to reach MLB earliest and help the Twins the most.

He is a SOLID defensive catcher, who was the 28th best prospect (BA) for the Mets in 2014.

This is his BA scouting report from the BA Prospect Handbook 2014.

 

"When the Mets needed a third catcher for their expanded September roster, they turned to Centeno, the system's best defender at the position who gunned down 56 percent of basestealers in 2013. He became the answer to a trivia question when on Sept. 25 he became the first (and so far only) big league catcher to throw out Reds speedster Billy Hamilton. On the Hamilton caught stealing, Centeno turned in a pop time between 1.7 to 1.8 seconds, which is well-above-average. Pitchers like throwing to him because he's an agile receiver with good hands and a strong, accurate arm. Because he has a contact-oriented lefty bat, he could be a backup in the big leagues for a long time, though he generates practically no power from his lean, 5-foot-9 frame. Centeno has thrown out 42 percent of basestealers in the minors and could one day be a nice backup complement to Travis d'Arnaud"

On Tuesday, the Rochester Red Wings announced that 2015 All Star James Beresford had re-signed with the Twins organization.

I was kind of pulling for him to get a better major league shot with some other organization. Pegged as second base-only, these past few years, it seems unlikely the Twins will give him a shot as a utility guy, and he's blocked by at least Dozier and probably Polanco at second.

Beresford is probably on the 'we'll DFA somone if there's an injury" shot here.  Two starters are pretty good, but beyond that, I don't see much.  Santana will get a shot, I suppose Polanco will too, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if Beresford was on the 40 man by November.

Between Beresford and Britton, I think the Twins now have their minor league rosters pretty well filled... They could add in the minor league rule 5 tomorrow, or depth is good.

Always rooted for Beresford. Frankly, kind of upset he hasn't even had a cup of coffee yet. He can field, run a bit, and slaps the ball around without striking out too much. (Even if there is little pop in those slaps) I'm glad to have him back. Despite Nunez, Santana and Polanco, more depth is nice, and I wouldn't be surprised if this is the season Beresford finally makes an appearance.

 

Really tickled about Benson. I always thought he was a sure thing, and one the biggest disappointments on my failed prospect list of the past 10-20 years. Is it possible that now, healthy, "back home", and perhaps more mature or relaxed or worldly that he could be ready to make it as a "better late than never" role player?

I'm "meh" about Beresford. He is pretty slick fielding, runs well, but he is a single position player with very little power. I seem to have a special hatred for hitters who can't score a runner from second on a single because the outfield plays shallow and I expect that would be the case with the Aussie middle infielder. I actually saw him hit an exhibition game homer in Spring Training, but he doesn't hit with power.

Beresford already has 2.5 years of AAA ball, and he's on his second minor league free agent contract.  Even Doug Bernier back in the day got his first cup of coffee after just over a season of AAA play, and he had a lot more impressive "utility man" bona fides -- Beresford is going on 3 seasons of almost exclusive 2B play.

 

If it was going to happen with Beresford, you figure it would have happened already.

I'm not either to be clear, other than the fact that Nunez isn't a good defender.  I suspect though that this is why Beresford came back.  He thinks he has a shot on the 40 man, especially given how Polanco and Santana were this year.

Since he came up to AAA two and a half years ago, Beresford has played 2570 innings at 2B, and 20 innings elsewhere.  He's not viewed as a utility guy, and thus I doubt he gets a cup of coffee on the MLB bench this year.  Teams generally don't call up emergency backup 2B, they want a guy that can handle multiple spots (Bernier has managed to play multiple positions in each of his 3 brief appearances with the Twins).  Or they call up a projected starter already on the 40-man, of course.

 

I suspect Beresford is back because he's guaranteed a AAA job here, and/or he's more comfortable with the Twins placing him elsewhere than hitting the open market himself.

I am a huge Beresford fan.  Love the way this guy competes and plays the game.  That being said there are flaws in his game and his window is getting short.  I think Levi Michael might be ahead of him and Polanco already is so I am not sure where he can go with this team.  He needs some power to distinguish himself and he just doesn't seem to have it but he sure seems to have everything else.

 

I really like him and hope he makes it to the bigs with some Team.  I just don't think that team will be the Twins unless some serious trades are made.

Per Doogie Wolfson, the Twins signed lefty Buddy Boshers. He pitched 25 games for the Angels in 2013. He spent last year pitching for Somerset in the independent Atlantic League where he posted a 1.50 ERA and 71 strikeouts (14 walks) in 54 innings. 

 

Nothing exciting but good depth.

Looks like quite a roster turnover for the Wings this year.  Lots of guys either out or on their way out?  Oliveros, Pryor, Tonkin (out of options), Achter, Bernier, Farris, Ortiz....

Okay, so someone explain this to me.

 

 Nick Anderson and Buddy Boshers had similar type dominant numbers in Indy ball in 2015. Yet, Anderson ends up closing in low-A Cedar Rapids and Boshers gets an invite to spring training this year. Is it simply that Boshers has already had experience in AAA ball and a cup of coffee with the Angels? Is the Atlantic League (Boshers) significantly better than the Frontier league (Anderson)?  Because Boshers is a lefty and Anderson a righty? 

 

Just trying to make sense of it.
