Wetmore: Perkins to get cortisone shot

Shocker.

Looking at his strikeout rates, immediately after the ASB, he just wasn't striking anyone out. Then, at the beginning of August, he seemed to have bounced back (and was getting Ks, too). And then the last couple of starts he hasn' struck out anyone again.

Perhaps this is something that caused him some issue in late July. He thought he had beat, but now it's flaring up again, so they're trying to get the inflammation under control faster with the cortisone shot.

Next we'll hear about Ervin Santana battling something.

Once again it looks like the Twins medical team tries to diagnose a problem way after the first sign of trouble. Why was this not looked at a week or two ago?

At this rate, this 87 loss season will be more depressing than any of the 90 loss seasons preciding it.

Will he go to the DL?

Why DL him now when you can just call up a 14th pitcher for the next few days?

Molitor is saying right now that Perkins is flying back tonight and will have the neck examined and an MRI. He referred to this being an ongoing issue, and that shots have provided some relief in the past.

Sigh

It's not clear from the discussion if Molitor meant it was an issue last year, or if it has been this year. But it sure seems like it was an issue for most of July, and that was BEFORE the trade deadline. How the hell can Terry Ryan and crew know that they could be losing or at least not being able to rely on the single most valuable guy in their troubled bullpen and not get more help. That is embarrassing.

Or, at the very least, how is it not all hands on deck in the bullpen?

I'm sure after the cortisone shot, they give it a couple of days to heal. I wouldn't want to DL him if it's possible he'll be back in 4-6 days. These games are big and if he responds well, I'd want him out there.

He hasn't had a cortisone shot or anything this year. This is the first of this issue this year. He's missed time, I believe, each of the last two seasons, maybe even further back.

I think you're jumping to some unfair conclusions here based on K-Rate.

He looked terrible for multiple appearances in July, it's not jumping to any unfair conclusions. Not to mention that the Twins desperately needed additional bullpen help at the time even if Perkins was 100%, which he clearly wasn't, whether injury, fatigue or mental, and they failed to do, well, much of anything.

I know you are in tight and all with the Twins org from the bottom to the top, so I get why you don't want to criticize them and that's fine. But to say Bonnes is jumping to unfair conclusions is a bit overkill IMO.

Trevor May now becomes the closer. He's the only guy with remotely shut-down stuff. The only alternative would be to call up somebody from AAA or AA. Who's got better stuff than May? Nick Burdi maybe, but Burdi is just as likely to blow up as get guys out.

This explains why they kept May in the pen, and why it looks like he's been working on hitting the corners with his heater.

Yeah, that's it...

I'm just saying there's no way to know that he was hurt when he started struggling. It's possible he was just struggling when he was struggling. Can't just assume he was hurt right from the beginning of his struggles.

The guy was lights out the first half of the season, maybe the best RP in baseball, then suddenly over 8 appearances he looked awful (8.00+ ERA). Yeah, it's "possible" but it's pretty unlikely. Like 5% chance at best that was the case.

May should be the closer... but the Twins rarely use him in high leverage situations. I can't tell if Molly trusts him. Knowing this staff, they'll probably slot Jepsen as the closer and keep May in the 8th inning role.

If they are not going to DL Perkins right away, shouldn't they option someone (maybe O'Rourke) and send someone over from Rochester for tomorrow afternoon?

Buxton!?!?!

Pretty interesting question.

My guess is they won't.

Yeah, you can send out O'Rourke and bring in...Thompson. Wait, let's give Logan Darnell a shot.

Shane Robinson still has a 0.00 ERA.

I feel like I remember Perkins coming up with injuries after bad performances in the past, and Gardy blasting him for either not coming forward before he blew the game or not just toughing it out instead of blaming some lame injury.. I could never tell which...

This is so shocking.........but, hey, it is never a FO mistake somehow according to some.....never.

Again, that's not fair... We don't know if they had conversations with him, and it's not their job to tell him he's hurt. That's on Perkins, if it's been lingering for long. Doesn't have to be blame for every situation.

Tonkin's been awful. Jespen and May get the 8th/9th in some order. Outside of that, prayer.

I'd bring up Tonkin as the 8th inning guy, then use May as closer. Best solution for the moment.

It probably does not matter. There might not be too many situations where a late inning guy is important. I'd give May the first shot though. If just to reward him for being yanked around so much and team seniority.

Right. Weren't there issues with this last season? And given his performance post ASB, how can we not have been more proactive?

Was May the acting closer last night, so he couldn't be used in the 7th inning?

Not that I endorse it, just trying to figure out why May wasn't used. No mention of May in the Strib game story:

Casey Fien, Kevin Jepsen and closer Glen Perkins had pitched in each of the previous three games and were unavailable. Perkins, it was learned after the game, headed back to the Twin Cities to have his neck examined.

So Twins manager Paul Molitor turned to rookies Ryan O’Rourke and Graham.

Specifically, in last nights game, I start the 7th with Graham. Not a good option, but the best available.

Letting O'Rourke start, presumably because the 3rd and 4th hitters were left handed hitters, was idiotic. He's a LOOGY. You can't turn the bottom of the Yankee order into legit hitters by letting them face a soft tossing lefty.

And once you've made the poor decision to bring O'Rourke back out, you can't compound it by sitting on your hands and let him pitch to 4 hitters when even on TV you can see he's so nervous his hands are shaking.

Ultimately. Molitor was put in a tough situation last night. But he managed to make it worse.
