Twins Extend Kurt Suzuki

True, but a long term deal for a catcher is usually in the 2-3 year range.  I could see a 2 year deal happening, possibly with a 3rd year option.  Maybe a vesting option, and the Twins will make sure that he's back to being a backup catcher to make sure it doesn't vest.

All speculation on my part.

Wow.  I guess I called that.

I was wondering if news of this was going to break after the deadline. We heard almost zero Suzuki rumors going into the last few hours of the deadline, which seemed absurd given the fact that he was obviously available.

My guess is they locked up a deal a few hours ago and spent that time nailing down the details and getting paperwork signed.

This isn't going to go well. They had better trade Pinto, then, because what the hell are they going to actually do with him now? This is terrible.

I don't love the extension - but they didn't go crazy and overpay (and at least they locked him down, instead of letting him walk at season's end).

I'm glad it's two years, I figured Suzuki wouldn't agree to less than three.  I could care less about the money.  Still, now we'll almost surely never know what kind of offers the Twins had on the table for him and anyone who was hopeful the Twins would move him will get the old, "no one was offering anything for him," schtick.

Maybe, maybe not.

Good move, if Pinto steps up then you have a pretty damn good back up C who doesn't cost much.

I've kinda been resigned to this likelihood... obviously hope he can keep his 2014 hitting going, since he wasn't worth much of anything at a similar salary in 2012-2013.

At least we haven't traded Pinto for a relief pitcher... yet...

The Twins can afford the 2/12. He replaces Willingham on the books.

The Twins have endured two poor seasons from Willingham. They can't do that with Suzuki. It is a good deal as long as the Twins are willing to cut ties if he returns to his 2012/2013 form.

With his near league bottom OPS, he needs to hit .280 to have any offensive value. When he stops approaching that level, they need to move on. The memory of one good season shouldn't stop them. It shouldn't have stopped them from dumping Willingham on the Orioles.

But it will. And it did.

Not a big fan of the move.  I guess MLB GMs are smart enough to see a career year and candidacy for regression.  The money is fair, to be sure, for a guy that earned an All-Star berth this year.
