Sometimes the Twins can be so frustrating. You have 26 players on the team. If you don't trust the arms in the bullpen in pretty much any setting, why are they there. Wsa there a reason you dragged out Thielber, Jax and Lopez AGAIN after they pitched the night before, and NOT WELL putting eight Royal runners on base. You brought up Winder to be a long-man. What better time to test him than to put him out there in a close game where 2-3 innings against a so-called weaker team would be a goodtime to reinroduce him to major league play. If Pagan is just around for can't win or mop up situations, and even Moran slipping into that status, then the front office has made some mistakes in putting together a bullpen. The Royals didn't give up. They played hungry. You pinch-run Correa, who is not a disater on the basepaths, with more of a running machine like Castro, and he doesn't test the outfielder's arm. If Buxton comes to the plate with runners on first and third, and a Polanco dancing off the first base bag, it puts whole new pressure on the pitcher. Sometimes, you feel, splitting a series is okay. Maybe it is. Let's get everyone out there to play (and I hate the B-squad day lineups). Bu the guys in your bullpen are major league pitchers. They are expected to be ready to come in and do a job. Have no explanation for Duran who just needed to keep throwing 100mph strikes. Hell, evan Chapman managed to do that. Did the "immigration" blip throw him off the game? Three walks, a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch and a strikeout. Worse than giving up a leadoff homerun (which he has done a couple of times) or letting a team bang together three singles. On a plus note: Ober did well!

I'm also watching Michael Helman, who could very well morph into the Twins utility guy for a couple of years, showing both power and speed. Maybe not quite cut for regular play, but he has been evrsatile in the field. -
The Twins Bullpen is Missing a Starter
Rosterman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You gotta start, at some point, look at what is best for the team. Ober or Madea in the rotation. Pagan and Moran in the pen, or someone else. Moran still ahs promise at least. You play to win, not to puff the stats of some players (Madea) to make them a trade candidate - unless you are so far behind in the standings (or too far in front).- 32 replies

Tough Decisions Are On Deck for the Twins
Rosterman replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
All about options and Larnach has them. If he starts to tank anymore, he will justify keeping Gordon and Kepler, for the time being. Kirilloff would push Gallo back to the outfield. Farmer pushes Castro out. I was hoping Castro would give the Twins some base running. Not that he has had opportunities, but that was his best method for staying with the Twins. Polanco could be an interesting option going forth. Does he hit well enough to keep around for at least another season? Where does that put folks like Lee and Lewis and Julien in the scheme of things, not to mention Martin. Of course, everyone has to excel a bit better with the bats. Thank goodness the Twins rotation ahs kept the teams in games. -
Reinforcements Are Coming, Who Loses Out?
Rosterman replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Kirilloff, Winder, Polanco join Gallo in St. Paul. That's four guys who could replace what four on the major league roster? (Garlick, Julien, Moran perhaps, and...Castro)- 65 replies

Your Minnesota Twins' Options Primer
Rosterman replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Also intresting that the Twins have to use an "open roster spot" carefully. They just won't be able to send pitchers back-and-forth at random - guys like Moran or Sands or even Varland have to be carefully used in the majors, and in the minors, correctly. Yes, the Twins MAY have a number of arms to call up, use, and let them walk if anyone wants to reclaim them.- 20 replies

Balazovic is interesting. He has to make the team next year, but can't be sent out next season without going thru waivers (and even then becoming a minor league free agent).- 20 replies

Shows the need for a long relief arm. If a starter only goes 5, you don't patch the game thru to the end with 1-inning jobs. You need someone to come in and pick up 2-3 innings.

The Twins Found a Diamond in the Rough
Rosterman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He, sadly, could still be the odd guy out if the Twins ever return to ful strength, be it adding Kirilloff back primarily as a first baseman, or the return of Royce Lewis in 2023.- 18 replies

A Deeper Dive after 13 Games
Rosterman commented on stringer bell's blog entry in stringer bell's Blog
Best catching in baseball? Still hasn't been challenged in a running game. Because the pitchers aren't putting guys on base. Yes, the hitting could be better. Solano is basically an older version of Arraez at first, but saving the Twins in that respect. We see there is no depth until Kirilloff challenges a returning Gallo. Kepler, Polanco return will make the team better, one hopes? If anything, the Twins have allowed folks like Castro and Gordon and Taylor to get at bats and show they can play in a pinch, although we don't really want them as regulars. Farmer will be interesting to see when he comes back. The name of the game is pitching and what the Twins do with pending free agents Gray, Mahle and Madea when the time comes. Will Varland, Ober and others come thru with limited appearances? Do the Twins break the bank and offer any of Gray or Mahle a bigger contract to hang around? Good exciting baseball. Dynamite starts from the rotation. Overall decent usage of the bullpen, as we see the, um, hesitancy of Rocco to use Pagan or Sands unless really needed, and the hopeful gaining a solid footing in the pen of Alcala and Moran. Duran will give up homers if his throws meet a bat. He has to stay comfortable with winning that challenge. A young super closer in action.- 8 comments

Roster Crunch? Who stays, who goes?
Rosterman replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I want Julien to get as much play as possible while Polanco is doing spring training. He will learn so much and know what he has to work on at AAA, the Twins will have a good look at the guy, and can make mid-season decisions on Polanco. Kepler and Gallo will replace Wallner and Garlick. Bigger question if and when Kirilloff comes back. And Farmer, too. -
Both will be eitgehr free agents or Rule 5 eligible if not protected next seasoin., Of course, Taylor will also be a free agent. Both teams trading players they didn't see not only in short term, but also long-term plans. Up to the players to make a case for themselves, now.

Jorge Alcala's Puzzling Start
Rosterman replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He looked good enough in spring training to come north. Otherwise, might have left him behind to pitch in sunny Florida in basically rehab, to get back up to speed, so to speak. Give him a litle more time. He has the stuff. You have to face real batters in real situations after a year on the injured list.- 12 replies

The rotation isn't even hitting the 100-pitch mark to any degree yet. Throwing strikes is the key. And having a first-rate defense in the field will be a big plus. The pitch clock can be a big help. Ryan was wonderful when he can control his rhythm on the mound. Keep him with Vasquez all season, please. And that may be the hidden gem, a first-rate receiver behind the plate that can also help the still developing Jeffers. Be interesting to see Varland pitch in Yankee Stadium. WIll he push Madea to the pen, perhaps? Ober is in the wings. I like that Rocco is trying to see who can give him two innings in relief. This first month is the key. Yankees get out-of-the-way. You were able to play Houston. Get a bit of the inter-division White Sox, and finally faceopff against Cleveland.

Twins 26/40-man Roster Moves/Transactions Thread - 2023
Rosterman replied to Danchat's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
He is on the 60-day list, but the minor league side. If they put him on the major league one, he would get service time. He was injured before spring training when he was still in the minors. -
ins had a $50m bench yesterday. It is fruistrating when they pretty much throwaway a game by going heavy with the real bench guys. And only 10 days into the season. Plus, you want to beat the teams in your own division to win your division. If you can beat your divisional opponents, you have a good chance of taking the division, as the chances of them faring better against other teams are a pretty 50/50 mix. When will Buxton actually get to practice in the outfield? How much did he do in spring training. Seems Gallo was getting used to first base and was put in the outfield and twisted the wrong way. Correa is being paid an enormous amount of money to play and has no concerns about financial secuirty or getting a better deal next season. Yes, I'm all for giving a guy a day off now and then. Which is why you have a solid bench. But, c'mon...and at home, too. People pay to see Buxton. They pay to seee Correa. Theya ren't paying to see Farmer and Gordon and Castro and Taylor.

Well, Moran is being put in a position to throw strikes. Ryan still has to deal with getting his routine busted up when he gets runners on base. He works well with his own rhythm. I am hoping the pitch clock is one thing that will work well with his style of throwing. You are going to give up home runs. You are going to put batters on base.

Top Five Twins Bullpen Shuttle Candidates
Rosterman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would keep puishing Headrick as a possible starter. Nice to have a lefty starter, and if nothing else, he transitions into a long relief role if he can get out enough batters on both sides. If I were the Twins, I would be pushing Dobnak as a total long relief guy, seeing if he has the ability to pitch, say, multi innings every other day, or even some back-to-back work. That is his way to the majors right now. The Twins have the ability to experiment with Dobnak at St. Paul, and run the gamut with folks like DeLeon, Rodriguez and others if they need to rotate guys in-and-out. With basically only one 40-man roster spot in play (unless they can 60-day someone else), you call up, play and lose he guy if he isn't already on the 40-man. I'm glad out starters are showing getting thru the 5th inning and pushing faster towards the 100 pitch limit emposed on such arms these days. We still need to think srong about the perfect 10th inning bullpen arm who can keep that runner from scoring.- 11 replies

Strong Twins Bench Pressed Into Early Duty
Rosterman replied to Greggory Masterson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If not playing Gordon in the outfield, then I would've kept Wallner as the 4th outfield option over Castro, who is NOT playing infield. I like Castro in spring training, as he seemed to be the one guy that the Twins have who could steal a base. Keep waiting for a 10th inning and him starting on second. But when Polanco returns, he is gone. And, please....Rocco. You don't have to start all four bench players in a game. You can't expect the starters to only give up one run a start...forever, without some help from the bats.- 24 replies

Both have three more seasons before needing a hard decision. And we can hopefully count on Correa to be the shortstop in the majors for those three, and probably four, seasons. Either could step in when the time comes. Bigger question is what is the depth chart for 2B and 3B. And where do guys like Lee, Lewis and Martin fit into the grand scheme of things, which means those three "studs" could be in positions for up to six seasons. A guy named Acuna could also be in the shortstop mix come 5-6 seasons from now. A good problem to have. But, yes, one will advance to Wichita if the Twins see fit to move Lee more quickly towards third base, for example.

They Are Who We Thought They Were!
Rosterman replied to Alex Boxwell's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
First six games - 24 runs, 47 hits. Walked 18 times. Striking out only 46 times. But the name of the game is pitching - 11 runs (7 from the bullpen in 15 innings), 58Ks, only 16 walks (a quarter from Gray) and 34 hits in 52 innings. Whew.- 31 replies
