    It's playing better than the other teams in your division, especially against the teams in your division. That is where Cleveland excelled in the endgame, as well as the Twins taking a fast fall-from-grace in the last momnth with crippling injuries. Will be invals. teresting to see how mroe interleague games play out, as well as less games against division rivals.

    At some point you might have to cut and move on. The Twins took a gamble with Buxton, see how that will play out longterm. But how many times can you see hope in, say, Kirilloff or Lewis, and not just move forwards with...someone else. Always shades of Jim Eisenreich (remember him) who couldn't play, then ended up making a modest comeback, but with a different team. You start to realize how precious those 40-man roster spots can be, especially if you have numerous players that aren't...healthy.

    Thanks goodness AUSTIN MARTIN is NOT on the 40-man. Addressing this sooner rather than later is job #1 right now, see if you can get him abck into the swing before season's end, the fall league, or maybe winter ball. I didn't see him getting a call this season.

    If players start going on the short-term IL list in any quantity more than 1, the Twins will have to rely on starting arms to pitch in relief to fill out the major league roster. That is not necessarily a bad thing, if the mindset is there. If a guy pitches long relief, he will still build on innings going forth, and could transition back into a rotational role in the future. It is figuring out what a pitcher may bring to the team in that role. Henriquez showed sparks of being a bullpen arm as St. Paul winded down their season, and in his brief Target Field showcase. Winder and Sands would be high on the list, if you want to keep Woods Richardson and Varland strictly as rotation arms. But, in a pinch, the major league exposure would do them good in any capacity. Interesting that the Twins basically list 15 pitchers as mainly rotation arms on their 40-man roster, and only eight as bullpen arms.

    I'm seeing some major roster decisions if too many guys are on the short-term IL-list. There is NOT a lot of give in the roster, hampered still if the Twins, say, would need to add a catcher short-term. Is Polanco ready to start the season? If not, Julien stays. Can Miranda only DH? Then Solano or Farmer plays third, unless Kirilloff is also unable to play the field...wait, we have Gallo. Whcih means Taylor gets to play everyday and Larnach - wait - he's hobbling too (Garlick gets the call, followed by LaMarre!) But now we have, literally, no backups...especially if Gordon is hibbling. Celestino can go on the 60-day to open a roster spot...question is - for whom. Yes, the rotation might remain dicey. Will Madea be able to go at least 5 innings once the season starts. Is Winder ready for a long relief role (or Sands). Does Alcala need time facing live pitching in extended spring training and a short term IL visit. Santana and Megill are on-the-cusp roster guys, so you might be able to rotate someone in their place. Canterino could also go on the 60-day, but would get major league service time. The joy side is that it is spring training - round-the-clock rehab and possible play in the field (no rain outs yet), hitting cages, working with coaches, getting in shape. Pick-up games just to hit and field can kinda happen to stretch the skills set. The World Baseball Classic kinda throws a wrench into some things...and when do the Twins start playing more than just a few of the "roster" folks in exhibition games.

    Pitching should NOT be a problem (as well as outfield) for the Saints this year. Even names like Jose de Leon and Dereck Rodriguez. Does Fundeburk start at AA (as well as Balazovic). There's a couple more "starting" candidates on the minors free agent signing sheet. What is lacking is 40-man roster names to fill out a Twins bullpen that could be in need at some point. Is there more than 1-2 rotating places left on the 40-man (barring mroe i njuries) that will also allow a third catcher if need calls. The best route to the majors for many of these guys - Sands, Winder, Varland, Dobnak - might end up being able to egt guys out at the major league level in the long relief role, and then also being available for that spot start when needed, allowing the Twins to just bring up "a relief arm" when able to add that double-header player. What is nice to see at AAA and AA is many names developed by the Twins that are pushing their way towards consideration by the Twins, if not this year...next year.

    You still gotta find 40-man roster spots for any additions beyond the 40-man. Megill might be working his way towards the waiver wire. Santana needs to stick with the club or go back on waivers. So that is two potential spots. Alcala could stay behind in Florida and spend time in St. Paul, but will remain on the 40-man. The Twins also have Oliver Ortega and Dereck Rodriguez ready to stash at AAA. Not any bullpen depth on the 40-man, unless you start converting relief pitchers. I'm sad to rad of possible Henriquez arm issues. He was the dark horse guy to break camp as a long-relief possibility. Instead, an IL visit will just create more roster issues, I'm afraid.

    You need your rotation arms to be ready to pitch strong once spring training ends...no more building up innings for the season. And the bullpen ready to produce. The flip side is that there aren't many off days in April. Go figure that!

    Interesting. Make a roster spot for Julien. And also, with Kepler gone, Larnach is back in the mix. Julien is still unproven but, y'know, I always pictured Polanco moving into the infield backup role as he ages...not necessarily with the Twins, but if he isn't ready out of spring training, he may find his role dimnishing if other step up to the plate. Julien can also be in the future first base mix, depending on the outcomes of Lewis, Martin and Lee. But those three MIGHT not make more than an appearance with the Twins in 2023, depending on injuries.

    Larnach, like Celestino, was pushed too soon. Maybe a year at AAA will do him good. But, he has to worry about falling in the prospect chart, and the Twins may bump him for finding space in the outfield for the likes of Lewis or Martin. A solid season in the minors can also raise the potential for tradebait for any number of high-end $$$ draftees. Some teams like to swoop in and get a guy that anotehr team spent big bucks on in signing. Of course, there is always Wander Javier, too - a $4 million write off by the Twins who managed to go thru two Rule 5 drafts before becoming a minor league free agent after the briefest of time at AAA St. Paul - now with the Padres. Back to Larnach - the Twins with no DH meant there was hope that Larnach could've started for the team. Now he will be in combat with Wallner in St. Paul, as well as a host of minor league free agent outfielders who, hopefully, won't make a Twins call just because of lack of 40-man spots.

    I was hoping Griffin Jax was going to be that go-to guy for long relief. The Twins don't have the roster spots to do regular switch outs of fringe pitchers this season, so if they truly want long relief in the bullpen, they get to use up options on folks like Sands, Winder, Henriquez and anyone else on the 40-man, but listed as a starter. Of course, the secret is to get AT LEAST six innings out of four of the five rotation arms. Happily THIELBAR and MORAN can both go into a second inning.

    Well, signing Correa means the Twins have a lot of shortstop prospects that will need to find new places to play, with one or two also keeping that glove in-case-of-an-emergency.

    You have to have a pitcher comfortable with starting an inning with guys on base, and hopefully match-up with the players on deck. I am often surprised that don't start with walking a batter. Be interesting to see if the running game is a high priority this season. The flip-side is that both teams get this same situation. So you better have a solid bench. I'm going to miss Sandy "The Bunt" Leon. Somehow, the Twins seemed to have trouble moving that guy over to third, compared to the team they were facing. 5-10 in extra inning games was a kilelr for the Twins last season. Griffon Jax seemed to be the one that suffered most. And it doesn't show up in the pitcher's record, ass the runner scoring doesn't count against their ERA. But until baseball can handle tie games, we will have this......

    Goes to show that the bullpen is far from set, although didn't the front office say something about NOT doing much to improve that part of the field operations? Megill and Pagan have to be on the spring training bubble. I personally feel Alcala should stay back in training camp and continue to pitch nin Florida, then a couple of minor league levels, before coming back. The question is, the Twins don't have a lot of play on the 40-man. Canterino could go on the 60-day-IL, but do you want him to have major league service time. Royce Lewis will now get two months more of major league service time. The Twins have filled their 40-man with AAA starters, it seems: Ober, Sands, Winder, Varland, Woods Richardson, Balazovic, Henriquez - but at some point these guys will have to be called upon to picth for the Twins bullpen, just because there isn't a 40-man spot to shuffle minor league free agents back-and-forth-and-back-and-forth.

    Whoever Farmer, Gordon, Taylor, Solano replace in the field, that guy should DH. And we should never have more than two of the above in the lineup to start a game, preferably only one...with late inning on-field replacements possible. That said, if Taylor is indeed a runner, could he become the Twins need for a leadoff hitter. Be interesting to see the condition of Kirilloff, Polanco, Buxton breaking camp. Buxton may not like playing DH, but then - what?!? DO you play him at a corner outfield? Sit out on the bench? Would be nice to get at least 100 games out of Byron. Who do we see working themselves into the Twins? Not many alternatives on the 40-man. If we lose a catcher, someone will have to be added. Otherwise it is Lewis and Julien for the infield, and Larnach and Wallner and Celestino for the outfield. Barring putting guys like Centarino (or Balazovic) on the longterm IL-list (as well as Lewis, where he would get even more major league service time) - there isn't alot of room at the inn, so to speak. Sands, Megil, Pagan?

    Losing that 2020 season was a pain. The Twins, no doubt, will wait until the last minute to add him to the 40-man. Or, they might just keep him at AA all year, especially if he puts up stats maybe slightly better than he did the past year, postponing a hard decision until the next season. They have a solid $2+m investment in the guy, so they don't want to see him walk in a Rule 5 claim. But that said, he could be leapfrogged by many others. Also, the Twins have no real first abseman in their system, unless they switch someone like, say, Julien to the position. Of course, a super season from someone like Kiriloff, or if Miranda shows that he is a longtermer for the Twins, will make Sabato expendable. In that case, a solid season at AA could make him a solid tradechip to a rebuilding team.

    I'm curious to see how Rocco fills out the lineup. The Twins need a ledaoff hitter. Could Taylor fill that role. And, then, where do Farmer, Gordon and Solano fit into the mix. Sitting on the bench, getting regular player pushing their fielding option to DH. Can the Twins field a regular set line-up for the season? I always felt batters took some solace in knowing who was batting ahead and behind them. Is that just past thinking?

    The Twins have no depth at first base, unless Kirilloff shines and will be controlled for 3 more seasons, or if Miranda would move there and be controlled for 5. Both players could also DH with the option to play in the field. Could 1B be the home for Julien? Right now, the Twins will be fielding a couple of minor league free agents at St. Paul. Al depends on where they ultimately see Martin, Lewis and Lee playing and those decisions should be made sooner, rather than later.

    Kirilloff has to shine to stay at 1B. He can also play the infield. But an average season might make him expendable if.... Miranda shines. Jose could be the first baseman of the future because... We have to find a position for Lewis, Martin, Lee.... And Julien could also be in the mix, and maybe Julien could also be shuffled to first base. That's not even considering names like Severino, Shuffield, Holland, Miller and more than could be as litle as two years out.

    The New York Post’s Jon Heyman reports that Solano’s deal guarantees him $2MM, with up to $250K in additional incentives available. The question is: Better than Garlick? If Larnach is NOT going to play everday, better to have Trevor at AAA playing everyday?

    I'm not sure Alcala will be ready to go north with the Twins. Might need some extra time to face live bats. You can put Megill and Pagan into competition with someone like Henriquez for a spot (not to mention Winder). Hand is a lefty. It frees up Thielbar and Moran to pitch multi-innings if needed, something both did in 2022. I think it all boils down to cost. The Twins still have Ortega in St. Paul after his 40-man removal. They have signed a substantial number of minor league free agents, including a couple of lefties. Mostly for depth, but right now St. Paul has 17 pitchers on theiir roster with 7 from the 40-man needing space.

    That outfield is getting pretty crowded at AAA St. Paul. SO much so that Kyle Garlick, who actually has a major league contract, didn't get a non-roster invitatiuon to camp. A 35-year-old veteran bat, who can play first and other positions, possibly be a clutch hitter off-the-bench. Taylor is outfielder #4. Gordon can play out there. So can Kirilloff. Of course, if Larnach or Wallner shine in spring training, it will open up many changes in the Twins going forth.

    Heck, you can even say that folks like Brooks Lee and Austin Martin may not make the fulltime grade and still be considered TOP PROSPECTS come 2025, partly because there is little reason to add them to the 40-man if players you currently have are playing well. The Twins need a couple of catchers to advance to cusp of major league level by 2025. Will it be Ricardo Oliver, or perhaps Alex Isola? Jair Camargo will still be young come that time, but will be able to go his own way if not protected next off-season.
