But the Sox got something that could help them at the moment for someone that they shouldn't have waived, considering all the moves they recently made. You never know on the waiver wire. People need roster spots for a variety of reasons, although the Luke Hughes thing still confuses me...considering the Twins will be switching out a pitcher for another bench player anyways soon.

You always lose players because there is no place for them at the moment and a better opportunity happens elsewhere. You must make a choice between one or another player and how they fit the current team (plus salary and service time et al). Think LeCroy or Ortiz. Restovich sent packing. Remember when Sorrento had to leave because there wasn't room, but then Hrbek went down. After toiling in an organization, a player must make their own choices...some go to Pittsburgh (Garrett Jones) or Kansas City (Humber at the time) because they may get a full-season chance to succeed or fail. Predicting just when a player may burst out is the toughest part of a GMs job. I mean, Grant Balfour allowed to walk. Pat Neshek cut thinking no one would claim him. Luke Hughes being waived.......

If Ellsbury had injured himself earlier, the Red Sox would've claimed Clete Thomas and done did a trade with Detroit. Bowden is nice trading chips, and shades of the Twins sending Revere to the Red Sox for him, the Sox got what they need...an adequate replacement for awhile (Ellsbury will be back...not out for the year). Love that Repko also damanged his shoulder in a matter of games. Now we wait to see who claims or trades for Hughes...

The couple of times that a pitcher MAY need to bat - let's have Luke Hughes or someo ne available to PH then.......naw! The backup is Duomit. Yes, we may want him to field a bit better...but you can't have everything, and with Butera/Rivera/Towles you have nothing.

And the Twins will have to address Kyle Waldrop at some point, after a minor league rehab, as they would have to waive him out of the organization to keep him in the minors.

Has to just think about pitching each and everyday. Doing a job, his job. I sometimes feel players get caught up in "what ifs", especially in regard to potential payouts and such. Free agency is in the wings. A great big payday. Hell, even if he pitches just okay, someone might have to offer him arbitration and he'll get $8-9 million before thinking about fee agency again. The Twins could: (1) demote him to the bullpen. But they still lose him and get nothing if they don't arbitrate. (2) waive him right now and have someone pick up his salary, and if a higher-in-the-standings team really wants him, maybe a minor prospect in return. They clear payroll at least. (3) Hope his value increases in July and someone is desperate to give an A-prospect for him. Probably not, though, unless the trading team can sign him to a respectible 2-3 year contract. Remember, he can get $8-9 in arbitration even if he goes 1-14 with a 6.00 ERA.....possibly, probably, scarily! But nothing looks like he'll return to the Twins. Nothing. Like David Ortiz did with the Red Sox, he can hold the Twins up for money if they want to keep him an additional year and gamble that he gets his head together for free agency ($8-9 million from Twins if offer arbitration, or a $20 million 3-year contract elsewhere with a high option year, perhaps). The killer is that the Twins are losing ALL their starters -- Pavano, Baker, Marquis, Liriano -- at season's end. There is no stud prospect coming up this year, really. No one that could be a stud the next year. Wimmers won't be ready until 2014. Gibson until 2015. A rotation with Swarzak, Duensing, Diamond, Maloney saves money but strikes no fear...I'm sorry, with Blackburn eing the veteran. And even if they can buy a free agent, who wants to come here.

I suspect that Baker will get multiple short-term offers (a base salary for 2013 with a nice option for 2014) from numerous teams, hoping that he recovers. Hey, the Twins gambled a million almost on Zumaya...just for a nice short look (explain how that happened and why they didn't just 60-day him to control him for the remainder of the year, at least). I doubt the Twins will be in the running...unless Baker really likes being here.

C'mon, Hughes has done everything the Twins ask. He hits for pop, yes -- he strikes out He'll tackle any position. A good valuable bench player. Put him out there everyday and I'll take him over Alexi anyday. Between him and Plouffe, you had Twins ultility/bench guys for 4-5 years....defining bench guys...a person who can play more than adequately any position for a modest amount of time and then happily return to role-playing role. I would've cut loose Burroughs for the 40-man spot.

You still have to get thru waivers and looks like Bowen is being offered out there for outfield help. If Clete Thomas had been waived after Ellsbury went down, Boston would've traded for him and the Twins wouldn't have gotten him, showing the timing in this process. And I vote for Liriano in the pen. If he doesn't like it, he pitches in a totally mop-up role. Right now, I see no one trading for him if they have to go to arbitration to even negotiate with him.

Were the Twins clearing a 40-man spot for Bowen, perhaps. Although doing so with any number of other folks (Gray, Burton for example) would've worked easily as well.

The biggest decision is what the Twins do with Benson, Revere and possibly Hicks. Willingham is still around until 204, but could DH. But Justin is making a play to be around past 2013...but would be a better fit for DH after that. Parmelee is the Twins interim first baseman as others develop. Seeing if the Twins flip Revere for Bowen, perhaps, as Red Sox can still trade the guy rather than lose him on waivers.

I would like to see a catcher with morpossible punch than Butera, especially if he has options. I would also like to see a bigger bat than Tishi...who should play everyday and is first call if you need a 2B/SS due to injury. It will be interesting to see how Morneau ends up, and if Parmalee or Burroughs would be a ncie bat to have off the bench. The Twins do have one open spot on the 40-man. The bullpen is a crapshoot. Doyle will probably stay because he can long-relief and mop-up in the least...let Manship and such start at Rochester (waiting to see the 10-15 pitchers that will be cut and when so they can maybe get other jobs).

It had to be a rude awakening that no one claimed you on waivers...and that maybe you have to work/think a little bit harder about a major league career. That being said, he is a Minnesota boy, a good booster of the Gopher program, and can become a spokesperson for the team a la Michael Cuddyer. Plus, he is left-handed. Just ahs to maintain a great attitude and enjoy throwing strikes!
