  1. BEN REVERE can't bat second. Lead-off, or nothing. You can bury him at 9th...but he can't bat second.
  2. Any other year. But totally doubt that the Twins will risk arbitration with him, or he'll re-sign with the Twins beyond this season. He has no worth as a possible closer yet...unless he attitudes that way himself.......but anyone who trades for him will have to hope to sign him to something reasonable, which is out of the question since they would have to offer him arbitration at an outrageous price for his current abilities. The only way he stays a Twin is if the Twins offer him arbitration for $8 or so million and he jsut is not worth that gamble...again.
  3. This is the year to give Slama all the time possible to succeed. He can't be any worse than Burton, Gray, Maloney...Capps or anyone else you dredge up from the waiver wire. He's old-er, so this is his last chance. He will pick up somewhere...was really surprised when he wasn't claimed in the Rule 5 last season. Unless the Twins...shades of Neshek...really don't like him. If you don't want him, don't keep him around. Same with Revere. If he isn't in your plans (and, like Plouffe, why the f* did you draft him high in the first place, then get rid of him...just because people say he can't do certain things. Man, this biz. So, Twins, let's 60-day Waldrop soon. At some point Burton and Gray will go out the door and two more roster spots will materialize. The Twins have to actually think about Toshi....hell, the Mariners are talking of cutting loose Figgins, the Padres literally said goodbye to Hudson, and Adam Lind is an expensive cut by the Jays. Give Slama some time. He deserves it as much as any of the Thompson trio, Burton, Gray, Maloney, Oliveros, Diamond.....
  4. In hindsite, not expecting Marquis to come north and Hendriks opening the season injured, they might have pulled the plug a couple of days later rather than sooner. The evils od dealing with siomeone from a rival or within the division...it's a no-brainer for the other team NOT to trade him if they still think he is the 41-50th player currently in their organization depth chart and they don't need to roster him.
  5. On the verge of being considered for a call-up, depending on the state of Mr. Brunett. Deolis Guerra is one of the real bright spots at Rochester out of the bullpen. You can argue that Slama is waaaay ahead of anyone, but is he best suited to being dropped totally into a closing role rather than pick-up or setup. Lester Oliveros is throwing heat and getting guys out. Since my last post, Deolis has made 3 appearances pitching 7.2 innings. The first of the three he took a loss giving up a 2 hits and three walks mixed with an error and a homer in his two inning stint (1 run not earned). But his next two outings gave up 2 hits and a walk while striking out 4. The upside is that he is pitching multiple innings and going thru the order once. The downside is that he seems to pitch only every 3-4 days and hasn't done a back-to-back stint yet at Rochester. Let's keep watching!
  6. Baker is 60-dayed, so his spot is open. 39. Room for Slama!
  7. He has to draw walks, learn to crowd the plate, bunt, and be slap happy (shades of Luis Castillo) so when he does swing and hit the occasional fly, it scares the bejesus out of folks. Which also means he has to be the leadoff hitter...he is not a runner advancer. He can have a place in a lineup and on the field, just have to have the right place. Is he taking enough pitches to, say, flip-flop with Span?
  8. Yeah, he was pushed towards the complete game and surprised Ron and Rick weren't just satisfied with 5 solid innings for his first start...instead pushed him a little too far and bang, bang and then Duensing had to get loose fast and more bang. I', still not always pleased with pitcher management (like Diamond the other nite sitting for a long inning, and batting even...you do have the players and should have a solid game plan when the game actually starts of what you dream, can do, and need to do).
  9. Hendriks needs a few more starts to totally polish himself up at Rochester. The Twins had the opportunity to do a looksee with DeVries to see what they have. For all intents and purposes, the Twins could've also recalled Hendriks to start today and hang around until Blackburn returns (something I'm not really looking forward too). It's also a lesson for DeVries. See what adjustments he makes during his next start/s. Then he can go abck down to the minors and really work and see where he might end up with the Twins. You can never have too many pitchers, and the Twins have a lot of journeymen and also rans to fill most teams 4th 0r 5th and long relief spots. And I want to see both Swarzak and Duensing STAY in the ullpen, especially when you are trying out new starters. Last night aside, Duensing shines in that role. Swarzak is a good innings eater, but will be pushed by the likes of a Manship or DeVries next season.
  10. Depending on Swarzak and what the Twins wish to do with Blackburn, they ight have to swap out Mastro for another pitcher. But, yes, Willingham should be in right field, although the sun hitting him out there deadens his profile for all the fans! Or Span, who has major value ONLY as a centerfielder, so you hate to pull THAT plug too soon. Revere can play right, but then you have TWO dead arms playing the wrong spots in the outfield. We complain about Revere's on-base. Yes, he can take a few more pitches and a lot more walks. He needs to learn who to bunt. He can run and I am excited everytime he gets on base and I want the Twins, in the midst of a dismal season, request Revere to steal everytime he makes it to first and almost everytime he makes it to second. Let's make this guy Mr. Pressure. It amps up the game. The question is where do ou bat him in the order and who do you put immediately behind him to best use his stealing abilities. But don't complain about on-base when the other three candidates are batting, what.......192. You can bury a dead bat somewhere (third base) in one position, but not two. And give Revere the chance, please. But then the question is, amisdt all the Span talk, who actually will come up and take the vacant outfield spot and how dismal MIGHT they be while given the chance (Benson).
  11. I get the feling the Span's upside is easily replaceable by the less-expensive Revere, and -- yes -- moving Denard to left or right may give the Twins more ability to cover the field, but stat-wise it is the similar case made against moving Mauer to first or third. He is best in centerfield. The Twins are better served with the upcoming Benson, or Hicks, in center or one of the coners, looking 2-3 years out. Revere is still a tad rough -- at times. But so was Hunter, so was Span. The Twins believed enough in Revere to make him a first rounder, amidst all the discussions hat happened back then (most notably that the Twins were being cheap). If you look at 2011, the two weren't that far apart, and you have to play the Span marketing chip while he is hitting closer to .300 then after he falls to .260 and becomes...just another outfielder. I would not trade Revere.
  12. He's not on the 40-man. I assume the Twins were thinking long-relief totally, especially when Baker was in the mix. And the Hendriks shined, so there was no need to push him more. But he can hopefully be a possible alternative down the line. The assumption is that Liriano and Pavano will probably be gone by mid-season and the Twins will need someone...anyone to throw innings. It is a great opportunity in Twinsville, and the competition are the guys in lockers next to you at Rochester, since I doubt anyone will make the jump from New Brit (Bromberg or Hermsen the only onlies). I JUST WANT THE TWINS TO KEEP DUENSING AND SWARZAK as the two better long-guy out of the bullpen. They have important roles and fulfill them to expectations............
  13. The bigger issue, I think, is that some of the ownership base has Blue Jay ties.
  14. It is NOT the worst rotation if the guys get guys out, and win games. You can survive with 5 B-starters. You may not reach the wild card or playoffs, but right now Blackburn/Liriano/Marquis weren't getting it done. I see Slama on the radar as Gray and Burton implode, but Waldrop and Manship may be ahead in the callup scale. The big pain with musical chairs is that you might be forced to lose someone at some point...but if playing musical chairs, guess it doesn't matter. There was a reason the Twins signed 110 free agent minor league pitchers...I guess.....this year.....
  15. Not totally surprising. It is a question of playing time needs, current ability of players and such. Just like some Twins need to go backwards to Rochester to work out some kinks,,,maybe some are currently overmatched at AAA and need to feel good et al. I think there is some pressure this year to actually try and win, amidst being a feeder for the Twins, at Rochester.
  16. I agree that at some point Oswalt has to pitch somewhere to show what he has. The gamble is how much is that worth to a team like the Twins, already burned on Zumaya and Marquis. If he can be had on whatever is considered the cheap or reasonable, then he pitches well AND is traded to a contender. Both sides could be happy.
  17. Duomit signed a one-year deal with the Twins because he saw the opportunity to showcase himself, not play alot of catcher, get some time in as DH 0a safe position) and maybe some outfield and first base so he can cash in with a multi-year deal that may be significantly more than he deserves or the Twins would be willing to pay. So, at some point, he may prove to be a more valuable trading chip and the approach with resigning (avoiding arbitration). Twins fans have to feel pretty up right now with the potential of Drew Butera throwing from the mound, and catching...possibly in the same inning. Keep remembering, people. Players want to play and sign with teams that have the potential to win. So, the Twins are doomed to their minor league system, trading what chips they have for other chips people may not want, and hopefully the season ticket base remains.....
  18. I thought the same, too...you burn yesterday's starter as a pinch runner and tell them to be careful out there...especially when behind...Butera. The Diamond decision was a tough one the game before. You don't know you are going to have a long inning and you want to get that deep start out of the starter (of late). ut you do have the capabilities of having Swarzak, Duensing or Liriano pitching two innings.
  19. Right now, you have too many outfielders. Pick one and stay with him (Revere) and make one (the Rule 5 guy) a backup. Then you have Plouffe and Butera also on the bench to rptate wout with Carroll/Casilla and Mauer/Doumit. Have Mauer/Duomit/Morneau play the 1B/C/DH rotation. Until the Twins figure out what to do with Marquis, they stay with 13 pitchers. Don' even think about Liriano back into the rotation unless you really are out of the picture by mid-season. Bring up another starter. uive Cole DeVries an opportunity. There is something to say about hunger for a major league job. Looks like Jared Burton is on the edge. If you do end up designating him or Gray or whomever, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give Slama a shot. But don't take Duensing or Swarzak out of the bullpen. And no one encourage an early return aof Blackburn.
  20. One, free agents want to play for a contender or a ring, unless on the downslide of a career and the money blows them away. I would see Span going, now, before revere. Watch for Revere to shine and stay, with Plouffe staying on the bench and getting filtered into third...who else can play there....
  21. I agree. Plouffe is an enigma. We don't really want to lose him...yet...he MAY still have potential...but if he can't be a bench player and really has no set position as a regular, then maybe.........
  22. Capps in the ninth. Yes, you want to shut them down with the potential to win in the bottom of the inning. Armchair manager says, though, with the weakest part of the order coming up, you want someone that could possibly close the door on the top of the 9th AND the 10th, when the heart of the order will be coming with a percentage must better chance to score. You do Duensing, or Swarzak, or someone that can do 6+ outs if need be and the game keeps going and going and going.....
  23. It's nice to constantly move players around and about, and the Twins have had a sorta luxury when they have High-A as well as rookie ball at Ft. Myers...and basically they can move that third catcher or extra batter or pitcher from Ft. Myers to AA or AAA on a temporary basis. But don't move players down. Rochester is looking pretty crappy for the third straight year. And, yes, the Twins have one 40-man spot open currently.
  24. The contract is there, but must be taken out of the equation. He is basically the face of the franchise and needs to be marketed as such, unless you feel we should send him on his ways. I'm sure there is at least one team out there that would absorb his contract for just 115 or so games as a catcher...and they might actually keep batting him third. But basically Mauer should be considered outside-the-box. Put him in his own category and say the team payroll is....then add Mauer in. His hometown value is/can still be/high. But if I was management, I would look for an opportunity. The other consideration...Mauer signed thinking the Twins were going to win. Does he want to play 8 seasons on a so-so team? I doubt it. It makes him look all the worse in the long run. It's too bad he can't give any of the money back, or adopt someone each year. But no one said Twins baseball had to pay him that much except us fans here in town...basically. He is cute in the Head and Shoulders ads!
  25. At some point, better than a Scott Diamond or PJ or whomever is next on the callup list that may/may not have a future with the team. Someone made a comment about bringing Sano up at 19 and giving him licks at third. Is he better or worse than what they have. Right now, the Twins have to be looking long-term and figuring out who they need to take chances with that will grow as the years go on -- from within their system.
