See what you can in a trade, otherwise bring him up Tuesday to piggy back with the other starters. We don't need to stretch the relief group anymore than it is, so I would have him come in in the 4th inning hopefully pitch 3-4 innings.

The Ryan Jeffers Breakout Has Begun
gman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have always been a supporter of Jeffers. Although there are other catchers with better publicity in the league, I think he could get some allstar votes in the next couple of years. I look for him to get a place on the 2025 squad. -
Prato is a 25yo right handed hitter, with about 90 games at the outfield corner spots. Maybe he could be the right handed platoon side in the outfield. Not all players have to be left in the minors until they are considered too old to try at the majors.

Is Josh Hader the Twins Missing Piece?
gman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This team is not even close to being a world series contender. I would trade players, but more as a seller than title contender. I certainly wouldn't trade two top prospects for two months of a rental.- 22 replies

Looks like they waited much too long to start hitting. Pitching staff looks burnt and bedraggled from carrying the load too long.

I think Martin is a good asset to fix both center field for the Twins and another hole in the Twins lineup. It seems unreasonable for him to still be playing so much second base, unless his arm is not in good enough shape to make the outfield throws right now.

Career Game for Yates, Martin First AAA Home Run
gman commented on Brandon Peddycoart's blog entry in Brandon Peddycoart
Seemingly it would be more practical for Martin to get as much time as possible in center field. He can play there and that's a position that's open and available for the foreseeable future. He would look good in the Twins lineup and outfield next spring, if September. -
A New Position for Royce Lewis?
gman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think Polanco is at third base to demonstrate positional flexibility to anybody who may be watching. Maybe Julian is at second base to prove he can field a position(hope not)to anybody who may be watching. He only has 2 errors at second in 49 games. Maybe a number of other miscues, but only 2 outright errors. Lewis could be back in 2-3 weeks, I think he belongs at third base. Polanco is probably better at second base because of throwing reasons, but he may not be here next week. I'm surprised they put Polanco at third instead of first, but I assume they want Kirilloff at first as much as possible. The rest of this year, I think they really need to sculpt this into a team that wins not just this year but into the future and maybe becomes a powerhouse instead of a team that's full of pieces not quite fitting together. Any trades I would prefer to see would accomplish that goal rather than just fit people into places they don't belong.- 67 replies

I think they may need to reconsider their use of starters in the minors the last two months of the season. Since the process is to have starters only pitch 4-5 innings, doesn't seem like it would be that much difference to have those same pitchers throw 2-3 innings at a for the Twins. Get them closer to the 8th or 9th inning for Duran, Jax, Thielbar or possibly Stewart at some point. True another Duran would be most helpful, but I think the chances are less than slim and none. It wouldn't be the first time a top arm was brought of from the minors to pitch in relief. That's how Duran and Jax both got started.

Edouard Julien Can End a Twins 27-Year Drought
gman replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
With 55 games played and 58 games left in the Twins schedule, not counting today, he would have to catch up with the others pretty quick. Still he is having a very good year without pressing to win the rookie of the year award. -
I wonder who Washington would be looking at. Williamson & Prato maybe? There is not much on the St Paul pitching side doing well right now, maybe Winder or Headrick. I think the Twins will hang unto Varland pretty tight. The other side beside Lane, who has mostly played right field this year, Garrett, a righthander, has hit lefties to a 881 ops. On the pitching side Harvey or Finnegan?
-
Funderburk has pitched very well at St Paul with a 1.10 whip and 54 k's in 37 innings. He is also a lefty, yet I don't recall any noise on him getting a chance with the Twins. Anybody heard anything?

5 Reliever Trade Targets on Expiring Contracts
gman replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thielbar threw an inning last night with 1 walk and 1 strikeout, hopefully he is back in the Twins bullpen next week. I wouldn't want another reliever with a high walk rate or high whip, we have plenty. I also wouldn't want a mere replacement for someone on the roster. I want Varland as a starter next year, but I am wondering if he could threw out of the bullpen the rest of the year. He has thrown 96-97 with his fastball and could add his second best offering for a relief role.- 8 replies

This year about him getting a mostly full healthy year under his belt. Possibly he'll run out of steam come September, but I hope not. I think he comes much closer next year to what we were expecting in the power department, but I am not disappointed in what he has shown this year. For all practical purposes, because of his injuries, this is his rookie year. I'm hoping Julian and Lewis( with more healthy games played) keep up the pace the rest of this year and next. That would be a great threesome to have added to the lineup as regulars going forward. I would like to see Wallner or maybe Larnach added to the group the rest of this year.

Rumor: Twins Fielding Calls On Their Left-Handed Outfielders
gman replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Like everyone else, I would trade Gallo for roster space. Simply a signing that didn't really work out, move on. Trade Kepler, use his current hot stretch for the teams advantage, before he cools off. If he woke up and this the real him, why did he wait until the post all star break? I agree with previous posts that Twins will need controllable outfielders for next year and I'd prefer Wallner and Larnach. Jenkins probably won't be ready for 2-3 months😀(we wish). I don't really want Castro or Gordon getting enough time in the outfield next year to be looked at as near starters. We need better. But it's starting to look like we might be grabbing outfielders off the scrap heap next year. -
We have 4 good but not great players sitting on the IL right now who could be back in August. Probably as good as anyone we are LIKELY to trade for. Polanco hits right as well as left, Lewis who is a right handed hitter, Thielbar a lefty reliever and Stewart a righty reliever. No cost but time. Thielbar scheduled for St Paul rehab starting today. Polanco has already been on rehab assignment in ST Paul. Lewis took batting practice on Friday and is hoping to be back early August. Stewart some time in August. Alcala and Paddock possible September. Gordon is running. No set time for any of these 4. I wouldn't give up much to trade for anyone that would be a short term rental.

I suggest we approach this trade deadline as if we have a 15 game lead. There has not been a real fight for first place in the division all year. Cleveland is discussing trades for some of their starting pitchers. Or at least teams that would like to trade for them are. Give Wallner and larnach playing time in the outfield. Put Buxton on the injured list, let Polanco DH and give his legs time off, don't over use Duran. Let Julian play second. He played all over in the minors, but maybe that's part of his problem now he never got steady playing time at the second. One of those problems of wanting position players who can play all over, they can't play anywhere at gold glove level. Trade Gallo and Kepler. They won't be back next year and don't be fooled by a sudden hot streak, they're the same guys who did poorly the whole first half. We need to find a couple of guys to play in the outfield next year, or else we'll be hunting an entire outfield in the off season. It doesn't look like Buxton will be back out there and he never play that many games in any season anyway. They need to play Martin in center field and quit putting him at second base. If he is hitting well enough by the end of August, let him rotate with Taylor. Miranda probably needs surgery or at least long term rest for his shoulder. There is a reason he can't drive the ball. It's hard to hit with one hand. Don't expect him back this year. Don't expect Alcala, Paddock or Canterino for a pitching boost this year. I think the Twins can win 38 of their last 66 games. Roughly a 600 clip. That should allow them to slowly pull away in the division.

For anyone who remembers the Rod Carew trade, you can't think of any other trade when someone says "The Worst Trade in Twins History". Nothing recent evens come close.
