Correa, Julian, Wallner, Lewis, Miranda and to a lesser extent Kepler had almost career years and the fans and the FO wanted to believe the good times would last forever. Julian and Miranda are struggling in AAA, Wallner has less than 20 RBIs. Correas is producing at about 1/2 his value and Lewis is just starting to put this together after a body change screwed up his swing. To be fair the hope seemed reasonable and the disappointment only something the Twins can deliver. There is a possibility that Kepler, Miranda nor Julian will be on a 40 man roster at the end of the year. That is how a team goes from playoff contender to total system failure.

It is tough to get excited about this as prospect rankings are tossed around as if these have a lot of value. Gabriel Gonzalez was ranked 79 overall when he was acquired with Justin Topa, Darren Bowen, and Anthony DeSclafani + cash in the Jorge Polanco trade. 18 months later Gonzalez he is the 8th ranked Twins prospect and a recent article on TD questions if he has a path to MLB. I thought a previous article on replacement level killers does a good job of summarizing the players lack of contributions. I would add Correa to that list. The manager/coaches for failing to get the most out of underperforming players. Then the FO for putting such a team together.

There are multiple ways to evaluate a trade. One of the most important considerations in evaluating a trade is were the goals of a trade met. If goals of trade are not met, the trade is an “F”. Just because the goals for the other team were not met shouldn’t mean the FO gets a passing grade. When the Twins are in the middle of a pennant race and use resources to boost pitching and guys we traded for did not achieve that objective the trade is a failure. With this FO there are more examples of “F”s than “A”s. The list of deadline acquisitions the Twins made in recent years that did not achieve immediate goals accounts for many of the deadline trades that were made. Off the top of my head this includes Jorge Lopez, Tyler Mahle, and yes Sam Dyson. The Fulmer trade was a success. When the Twins were sellers the Ryan trade was a success.

I agree with your assessment. What do you think is lacking. Is this about talent evaluation. Is there an issue with player development. My perception is that Tampa and Cleveland make very few poor trades and almost always seem to sell high on the players that are traded. The one exception might be the Joe Ryan for Nelson Cruz trade.

Rushing to the Dodgers for a Catcher

A discussion of the Wilson Ramos for Matt Capps trade might be worthy of inclusion in the article regarding the value of excess catching talent.- 10 replies

Jose Miranda had a K% of 36 and Julian had improved to 28% K before they were sent down.

The Twins are desperate for offensive production and they hope Lewis can be productive. Halfway through the season the Twins have 4 players with >1.0 fWAR. Detroit has 7 players. As a team, the Twins have 8.6 fWAR, Detroit has 16.3.

Inaction Has Become the Twins' Identity
Eris replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
“They refused to move on from Emilio Pagán” We saw Pagan pitch when the Twins were in Cincinnati. He looked really good—almost unhittable. Right now, long term improvement looks like moving on from Lewis, Correa, Larnach and maybe others. They will not bring much trade value, so the Twins will hold onto them and hope they improve. -
Week in Review: Returning to Rock Bottom
Eris replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
“The Twins made zero MLB transactions over the past seven days, avoiding any new injuries ” Castro was a scratch today because of a sore wrist that he originally injured in Cincinnati. While not expected to be put on the IL, Castro was presumably unavailable to PH for Bride in the 8th inning today with a runner on third. Why else is would we send Bride to bat with RISP trailing by 1 run, and down to the last 4 outs with Castro on the bench.- 39 replies

Question of the week: what’s the biggest need?
Eris replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I think several years of bomba squad success had intoxicated the decision making within the organization with regards to drafting and roster construction. The Twins have a lot of bat first players with below average defense. Therefore we are left in need of upgrading at multiple positions—which essentially means that no single acquisition will significantly alter the course of the season. Also, the Twins are not playing fundamentally sound baseball which suggests that there are coaching/development issues within the organization. It has been years since the Twins way was emulated and a source of pride throughout the organization. -
With Wentz throwing 43 pitches last night, he is unlikely to be available for the rest of this series.

Put Byron Buxton in the Home Run Derby
Eris replied to Peter Labuza's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
“No Twin has even participated in the Derby since Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau.” Miguel Sano was runner up in the 2017 HR Derby. He hit a ball 491 ft early in the derby. Participating in the HR derby might have ruined his career. Before the Derby he was a good hitter. After….well you know the rest of the story as he tried to hit every ball 490 ft. Edited to add that Brian Dozier participated in the HR derby in 2014. -
I viewed it as a really lazy effort. For example they have the ETA of Keaschall as 2027. He would be playing today had he not broke his hand in a HBP. FG is not as high on Khadim Diaw as is TD.

I have always been puzzled how a catcher can go from close to an elite pitch framer to really bad in one year. Maybe it’s the stat or maybe just bad umpiring. As others on TD have pointed out, the Twins draft strategy on catchers is puzzling. There is no position that is more important.

Royce Lewis, Byron Buxton, and Baseball’s Bullying Ways
Eris replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It is natural that players are frustrated and fans are disappointed with career altering injuries. Royce went from possibly perennial all-star / future hall of famer to someone who might be struggling to get their next contract. The emotionally side of sports injuries can be very devastating. Edited to add: And fans can be very insensitive. As an example look back at all the negative comments on TD about Joe Mauer’s contract following his career altering concussion. -
Ignore comment as @tony&rodneycomment above. 2 Runs scored after there should have been 3 outs (K + pass ball with Steer reaching 1st would have been the 3rd out). I think both runs scored on the double. But that doesn’t matter, even if 6 runs had scored only 2 would have been earned.

“but Jeffers couldn't corral the pitch” This is being generous. The pitch was in the middle of the plate. I don’t have an issue with Wallner diving for the ball in the 6th inning as Buxton was backing up the play. I not sure that Wallner should have been the substitution for Castro in RF when Keirsey is on the bench. It is likely that Castro or Keirsey catch that ball. WPA. Not sure how this is calculated. But the largest negatives should have gone to Jeffers (failure to ”corral” a pitch that hit his glove without moving it -0.5 WPA), Wallner for failure to catch the line drive -0.2 WPA, and Rocco -0.30 for not substituting Keirsey in RF in a 1 run game Poor defense cost the Twins 4 runs last night. Defense matters.

I think the real issue is that there is combination of too many injuries: Lewis, Keaschall, Emmanuel Rodriguez, Schoebel (Buxton is currently not on this list but I have not seen an update on his elbow). There are also players who were expected to perform but have become DFA candidates. Julien and Miranda. Although Julien being able to turn things around was always a question mark. Few would have predicted that a healthy Miranda would turn into a pumpkin. Then there is Correa. As others on this thread are pointing out injuries and lack of ability to be healthy/ stay healthy have become the plight of the Twins, year after year.

Calling up Dashawn Keirsey Jr. was not a move made in isolation. Buxton exited Saturday’s game after being hit on the left elbow with a pitch. With Buxton’s availability uncertain, the Twins had only one OF who can play CF and had at least 3 players who could play 3B. Nice write-up on Gasper. If he keeps hitting like this he should be up soon. However, there is only limited space on the roster for players who profile as a DH.

Devers was hitting well so there is a lot of risk for Boston. However, Devers was not being a team player and a trade was probably all but certain after he refused to play 1B. A cancer in the clubhouse usually doesn’t have any positives for a team.
