Week in Review: Keeping a Distance
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Gallo will be with us to the bitter end. I fully expect him to be rostered for the Wild Card series, but probably won’t play. From there we have to wait and see.- 15 replies

Roster Crunch? Who stays, who goes?
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Not nice to leave Kirilloff in AAA after what he’s been through. They don’t need Luplow’s right handed bat. They already have Correa, Lewis, Polanco, Buxton and Taylor are right handed, their catchers are right handed, and has been rightly pointed out Solano is having a nice season. Plenty of capable right handed bats. Bring up Kirilloff and bring up Larnach while you’re at it. -
I actually think Rocco will move Correa back up to the #1 slot when the AL Wild Card round starts. It did work after the All Star break.

Maeda dodged some bullets today. The platoon split, pinch hitting thing going on is way out of control, if you ask me. Sending Castro up to pinch hit already behind in the count 0-1 is … not sure. Nevertheless, a really good series overall. Next up, the Twins have a chance to do to Cleveland what Cleveland did to the Twins last September.

Not sure why they are allowing Julien play when he noticeably favoring one leg? The old “I’m fine coach” should only go so far especially given other injuries we are seeing.

A very entertaining game! I think we need to ask if we should be using Duran as much as we are. Back to back nights and 3 nights out of 4 seems like a very bad idea. I think they are overworking him for no good reason. He now seems to have lost command of his breaking pitches to boot. I don't think we should shut him down completely, but just use him more strategically as if the division lead is more like 15 games than 5 games. No more back to backs. Nevertheless a very nice win tonight. Good rally by Pagan after walking three guys. Nice grab by Solano and clutch hit by Correa.

All these other guys, nothing. Buxton is a big deal around here, yet nothing from Dan Hayes, Darren Wolfson, Do-Hyoung Park, Souhan, LENIII, etc. Don’t let your tee times get interrupted by a Buxton update, fellas. 🙂 anyone I miss? By the way, kudos to Ted Schwerzler, who takes some heat for some of his takes, but is the hardest working guy on the Twins beat right now, hands down. Thank you. @Ted Schwerzler

By the way, hats off to Phil Miller for at least showing interest in the Buxton saga this season, and tweeting out something about this most recent setback:

The Greatest Twins Rookie Class in History
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Larnach says hi. Wallner should be in right field, not left, to maximize his strong arm. Buxton should be in center (I’m open to Martin) or Lewis who should be at a premium position. Varland has promise but is still a work in progress. I’m not ready to crown Julien anything yet. There are parallels to Miranda there and that should be a lesson. Those other rookie classes were better, in my opinion, but no this one is not bad. With Mike Radcliffe sadly no longer with us, lets hope the right people are in place to keep the talent pipeline going.- 21 replies

As far as using plantar fasciitis as an excuse, if Correa had taken a couple months off to treat it back in May, maybe he would be back to full strength by now, or at least managing it fine. There would be no negative impact to the teams place in the standings. I will guess that Correa has got a Wally Pipp thing going on here with Royce Lewis at short, and won’t admit it. Or he is trying to be Superman. Or it’s the mildest case of plantar fasciitis on record. Or a combo platter of all those things. As far as the pop up he let drop, Correa wasn’t available for questions after the game. We know he’s a smart player. Like the rest of you, I assume he saw something that wasn’t there or got his signals crossed. Mistakes happen. According to Gladden during yesterday’s broadcast, Correa decided to go take extra batting practice in the cage after the game during the media period.

Roughing out September transactions
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I love riverbrian’s analysis of the offense. As far as pitching. Here goes mine. In the competition for possible #3 starter in the wild card round, I don’t really have an opinion. Maeda would worry me, but as of today would be my first choice. This could still change. Ryan with his current struggles seems like a better candidate for one inning of relief. For Ober, they are clearly managing his innings, and it also depends on how Ober matches up. I am not interested in Paddack for a bullpen spot unless he makes a couple of late season starts and we see how he fares. Keuchel is a nice story but not worth the risk. Varland is an excellent candidate for relief as long as we ask him not to overthrow. I would not attempt any other surprises from AAA. With good long starts from Lopez and Gray and production from the offense, the Twins could very conceivably advance to the second round.- 43 replies

Thanks, I was hoping someone would bring this up. Hoping a TD writer is capable of doing a deeper dive. In the first inning, Ryan fastball was in the 93-95mph range, but by the third inning it was down to 90-92. When I checked his 9-inning shutout against Boston earlier this summer, Ryan was throwing 91-94 consistently right through the whole game. If Ryan is trying to overthrow at the start of games, that is a bad sign and suggest that stop doing that please.

Obviously the team has staff who scout and advise on personnel in other organizations, but especially after last year, the top two decision-makers seem completely lacking in trust in their staff in identifying potential bargains in other organizations, and lacking in confidence to actually go ahead and authorize a deal. It is a no win situation at this point. I think their best bet for bullpen help this postseason is to identify which starters will start games, and let them pitch deep, and then determine which of their other starters might be good for the set up role. And then being it is a very small sample, hope to get lucky.

What I am not a fan of is using Duran for 2 innings. Duran has said himself he doesn’t like going out for a second inning of relief. I think you give Duran one inning and then take your chances. Those types of guys get all wound up for one big inning of whup-ass, pardon my french, and then they’re spent. They either finish in the handshake line or they come in and sit and cool all the way down. Hard for them to warm back up, and in Duran’s case, he has said as much. Postseason, sure. But not games like today. That’s not how those guys are built. Also, Duran is only a couple years removed from serious shoulder issue. It’s just not worth it to me, to chase a single win on the arm of your by far best reliever when all the other teams were sellers at the deadline. I know that sounds kind of backwards, that’s where we’re at. Just my opinion.

Yup, we need to line up Lopez and Gray for the first two games, hope they pitch well, and that Rocco doesn’t get cold feet and pull them out of the game too soon.
