  1. Strategic trade by Cleveland. They sold high on Civale and are thinking beyond 2023. Even if Cleveland happens to back into the postseason this year, they have no shot of going anywhere. The Twins at least have a punchers chance of advancing past the first round. I have no idea how Cleveland fans feel about that trade. Probably a range of opinions. I am expecting a quiet day tomorrow, but like you said, with this front office you have no idea. I’m confident Larnach stays put. Can money and draft picks be traded nowadays?
  2. It feels more like 'sell' to me too, but not throwing in the towel. It looks like they will gamble on 2023 with their three impressive rookie starters still in the rotation, plus Syndergaard now, plus whatever callups or bullpen games they can patch together. It was probably their best or only chance to get a guy they really liked in Manzardo.
  3. That's what makes this fun. Civale is pitching really well, but the guy from Tampa Bay will flat out mash and could provide a spark for them like Julien has for us. Cleveland has those six years of team control of him, in exchange for 2.5 years of Civale. We hear it all the time, but in this case it is probably true that Civale's trade value will never be higher than it is right now.
  4. Meanwhile, Cleveland is doing what Twins fans want the Twins to be doing: little bit of buying, little bit of selling Another interesting move: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/07/guardians-trade-aaron-civale-rays-kyle-manzardo.html
  5. Well, right. To their credit, Larnach was their starting left fielder as the season opened, but when they started needing roster slots, Larnach usuall drew the short straw because he had options. Larnach does strike out a lot but he can hit and is still among the team leaders for RBI, despite not playing for the last month. Kepler and Gallo are gone next year. I don’t know what problem is solved by trading Larnach.
  6. Falvey called Larnach one of the team leaders back in April, so I would be very surprised if Larnach is traded before really getting a fair shot here. I know the Larnach steam is out there, I’d just be surprised.
  7. How bad is the AL Central this year? Every other team in the American League--except for Oakland--every other team in the American League has a better record than the Twins. The Twins would be in 5th place in the AL West, and in 6th place in the AL East.
  8. That is definitely in the realm of possibility. Barlow has been bad, to be charitable.
  9. The Twins have the best record in the AL Central, but if they don’t come back tonight, they will have the worst record of the remaining teams in the American League except for Oakland. Except for Oakland, all the other teams in the American League have better records than all of the AL Central teams.
  10. The problem with the postseason is that you can’t count on the other teams to beat themselves, like bad teams Oakland, White Sox or KC do
  11. The Twins are awesome that way with their designated hitters
  12. This is a very interesting trade. This is not Cleveland throwing in the towel. I’m a big believer in change of scene making a difference for pitchers, and Cleveland is obviously hoping Syndergaard can find some former glory. He will definitely get his chances. My guess is Cleveland will go with Tyler Freeman at short, a prospect who is waiting to graduate and get regular playing time. Cleveland probably gets better both offensively and defensively, just by playing Freeman or someone else over Rosario. In fact I just dug up a Fangraphs article from earlier today advocating this very thing, that Cleveland should move on from Rosario. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-2023-replacement-level-killers-shortstop-and-third-base/
  13. I think you are thinking of Mike Florio, not Dylan Floro. Football on the brain, I get it. 🙂 (also, Wendy’s)
  14. I do like the trade for Lopez's sake, but it doesn't really move the needle for the postseason. The Twins still need at least 2 or 3 more bullpen arms to slot between Jax and Duran, if they want to make any noise. Thielbar and Stewart are nice arms, but not what is needed, in my opinion. Thielbar is effective and a lefty so obviously that is helpful. I actually thought the bullpen would be better this season. Is there another young left-handed pitcher in the minors with good stuff and good makeup who the Twins could quickly prepare/promote?
  15. Here is my AL Central poker analogy for 2023: Detroit: fold. Kansas City: fold. Chicago: They raised, we called their raise, they folded. yeah, they are that guy*. Cleveland: still in the game, but has all the body language of a team holding poor cards and ready to fold. Twins: Last team standing, hanging around to collect a small pot. I think if the Twins keep swinging the bats, that they will stay hot, or warm enough, to start putting some distance on Cleveland. The goal at this point is to build a cushion so that those Cleveland series later in the season will not be so pivotal like they were last year. *PS, I suck at poker 🙂
  16. You are going to have to give them the credit yourself, because I have no clue what their vision is for this franchise. They have made some transactions, some good, some bad, but the pieces don't fit. I don't think they consider themselves fortunate or maybe they aren't even aware that they are playing in the worst division in major league history, and that their only competitor in the division for the foreseeable future lost its two best starting pitchers to elbow injuries. I do expect Twins Daily to organize a parade on the day the Twins clinch the division. 🙂
  17. If we are describing the Guardians 2022 run as charmed and lucky, then let's be consistent and describe the Twins 2023 season the same way. But the Twins won't really have a stretch run this season. It's been evident for a while now. We are all just drumming our fingers at this point, playing the waiting game, to see who our first round opponent will be and if this is the year we break the streak. Maybe enjoy some baseball in the meantime.
  18. So now that that’s been written about, we can expect the streak to end in his next start. 🙂
  19. 4pm tomorrow? Then this will (or should) be a story for 22 more hours, max 🙂 a 19/20 round pick or prospect or whoever they are are very nice ballplayers, and will dominate rec leagues for the rest of their lives, but in this context they don’t have much leverage.
  20. Actually, that Vazquez substitution and subsequent double play is covered in his Excel spreadsheet, just like every other possible situation. It just happens to be way down in cells DU4259-4290. 🙂
  21. I would think Ryan, Lopez, Ober, Duran, Lewis AND Lee would be enough to land Trout AND Ohtani. Get er done!! 🤣
  22. It was so much fun watching Maeda last night. The scouting report on Maeda should be: Doesn't throw many fastballs, can have trouble staying in the strike zone with his breaking pitches. A guy to wait out. Yet he got through the first inning by mixing his pitches well and getting strikes, and from that point forward just owned the Mariners lineup. He had them absolutely guessing and looking foolish.
  23. Assuming the inning ends here, Correa could get a leadoff hit/walk in the 9th and turns out Taylor could sac bunt in Juliens' spot
