I would need to see at least a full season, better yet 2 or 3 seasons, like the Dodgers or Cleveland had, maintaining a spot at the very top of the leader boards, before I start calling Falvey an elite pitching mind. Hopefully with a new organization. As said, there was a cost to get to this point. Bringing in guys like Pagan, Mahle, etc, needs to be a part of the story as well, and not called quibbles. They have plenty of other whiffs on evaluations, in my opinion these are guys like Pressly, Dobnak, Wells, Thorpe, Gil, SWR, not to mention the train of fill in starters like Schoemaker and Archer, not trading guys like Jay or Gonsalves when they had a chance, and so on. All teams have misses like that, but an honest evaluation should mention the bad with the good and let people decide for themselves. I still think the bullpen is very shaky and the best thing that could happen is that we get a weak draw when we host the 6 seed and play our games in the daytime out of the limelight. Because the only reliever I would trust in a high pressure situation in a prime time game against Houston or New York would be Duran. Duran being the one really solid acquisition after Joe Ryan.

Also, incredible that our boys made Kyle Gibson look like Bob Gibson today. Who had Gibson striking out more batters than Joe Ryan, especially considering Ryan’s hot start? I don’t know if Ryan was upset at some ball strike calls, but you can’t let it affect you. That’s a thing where coaching absolutely makes a difference. Just sit down with him and tell him to forget it. Remind him who is coming up next inning and how to get that strike one, and put it behind you. Maybe someone like Tingler did that and it didn’t work. Not sure.

I’d be curious to know who was listening to Levine talk about Buxton this morning, and who was listening to Provus and Gladden during that 6-run sixth inning today. (The second big inning after the game was already out of reach.)

The Twins Made a Third Base Mistake
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In my opinion, all that Miranda needed back in April/May was a few more days off sprinkled in, or some run at DH, to not let him get inside his own head too far. Also, last season all the writers wrote glowingly about how valuable Miranda was, rookie of the month in July, etc. -

Weird Nerd Mad About Shutout
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to RandBalls Stu's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There were lots of fans opposed to trading Arraez for Lopez when it was just a rumor, but when Miami threw in an A ball player hitting a buck-eighty, it suddenly became a fantastic trade! Not to mention the fans who seemed perfectly satisfied with Rocco pulling Joe Ryan out of a no hitter after the 7th last year. (also against the Royals.) The satire pen will never run out of work! -
It’s a team game, but individual achievements are fun, and raise a player’s stature. Fans and teammates alike want to see individuals do well. I am in favor of Twins starters throwing complete game shutouts. 🙂

Your surprising stat of the day
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
“Pythag is a interesting stat, nothing more” wrote the internet commenter, with his mouth closed. 🙂 -
Great game. Keep Correa at lead off. Buxton does not appear injured in any way, shape or form. Maybe this will be the game that reenergizes Kepler, but we have said that before as well.. For people who believe the old saying about winning 60, losing 60, and it’s the other 40 that count, this was probably a game in the win 60 group.

I mean, it comes down to whether you have a vision for this team or not. Do you? Did you in 2021?

Berrios would have been extended on a new Twins contract, negating that need to trade for Lopez.

Also for people looking for silver linings, remember the Twins squandered their entire 11.0 game lead in the standings in 2019 too, and the world ended that day too. 🙂 but they rallied and won the division anyway.

There seems to be a culture issue, granted, but in this case I think it’s just mistakes compounded on mistakes compounded on more mistakes. Someone will say, “there’s not one thing that will fix this” or “Arraez by himself wouldn’t help this offense.” Yeah, tell me about it. We are too far down the rabbit hole at this point, unfortunately.

I think there was more resistance to Correa than was let on. People had their reasons, like his ankle, or cheating history or Dior comments, but mostly I thought he was just a really poor fit going forward for reasons we have discussed.

When I think of pipeline I think of starting pitching, with bullpen still important but more as a byproduct. So you have guys like Graterol and Duran who got a lot of attention as starters, but looked more like future bullpen arms. I don’t know which pitchers currently in the Twins system are really making people excited as future starters besides Varland, but I’m sure there are some. Cory Lewis as mentioned in the article but still in A+ and a ways to go yet Atlanta would be the new team to emulate as far as building a pipeline, Fried and Wright go on the IL and they don’t miss a beat. Atlanta also promotes their arms quickly, which the Twins are also doing, so we might see a guy like Lewis actually debut for a cup of coffee later next season if he continues to dominate.

Week in Review: Road (Trip) to Redemption?
Hosken Bombo Disco replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Maeda’s body language was that of a pitcher who knows his career is in the balance. That’s what I was seeing, anyway. He pretty much stopped throwing the four seam fastball the second time through the order. That might be a warning flag, He does look to be in better conditioning than he was this spring, however, like not walking off the mound after every inning like he’s completely exhausted. So that’s a good sign. I would be willing to give him some run to see if he can strings some starts together. Hard as it is to believe, both Cleveland and Chicago are having worse years than the Twins. Compounded by the fact that Triston McKenzie and Liam Hendricks both had to go back on the IL with elbow issues. The division is there for the taking.- 19 replies
