    I, for one, cannot imagine why they kept pitching to Alvarez. Were they trying to let him kill one of our firstbasemen? What kind of stupid idea was that?

    I was shocked at how quiet the Astros crowd was last night- the stadium was virtually silent for the middle innings. In the 9th inning the shot from centerfield showed all sorts of empty seats right behind home plate. Big contrast with the last two games at TF (not so much of a contrast with lots of other games at TF).

    Too much talking. Way too much talking. Too much talking over each other. Too much talking about Verlander's family. Too much talking. Missing pitches because we had see shots of his wife and daughter, or him smiling at the crowd? Ridiculous. I think my feelings are clear.

    Excellent list! Biggio getting blocked into the defensive secondary was an appropriate end to his series, which included being unable to grab Max's single in Game 2 and then seeming to strike out in about six crucial situations. If the games this weekend are as intense as the last two I'm going to be completely wiped out Monday morning.

    Agreed. The consistency has really been spectacular. And much appreciated.

    I get that, but a) teams better not care about the outcomes with respect to bettors; for example, Mahomes slid to end the game on Monday night instead of scoring. Was he wrong? b) it's a long season, and the Twins were playing to the end of it. They just aren't at the end of it yet. The Rockies were, let them play hard. Was Toronto supposed to use their top pitcher on Sunday because it was his turn? We're in the playoffs, gotta play the long game, IMO.

    I didn't realize it was allowed in an extra-inning game. I think it was a merciful end to a game that all the players probably wanted to be over anyway. I was watching with my mother and I predicted that some pitcher would be asked to throw a meatball in the bottom of the tenth. The shadows were bad no one could probably have hit it anyway. This was a reasonable solution.

    On an unrelated note- how did we get a position player to pitch in a non-blowout game? Is that only allowed at the end of the season?

    Does Tyler Wells make the playoff roster? He's back, after a 7-week exile to the minors, pitching in relief. Cano didn't have a great September, about as bad as his not-very-good July. His August was spectacular, though. He'll be on the roster of course, but will he close?

    4. Decide whether you want to put Jax in late in a close game during the playoffs. (I know this is part of 2 but you didn't mention him and he terrifies me, at least lately.)

    I really like Wallner's long-term potential, but I agree that he's not inspiring much confidence right now. Hopefully he can trend up over the last couple of weeks of the season.

    I'm seriously ready to have Correa bunt with two runners on, even with one out. This is getting ridiculous.

    Once again, the home plate ump had too much of an impact on the game. That was a bad call, Julien getting a strike called at 3-1 with the bases loaded was a bad call, and I'm glad he appeared to blow the pitch that was strike 3 to end the game. But yikes. I only watched the second half of the game, and while doing other things, so there may have been other obvious bad calls earlier.

    Let's not forget one of the veterans, Donovan Solano. He's really had a month- great contact, clutch hits, playing different positions. Nice work!

    Reports today are that he plans to continue as a DH for the rest of the year. I have no idea if a UCL tear prevents you from swinging a bat well, or if swinging a bat would make it worse. I certainly wouldn't take for granted that there were no medical concerns. Ken Rosenthal's column in the Athletic this afternoons argues that he should still get at least $500 million, just as an offensive player. Hmmm...

    Do the Angels still give him a qualifying offer? A lot of money for a one-year contract to do rehab, if no other team takes a chance? A good shot at a draft pick, but a lot riskier than it would have been two years ago.

    Yeah, it's too bad the Brewers have to play in that dump of a stadium they share with the Packers for half the year...wait a minute...

    We were just at Irish Fest last weekend, touted as the biggest Irish music festival in the world. Have been going for years, wouldn't miss it. Agreed on the Fifth Ward- very walkable, very fun.
