The Minneapolis Sound ostensibly originated at the First Avenue nightclub. Two of the club's neighbors -- hoops and baseball -- are adding compelling harmonies this spring. Play on.

Tips for Listening to Twins Games on the Radio
BH67 replied to MichaelHaas's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not pertinent for today's team, but there is no greater stress reliever than listening to a recording of Herb Carneal calling a Twins game on the radio. Just saying.- 12 replies

But for some Twins fans, the implosion of 2022 will be how they always remember him...,the bad moments overshadowed the good, and will forever keep him among the ranks of polarizing relievers in Twins history. Do you think the Twins even considered a reunion with Pagán? $8M a year for two years to avoid a fan base that chooses to see his glass half empty even after his masterful performances this past September? That's an easy call.. Of course, the Twins understandably wouldn't have paid anything close to that. Emilio, thank you for being key in the stretch run to the Twins winning the 2023 AL Central title. I was a harsh critic, but you earned plaudits galore. Bravo.

You mean maintaining a status quo that was considerably higher than the previous status quo post-Bomba Squad, while doing so in a way that reflects the hopefully temporary obstacle of considerably reduced revenue? The other commenter complained about the wasted funds on Correa and Buxton to get us to the current level of competitiveness. Will you challenge his assertions here likewise?

"There's no other way to frame it: The start of this offseason has been flat-out deflating for Minnesota Twins fans. After watching a promising ALDS fizzle out at Target Field, we've since been informed directly by the team's leadership that we can expect payroll cuts next year. It's a splash of cold water following the franchise's much-awaited resurgence. Thus far, everything we've seen from the Twins in a slow start to the offseason has been suggestive of a commitment to the status quo." Yep, that 2023 Carlos Correa deal was sure a status quo move, as was trading away the popular Luis Arraez to take a chance on Pablo Lopez.. After the TV deal disappeared (temporarily), so were exercising the options on team veterans Max Kepler and Jorge Polanco and giving a qualifying offer to a 35-year-old Sonny Gray. Under the circumstances, Falvine have prepared the Twins tactically well for such a time as this, which I never expected to say even six months ago. No deflation here.

Why the Twins Should Reconsider Cost Cutting
BH67 replied to Adam Friedman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"The Pohlads are the second-richest family in Minnesota. The Twins aren't their primary source of income. No Pohlad, present or future, would be impacted if they chose to go into the red to invest in this team, and we won't even know if they go into the red because their books aren't public. This family is wealthy beyond our imagination and owns a constantly appreciating asset that happens to be our favorite baseball team. If they want us to believe them that they are good stewards of this multi-billion dollar "community asset," they should show some respect for the community and try to win a World Series- instead of sucking any bit of profit out of the organization that they can." How jejune, Adam, and utterly bemusing. Of greater concern is that you would ever consider a baseball team subject to collectivist expropriation, which may not be your intent but is the necessary conclusion of your viewpoint. The past 100 years in our world provide ample proof. Stadium tax subsidies to support major league club owners, which happen far too often, are legitimate gripes. But your gripe does not appear rooted in "corporate welfare." -
But Bruce Bochy doing essentially the same with Josh Sborz, Aroldis Chapman and Jose Leclerc has been a key factor in the Rangers' playoff run. Go figure. I am reminded frequently of the late Stephen Stucker's explanation why a problem occurred in Airplane II: "Could be your dishwashing detergent." Makes more sense than many other social media explanations.

Agreed. Analytics are essential to the modern game and enable competitive advantages previously unrealized. And in 2023, it played a big role in two teams with first-round road series making it to the World Series. Upon reflection, my peeve instead is having 12 teams in the playoffs now and thus increasing the likelihood of such an occurrence. In my lifetime these upsets happen more often in baseball than in other North American sports with expanded playoff pools. A team that dominated the regular season has little better chance of success than a team like Texas or Arizona who see-sawed all year long. I don't like that. Also, the pre-analytics era is where my love of baseball is rooted. As stated earlier, the "three true outcomes" approach is not what made me a fan. And the game is not as fun for me now.
-
Thank you. That summarizes my objection to the modern game mathematically.

Arizona dropped 25 of 32 games in a stretch of July and August. Texas dropped 16 of 20 in August and September, then swept Toronto, and then were swept by...Cleveland. If baseball is so random in achieving ultimate success, I'd rather win on instinct than sabermetrics. The former is more fun to watch.

The Latest On Boston's Pursuit of Thad Levine
BH67 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"The Red Sox originally asked to interview Derek Falvey, but he prefers to stay in Minnesota." Or, Derek prefers a location not spoiled by two decades of winning to create something durable before taking on one of the microscopically examined GM roles. Fine by me, whatever the reason. I never expected to feel this way after September 2022, but the fruits of his and Thad's labor has borne fruit aplenty. -

Jocko87 asserted that poor at-bats were the problem rather than strikeouts themselves. During September, the Twins did well to increase pitch counts on mostly unfamiliar starters and tee off on the bullpen. But the starters flummoxed them in spite of the longer at-bats, and in Game 4 Houston seemed to know the Twins' hitters susceptibilities without the assistance of a trash can. This seems more a team issue than a that of a few hitters. I appreciate and learn from your collective explanations as to what might be causing this.
-
After setting a new MLB record for strikeouts this year, both Falvey and Levine were especially dismissive of the strikeout narrative that has been saddled on the Twins. "I really do not think it should be something we focus on," emphasized Baldelli. "Baserunners and hitting balls hard is really what we did. We did a pretty good job of executing and making decisions at the plate, things like that..." "We weren't trying to strike out more," said Falvey. "But at the same time, we were trying to find ways to get to more power. We've all observed these playoffs to this point. What's mattered most is power, the ability to hit for power. The reality is that striking out less this postseason has not led to more wins..." So OPS unequivocally is the be-all and end-all on offense for the Twins' leadership. To be a regular playoff contender, that's a good strategy to maintain despite occasional failures. Once the division series arrived, however, the Astros countered the power-first approach brilliantly. Wholesale changes thus aren't happening, and having John provide this clarity is terrific. It appears that something else needs be ready during a high-stakes game or series.

Pulling Joe Ryan Was the Correct Decision
BH67 replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I wouldn't have started reading if I felt that way. I love being challenged by and learning from different ideas. I don't mind being wrong or insufficiently knowledgeable about any topic worth my time, as this one is. But I do not appreciate being presumed antediluvian before the argument is presented, and nobody should. -
Pulling Joe Ryan Was the Correct Decision
BH67 replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"Like most efforts of progression, there are those stuck in what the status quo once was unwilling to open their minds, usually due to a stubborn belief system or the desire to combat change, typically induced by fear of the future and its unknown nature." And then I stopped reading, Cody. In my experience, those who consign differing views to the "wrong side of history" before stating the premise behind this viewpoint aren't very confident in the premise themselves. -
4 Things That Went Wrong for the Twins in the Playoffs
BH67 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is a spurious point statistically, but I'll state it anyway: the Twins won three times as many 2023 playoff games as the Braves, Orioles, Dodgers, Rays and Brewers did combined. -
My glass is half-full. And if they sharply reduce the batting whiffs in 2024, it'll be closer to the brim.
-
More battle tested, yes. Simply better? No longer. At this stage, however, battle tested takes on amplified importance. The Twins began realizing their potential on September 1. They did not lose more than two consecutive games at any time after August 11. They're learning to win more from internal confidence than from a surge of emotion. Next year should be something to savor.

I wondered if Pablo López gave Rocco Baldelli the scowl à la Jack Morris to let him pitch the 7th. I then realized my error. He scowled at Derek Falvey instead.
