  1. Fretting over the ups and downs of Twins players is easy to do, and Pablo Lopez has encouraged such consternation over the first two months of the 2024 season. It’s therefore important to remember how high the ups can be, and tonight Pablo induced the top four batters of the Astros lineup (average OPS: .801) into only two singles and a solo home run in 13 at-bats. Several teams realize that level of brilliance from their best talent only rarely during a season. Thus, I’m going to savor this, knowing that Pablo – and several other Twins – have plenty of “up” days ahead in 2024 even if the wheels come off occasionally. Two miles per hour less on a fastball or a slight negative variance in launch angle will matter if sustained over time, but letting that become a dominant narrative isn’t worth my energy.
  2. I agree. My point is that seeing more plate appearances will lead to better results from that strategy later in the season.
  3. Well, if suboptimal pinch hitting via the platoon strategy still achieves the 9th best record out of 30 MLB teams, the strategy is positive on the whole. A larger sample size will help Baldelli optimize the batters needed in these situations as the season continues. Thanks for providing a meaningful analysis here.
  4. The Twins pounded Lynch en masse the second time through the order. Nice to see. And wonderful for Alcala, whose trajectory is much different from that of another familiar Jorge DFAd by the Mets today.
  5. Julien's improved defense is indicative of someone who wants to become a regular Major League Baseball player. The others mentioned here seem to fighting through their struggles, too. And "sophomores" still lack sufficient experience at the big league level when facing elite players who are now familiar with their strengths and weaknesses. I'm delighted that the Twins have quite a few young talents for which such concern is being raised. Beats not having any young talent at all.
  6. Given Bailey Ober's propensity in 2024 to be either unhittable or overwhelmed, Vegas sports books have decided to post an "Ober-under" line in all remaining games this season where he is the projected starter.
  7. Margot gets a single, double and RBI and scores a run. Julien drives in an insurance run in the 8th. So apparently the complaints made here are effective. Who should the commentariat critique tonight in hopes of a huge game tomorrow? (/s. Great win tonight.)
  8. Angel Hernandez has announced his immediate retirement from umpiring MLB games.
  9. I disagree. There was a point two or three seasons ago when the Twins had allowed the fewest runs at midseason in three of their four post-complex leagues (not AAA). That's not accidental. I was frustrated a great deal by the free agent signings in the past few years in the hopes that reliable talent would finally emerge from the farm. I've seen enough to think the current situation is sustainable.
  10. I tip the hat to Falvine for developing a farm system in which a rise and fall like those of Julien, Wallner and Varland can be addressed with increasingly talented players from within. And the system has the skills to bring a renaissance with Miranda, and perhaps these three going forward. Applause is warranted.
  11. If this was a second consecutive home-run-followed-by-hard-base-hits game for Lopez, and he's physically healthy, a lack of confidence under pressure may also be a factor. I don't think that lasts for long if so, Or, he's obviously "just trash now." Yeah, that's the ticket.
  12. Speaking of the law of averages, regression to the mean should occur with the Guardians and Royals soon. And hopefully the T-Wolves on Sunday.
  13. I hereby offer an excellent pairing wine from Napa for our Twins' Cloverdale Tangy. Its name oozes with streakiness, and its tasting notes include flavors of smoked meats -- seriously. Bon appétit! https://www.moduswines.com/hyde/
  14. In recent years the Twins have continually exceeded the average seasonal number of major-league club games lost to injury. I'm curious if this pattern is amplified with respect to each club's top 20 minor league prospects.
  15. Young Mr. Duran is hopefully looking at adjusting his delivery this evening instead of pointing fingers in front of the media. Better to learn that lesson in May than August.
  16. As I struggle with obesity in middle age, I save the term "morbidity" for that concern and not on an extended struggle of my favorite sports teams. And many on this site would have shrieked at calming words when anyone writing them resembled Chip Diller. I thus figured that tonight was OK for some rah-rah. That said -- and my Twins optimism well intact -- I'm discouraged that this team en masse can flip a switch and go from dominance to exasperation, and perhaps back. I thought last September's run had put an end to that. Seeing a 22-year-old basketball star not letting the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune shift his eyes from the prize, or shift his teammates' confidence in getting there, is exemplary. These Twins should pay close attention to their neighbors and learn.
  17. And then they left. And three months from now it will look like a speed bump.
  18. Is it wrong that I expected these Twins to recover strongly from the type of loss they took on Saturday?
  19. Through 38 games: Twins pitchers, 385 K (10.2 per 9 innings); Twins batters, 337 K. Noticeable improvement per our bats.
  20. I woke up every day after Labor Day last season looking forward to a Twins victory. that evening. This spring is even better. Combined with physicists' discoveries that the Timberwolves have not been NBA champs in ANY parallel universe, this is truly uncharted territory for me. Timely hitting throughout, great pitching from Ryan and Duran, and great perseverance from Jax to finish the win against the Jays' ace. Hoping for a similar result now on the hardwood.
