A game with evident October atmosphere brought out the best in so many Twins. SWR was strong after the 2nd inning. Wallner made a big catch. The bullpen ended the 8th and 9th innings by strikeouts with runners on base. And Ryan Jef --- oh, I mean the other lighter-hitting catcher. He goes yard off the Astros closer to win it. Jack Buck's words after a famous Cardinals win in October apply here. "Go crazy, folks! Go crazy!" And here's hoping for no lasting damage to CC4.

Astros (Arrighetti) v Twins (SWR); 7/7/24 @ 1:10pm CT
BH67 replied to Squirrel's topic in Archived Game Threads
A thread here a week ago questioned why people reflexively booed current or former Astros. There'll be no doubt in Minnesota why after this weekend, whether or not the plunking is intentional. -
Quite the smörgåsbord today! Let's feast: Every batter in today’s lineup has a season OPS above .700. Six of them are .800 or better, with Castro, Jeffers and Buxton reaching that standard during the game. The Twins now trail only the Dodgers, Orioles and Yankees in team OPS this season. If the Twins stay healthy, that percentage may yet increase. No need right now for a bat via trade. Alcalá and Sands came up huge in their relief appearances against a very good hitting team. Ryan deserves plenty of credit for 110 pitches and fortitude under pressure. Great final inning by Thielbar, too. Miranda has failed to reach base in his last one plate appearance, alas. But he was on base for the previous thirteen and tied the MLB record for consecutive at-bats with a base hit. Bravissimo, José. At full strength, these Twins are very good at playing baseball. And they play only one more road series this season against a team with a better record.

Only Dustin Pedroia and Bernie Williams also recorded hits in 11 consecutive at-bats since 1940. Miranda is one away from tying the MLB record. Since 1900, Ted Williams holds the record for most consecutive plate appearances on base with 16. That's at least 12 for Miranda now. Big hits for Castro and Santana in the 2nd. Great to see. -
No point in making sense of tonight’s umpteen absurdities. I’ll stick with these: Jose Miranda, you awesome hitting machine. You’re two away from the MLB record for consecutive at-bats with a base hit. Pablo Lopez should be demagnetized whenever he allows the leadoff batter in an inning to reach base. Simple question, Rocco. Why did you bring Josh Winder back for the 8th inning against the top of the Astros’ lineup when trailing by only two…or keep him there when all went awry?

Astros (Dublin) v Twins (López); 7/5/24 @ 7:10pm CT
BH67 replied to Squirrel's topic in Archived Game Threads
The MLB record for consecutive hits is 12 at-bats. Thirteen streaks of at least 10 have occurred since 1960, one of which was accomplished by Jose Altuve. -

Miranda is 0 for his last 7. Outs, I mean. -

Four series this weekend have genuine October vibes: Astros at Twins, Red Sox at Yankees, Phillies at Braves, Brewers at Dodgers. -
The moment when I believed today’s win was coming happened in the third inning, when Trevor Larnach battled for an eight-pitch walk against Kenta Maeda. The former Twin was overwhelmed thereafter. Bailey Ober has averaged 67.5 strikes in his last four appearances. After the second inning today he was in full control. His trajectory is encouraging. And the high-leverage bullpen is fully available on two days’ rest for the surging Astros. The Twins have won six of their last seven series, and their bats continue to be hot against pitching more formidable than what they faced in middle and late June. This is fun. The Reds swept three from the Yankees in the Bronx. The Pinstripes have lost 13 of 17.

As Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits sang, “Sometimes you’re the windshield, sometimes you’re the bug…sometimes you’re the Louisville Slugger, sometimes you’re the ball.” Whichever metaphor you prefer, tonight was the pulverized side. I await the Twins doing the pulverizing tomorrow.

I venture that the Montero's second time through the Twins order will not be so smooth. -
Twins Promote Top Prospect Brooks Lee!
BH67 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A guy named Brooks playing the hot corner for an American League team for years. The precedent is encouraging, but we'll need something other than a vacuum cleaner for a nickname. -
SWR effectively matched Skubal for six innings, after which the Twins won the bullpen battle. He’ll learn from the rough 5th inning. Alcala, Jax and Duran shut down the Tigers impressively. Great to see Farmer and Margot beginning the 3rd inning rally. Hoping that the man who drove them in was only exercising caution with his early departure. Big late inning hits from Buck and CC4 are encouraging. The remaining schedule before the All-Star break includes two struggling teams (Tigers and White Sox), one improving rapidly (Astros), and one that switches between hot and cold (Giants). The Twins appear ready to capitalize.

SWR has kept pace with Skubal through three innings. If he can keep it up until the bullpens arrive, the Twins should win. -
This is Why Byron Buxton is Worth His Contract

"Events, my dear boy. Events." This saying apochryphally ascribed to a British prime minister was demonstrated last Thursday evening in a political debate. Regardless of one's opinion of what happened, the future of this important campaign is impossible to predict even with respect to tomorrow morning. If Hurricane Beryl smashes into Texas next weekend at current strength, you'll see another. And so revenue constraint for this year and next currently is the controlling factor for Twins trades. But there are four weeks for "events" on and off the field to intervene.

Larnach had today’s big hit. Duran won a 10-pitch battle with Raleigh. Ryan looked strong except for the 5th, and he got out of that jam without catastrophe. New day, new heroes. The Twins demonstrated resilience after Friday’s loss and won the series against a strong pitching team with a great home record. Only 6 games behind Cleveland. They increasingly resemble last September.

Eine kleine Obermusik. And all that jazz. 122 pitches, 94 strikes in his last 12 innings. One batter on base from the last 26, and he was picked off first base. -
