  1. Certainly the first. I could use some Alcala Seltzer to soothe the butterflies.
  2. Or, Julien, Vazquez and Martin naturally knock him out with singles to open the 8th. I should never doubt the competitiveness of these Twins.
  3. The Twins' best hope tonight is to keep it 2-1 through this frame and hope the Texas manager pulls Eovaldi to start the 8th. Not unrealistic, but unlikely.
  4. But consistent with how Falvey handles new major league starters, which is why I suggested it would happen.
  5. The Twins had 7 in the 9th inning alone in a game against Houston. That will tilt the season number considerably in their favor, whatever else has happened. Surmising Festa is done after 5 given his pitch count. Hopefully the third time's the charm vs. Eovaldi. (I guess I'm a nerd stat guy.)
  6. I just looked at the Royals' schedule through the end of the season. Home series against the Twins, Guardians and Phillies. Road series against the Guardians, Yankees, Astros and Braves. Arduous.
  7. Jax and Duran were lights out on consecutive nights? And I may tell myself, this is not my usual bullpen!
  8. Brewers up 3-0 on Cleveland in the 1st.
  9. When Wallner walked in the 9th and stole second, Margot followed with a walk, and Santana, Lewis and Miranda were next up, tonight’s game became a must-win. And so they did. The missing firepower on the IL will result in plenty more nights like this, but the offense did enough. Ober did enough. And the Jax-Alcala-Duran assembly line was marvelous. A toast to scrappy victory.
  10. Could Farmer's almanac foretell a plentiful September?
  11. Bailey isn't dominant, but he's getting the job done. Time for the bats to say hello, loudly.
  12. Bailey Ober, last 9 starts: 61.1 IP -- 1.76 ERA -- 1.91 BB/9 -- 10.57 K/9 -- 0.73 WHIP.
  13. Happy Meat Loaf Day. Two out of three ain't bad, especially against the Royals starting trio the Twins faced. These Twins take many losses of this variety and forget them the next day, and I shall also. Delighted that Varland, Richards and Okert ate up eight innings while allowing only three runs, though its inelegance was obvious. Duran's inning wasn't pleasant, though if it de-rusted him for the Rangers and Padres that's okay. Twins high-leverage relievers are less successful in back-to-back games than those in Cleveland, and they struggle with more than three days off between appearances, too. Curious as to whether that durability can increase this fall or next season. For now, 6-7 innings for a starter and at least two relievers to finish looks like the best strategy for a string of victories, regardless of the bats.
  14. I'm not a number! I'm a free man!!
  15. My goodness, the 2025 Twins starting rotation is going to be great, provided that nobody needs Tommy John surgery. As for the current vintage, the Twins offense has thrashed two of the AL's best starters on consecutive nights. A resurgence of juggernaut offense will be well timed against Ragans tomorrow followed by four against the struggling Rangers. And the Twins have allowed only 18 runs in six games against two division rivals with powerful offenses. All that said, I'd like a TSA agent to run a wand over Emmanuel Clase's pitching arm.
  16. An outstanding debut would be nice. But even Willie Mays managed only one hit in his first 26 major league at-bats. Just getting here right now is huge for Zebby, and us.
  17. I've been a municipal finance director in places where there were few cash reserves. In order to succeed, a triage mentality was required -- and that meant certain tasks could be handled only by a single approach in order to maximize innovation and improved financial condition elsewhere. Falvey's drafting approach per starting pitching strikes me as one of those single approaches. I dare say it's proven effective, enough so to deploy available funds for potential big improvements elsewhere (like maximizing team OPS). Very well reasoned on his part.
  18. That was an impressive 2nd inning tonight against a solid pitcher in Brady Singer. Willi Castro appears to be heating up at the plate. Jax, Richards and Blewett provided solid relief to secure the win after Pablo recovered well from a shaky start. When a Twin slumps or suffers an injury, another Twin steps up. Encouraging as always but especially so after two tough losses to Cleveland. Wishing Zebby much success tomorrow. White Sox 11, Yankees 2 in the 8th as I type this.
  19. Cubs within one at the 7th inning stretch in Cleveland (8-7). And Cleveland's star trio in the pen have to be tired.
  20. Cubs lead Cleveland 3-0 in the 4th, with Shota Imanaga on the mound.
  21. I'm not concerned about confidence for either Festa or Matthews. David's initiation was painful, but he learned a lot and is plausible for October. Given Zebby's meteoric rise, a hazing ceremony won't linger.
  22. As Trevor Larnach faced Emmanuel Clase with one out and the winning run on base, I realized that a single pitch would determine the outcome of the game and lead many fans to an overstatement either of glee or gloom. That the Twins came back to have such an opportunity today is worth applauding. Any team that gets in the playoffs has a chance to win it all, and the Twins are well on pace to be a participant. The big issue for me today is that Cleveland has three elite relievers who can get batters out when needed on consecutive days, and at this moment the Twins do not. Longer starts and a healthy lineup at full capacity will determine whether these Twins can overcome that in 2024.
  23. Encouraging signs for starter and bullpen depth tonight. The bats were quiet but Cleveland had to use its elite bullpen arms to secure the win. Three out of four is a good possibility tomorrow for a team fighting hard despite significant injuries.
