  1. My gracious, they're scuffling. Don Meredith's benediction is apt and we're not even halfway through.. Good night.
  2. The first five batters in the Braves lineup have a 2.900 OPS so far tonight. Hopefully, Bailey has gotten this out of his system for the rest of the regular season.
  3. Another product of South Dakota youth. The few, the proud. Herb Carneal filled many summer evenings for me on the prairie. Bailey Ober is having an off night. Perhaps just a bad inning.. It happens. But losing six out of eight (presuming such tonight) marks a genuine Twins slump for the first time since early June. Unpleasant to experience.
  4. Eddy Julien deserves as much condemnation today as Gary Anderson did at the Metrodome 26 years ago – hardly any. In both cases, a single bad play resulting in defeat is only the symptom, and the offense squandering numerous opportunities to put the game away earlier is the cause. Yes, the Twins defense needs to be solid more regularly. But the ongoing feast/famine cycle of the batting lineup is unpleasant, no matter if Correa and Buxton are sidelined. Twins pitchers have found a way to step up while missing a couple key arms. The bats need to do likewise.
  5. For the moment. Both have huge potential in 2025. Matthews will not go past the 5th. Hoping for Sands next if the Twins are still in front.
  6. Your start today made me sigh, young Pablo. (Pause.) More of that, please. The bats arrived en masse against Gray the second time through, just as they disappeared en masse at that point yesterday. I’d prefer something less extreme but closer to the feast, and Zebby will need that help tomorrow to take the series. I’m not concerned about Jax and Duran being used with a big lead. Rust is a frequent affliction with Twins relievers unused for more than three days, and tonight shook that off. They each performed well on consecutive days last week, so I’m confident they can close out a win tomorrow if needed. Cleveland wins, KC loses, and we’re back to Friday morning in the standings. Hanging in but not accelerating. My wish tonight is for an immediate cure to plantar fasciitis.
  7. Tonight's TD game thread is brought to you by: As always, caveat emptor!
  8. Six of the first nine Twins reached base, yet only one run scored. Only two more Twins reached base the rest of the evening against Cardinals pitching that threw only 58% strikes. Rocco looks sage in letting Trevor Richards throw a second inning and maximizing the likelihood of winning two out of three. Throw this game away. However... ...here's a key reason why the bullpen may be tiring: only once in the last 19 games has a Twins starter pitched past the sixth inning. Though starter ERA and WHIP are very good, they throw too many pitches to achieve it. Twins starters in August average 100 pitches per every six innings -- and reducing that number is critically important.
  9. 56 pitches through the 3rd. Festa will not go beyond the 5th tonight.
  10. Twins starting pitchers have averaged 16.51 pitches per inning so far in August.
  11. Given the significant influence of Clark Griffith in the history of pro baseball, these Twins carry by subsequent family heritage a true connection to the original Senators who were, as is said, in a city that was "first in war, first in peace, and last in the American League." Glad to hear about the recent recognition of 1924, but they could've waited a week for better synchronization as the 1987 and 1991 National League champions arrive next at Target Field.
  12. Welcome back, Eddy. Yet another solid start, Simeon. Thielbar on the mound and Vazquez at the plate are showing improvement. So a 4-3 homestand with missed opportunities followed by a 4-3 road trip with self-inflicted missed opportunities is encouraging. Tomorrow, the Guardians face Gerrit Cole in the Bronx. Beginning Monday, the Guardians and Royals meet seven times in ten days, and the Royals’ next 20 games are against the Guardians, Twins, Phillies, Astros and Yankees. Time for the surge, Twins. Well done today.
  13. May the Good Lord take a likin' to you, Parfigliano, and...well, you know.
  14. The Padres paid far too much for that one-time infusion, and that will impair their championship hopes in future years. I point out that Bruce Bochy mostly relied on three relief pitchers during Texas's run to the world championship last autumn. Of course, that trio had to be good on two or three consecutive days, a trait that Cleveland's closing trio this year clearly demonstrate. I remain hopeful that one or two Twins will achieve this by October. I hoped that the decision to use Jorge Alcala for a third time in four days against Texas would shame Rocco Baldelli from experimenting in high leverage situations for the rest of the season. Last night, he instead doubled down. Because Twins starters are routinely pitching six or seven innings now, I'm less concerned than most here about postseason depth. Without a healthy lineup it won't matter anyway. I have lost faith in Baldelli's skill to deploy it, however.
  15. I'm a Rocco Baldelli fan. But I need at least a week to process him making bullpen decisions that surpass 41-Doughnut twice in 54 hours.
  16. A shot of Bailey's will be doubly enjoyable before I call it a night.
  17. For the record, Alcala's allowed OPS today was 2.571.
  18. I'd have felt better about Rocco experimenting with Alcala's endurance on consecutive days if he'd pulled Jorge after the Seager double. And it seems like this was an experiment.
  19. FINAL: Brewers 2, Guardians 0.
  20. My rationale for the projection was to see what we traded for a not-at-all bum Steer. I got my wish. Hopefully we're done with Adventures in Pablo for the day. Meanwhile, the Guardians have managed a plunked batter on base through four innings, and nothing else.
  21. Is it okay with everyone if I picture Spencer Steer on the mound for the Rangers today?
  22. The last three games explain why I am optimistic about the Twins in October. Big plays come from the least expected places occur night after night, with the bottom three of the order breaking through tonight against a dominant Nathan Eovaldi in the 8th to start the comeback. Another great start for David Festa kept the Twins close, and the bullpen of Henriquez, Alcala and Sands shut the Rangers down to secure the win. For all their injuries and uncertainties, the Twins after 123 games are only three games behind the best record in Major League Baseball. A healthy Correa and Buxton are necessary for a genuine run to the World Series, but they keep fighting regardless. Sellout crowds on the nine-game homestand beginning next weekend are well deserved.
  23. I explained why I think Rocco did so in the Wednesday postgame thread. Brewers win.
  24. After 8 in Milwaukee: Brewers 2, Guardians 1.
  25. Certainly. But not in this venue. In other news, the White Sox will be mathematically eliminated from the playoffs in about 15 minutes, and before the opening of the Minnesota State Fair.
