Royals trail 7-2 in Oakland. Edmonton stays alive for the Stanley Cup. And Platoon is now showing at Target Field. -

From the Cold Comfort news desk, Seattle leads at Cleveland 7-1 in the top of the sixth. -
Yes, the Twins will make the playoffs. They're 40-18 against teams other than the Guardians, Yankees and Orioles. Their bullpen is deep and dependable. Several hitters are well above their career OPS this season, and the team is striking out considerably less at the plate than they did last year. From my vantage point, what hangs over the the 2024 Twins is the size of their 2025 payroll. Absent a sure and copious flow of media revenue, all the hopes and ambitions for this year will be constrained. If so, a core of players now at Wichita and St Paul are being prepared for starting roles beginning next year, and no additional large contracts will be pursued either now or during the offseason. And frankly, until the Twins can measure up to the Yankees or Orioles on the field, a three-month solution to challenge in 2024 seems imprudent.

Make It Official! Twins 6, A's 2: Splashes, Not Ripples
BH67 replied to Hans Birkeland's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Bailey missed seven innings by just two outs. Run support with echoes of the Bomba Squad also appeared. I essentially got what I wished for on Friday night. Let's sweep this. I’ll confess, however, that when the Twins left seven on base in the first three innings, I was truly in my element as a Minnesota sports fan.- 15 replies

A's (Estes) vs Twins (Ober): 6/15/24, 1:10pm (postponed)

I didn't know the specific area of the strike zone as determined by Major League Baseball, so I went to MLB's website today and found this, which has been in place since 1996: “The Strike Zone is that area over home plate the upper limit of which is a horizontal line at the midpoint between the top of the shoulders and the top of the uniform pants, and the lower level is a line at the bottom of the knees. The Strike Zone shall be determined from the batter's stance as the batter is prepared to swing at a pitched ball." That may be common knowledge here, but this was news to me. I'm still looking on the site for the legal proviso regarding Angel Hernandez's strike zone...perhaps that was removed after his retirement. -
SWR and Jax had off nights. Margot and Vázquez began their regression to the mean at the plate. A big opportunity to take the lead in the 8th was missed. And the Twins won anyway, a clutch team performance when it mattered. Messrs. Kepler, Sands and Duran were tonight’s heroes, and Buck’s and Correa’s bats are heating up. Here’s hoping Bailey has a 7-inning start and considerable run support Saturday. A guy can dream.

Regression to the mean can be very good if a higher mean is attainable. It appears that SWR is attaining one, and I'm optimistic that the mean hasn't fallen (yet) for anyone else in the rotation. Or it's an amazing coincidence. Lots of folks here tell me that the Twins are not good with player development.

A's (Medina) vs Twins (Ryan): 6/13/24, 6:40pm

Luis Medina’s pitching has become funky and cold. Perhaps the Twins can apply the coup de grâce here. -
I awoke today to find TD telling me why Alex Kiriloff had to be sent down. I prepare for my afternoon to find TD telling me about new matchup problems as a result of his replacement. I read both articles and the tone for each was measured and not panicky. I get the impression that the current dilemma will last only a short time. That's good. Seeing the clickbait headlines made me think otherwise. It may draw more attention to the articles, but still, that's not good. Online news aggregation sites engage in this tactic to an extreme degree, and thankfully that's not a problem here. I'm a Twins optimist but not a Pollyanna. I perceive that matters relating to team tactics at TD are conveyed usually through a glass half empty. The information and statistical data here are excellent, so I keep reading, but I have to brace for the initial reaction.

Oye cómo va, indeed. -
Looking for Mr. Thielbar no longer, alas. Caleb has been a rock in the Twins bullpen for so long. But the sun is setting, and the horse is saddled. So far in June (continued): Jeffers, .240 OPS (28 PA). Not a misprint. But Louie...well done tonight.

Rockies (Hudson) vs Twins (Paddack): 6/10/24, 6:40pm

Answering my own question: YES. After that walk, Manuel Margot has an 1.129 OPS so far in June. -

From paralysis against the Yankees to Margot and Vázquez bringing across the first run tonight. Franz Kafka is writing this script, isn't he? -
So the switch flips back instantly into confident mode. Winning streak ahead, I expect. The next time the Twins face the Bronx Bombers, they should wear some virtual reality lenses that put their opponents in White Sox uniforms.

Through five innings, the fecklessness was breathtaking. After the rally in the 6th and 7th, it is also arguably hypnotic.

Game Thread: Twins vs Yanks 6/5/24 6:05 PM
BH67 replied to Dave The Dastardly's topic in Archived Game Threads
There appears to be one song text that the majority of TD readers sing whenever the Twins face the Yankees. I don't subscribe to this for such a situation, but I offer to those who do the following lines from the Requiem Mass. You can look up the translation of the Latin and sing along. You're welcome. Dies illa, dies irae, calamitatis et miseriae, dies magna et amara valde. -
Twins Relievers Are Pitching Out of Their Minds
BH67 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I remember well last August on these pages where any plaudits for Griffin Jax were countered by a larger wave of disgust. How time flies. To me, the constant of recent MLB pitching philosophy is that a deep bullpen is essential for genuine playoff contenders. For all the whiffs in free agency along the way, the Twins appear to have built a great one in 2024. Failures will happen in critical games still, but the pen's current quality is not a fluke. -
As play ends on June 2, the Twins' next opponents above .500 after the Yankees are the Seattle Mariners, on the road June 28-30. And no other before the All-Star break.
