  1. So it's practically a five-and-a-half game lead for the Twins with 22 games to play. Cleveland now heads to Anaheim for four against the freefalling Angels, of which they should win at least three -- but series against San Francisco, Texas, Cincinnati and Baltimore remain ahead for them. Meanwhile, these Twins don't appear to be watching scoreboards. A great two-week run has revealed a justifiable team optimism in the final days of the regular season. The division title is a matter of when, not if.
  2. The Twins finished the first half one game under .500 -- but did so against a schedule that included the Braves, Dodgers, Astros and 29 of their 32 games against the AL East. And they were at or near the top of the majors in ERA, strikeouts pitched, and quality starts. They had come through a difficult stretch ably. So underestimation is I think accurate. Then for a month after the break they became the Box of Chocolates, swept by Kansas City but taking two of three in Philadelphia, for example. I wrote before last week's Cleveland series that I hoped for Chocolate Truffle and not Crunchy Frog. But their confidence and determination were just coming into bloom, and the last week revealed it after the heart-wrenching loss in the final Cleveland match at Target Field.. So much so, that these Twins no longer resemble Russell Stover. You know you're getting their best effort every night now. As for moderating that early schedule imbalance, the Twins have 16 games remaining against the Mets, White Sox, Angels, A's and Rockies. And these Twins will fight hard no matter the ineptitude they face.
  3. It's just one win...but what a statement in achieving it. Now 7-4 in this stretch against Cleveland and Texas. Great opportunity to finish off Cleveland by winning Tuesday and Wednesday.
  4. And there's the cherry on top of this Lollapalooza sundae. Lopez loads the bases with two out and faces Kwan for the fourth time -- and gets him out.
  5. They missed the extra point? Rats.
  6. That would be Jim Rice, with 36. He did so at least 29 times in four consecutive seasons (1982-85), during which he also drove in 448 runs. Rally killer, though. And I'll consider Correa's five errors all season at shortstop an acceptable substitute for the power.
  7. Ballgame! (as Cleveland radio announcer Tom Hamilton would say had Cleveland won -- but not today.) Twins 71-66 Cle 66-71 Magic number 21.
  8. The Twins won five of seven against a likely playoff team in a ten-day period late in the pennant race. If their lead shrinks, it's only because their nearest pursuers took five of six in the same timeframe against two similar teams. Regardless of what happens the next three days, the Twins are playing with confidence and determination. They're not going to "blow this," whatever the final outcome. (PS: Walker Jenkins has a 1.111 OPS at Fort Myers after today's game. At age 18.)
  9. I applaud Messrs. Floro, Funderburk, Winder, Jax, Thielbar, Pagan, Headrick and Duran for another great night in the bullpen. And even though Emilio's control was awful, he gave up only one run for the inning after walking the first three batters faced. His last month has been a big improvement from before. Now, Emilio shouldn't have been needed at that point, but Mr. Baldelli saw fit to blow through the bullpen depth by having the first five relievers get 11 outs on 36 pitches. Rocco literally expected seven relievers to handle the last 17 outs and preserve a narrow lead. I'm sorry. Expecting seven pitchers to each keep a run off the board to win one game is ludicrous. Duran needed to pitch the 9th the last two days to rebuild his confidence. It appears to have worked. And five runs in the fourth after the first two batters were retired, followed by the 10th inning surge against Aroldis Chapman, were a testament to the grit and tenacity of these Twins. They'll win the division, much sooner if their manager would get out of their way.
  10. Didn't seem like a situation to use Duran, but then I noticed he was facing 1-2-3 in the Rangers' lineup. That should be a confidence booster for him. Thanks to Ryan, the Twins had a real chance once Scherzer's night was over, and the bats delivered. Magic number 23. By the way, the Twins' final nine games are home against the post-waiver Angels, home against the A's, and on the road against the Rockies.
  11. Duran is that closer. Today he didn't do his job, and unfortunately a closer not doing his job is often the biggest contributor to losing a game. Given a huge opportunity, Jhoan blinked. But that's our horse, and we ride him as long as he stays healthy. Hopefully he figures it out mechanically...and emotionally.
  12. If "tanking" removes any hope of the Angels retaining Shohei Ohtani, well...stupid is as stupid does. Need a win today, indeed. But after Monday's Twins performance, I'm much more confident about the Twins winning the division no matter the result.
  13. Cheers to Pablo Lopez for overcoming a slow start and getting through six innings. Cheers to Michael A Taylor for again showing a hot bat in clutch late-game situations. Cheers to the Twins' evident resilience despite falling behind early. Not discouraged, or even disappointed. Go get 'em tomorrow.
  14. July 24, 1965 Cardinals-Dodgers. August 22, 2007 Rangers-Orioles.
  15. My favorite three-inning save happened when Texas beat Baltimore 30-3 some years back, Texas's starter went six, followed by a single reliever. That box score is my second favorite, behind only the 1965 game where Bob Uecker homered and drew an intentional walk off Sandy Koufax.
  16. It would still be a crunchy raw dead frog, no matter how lovingly they frosted it with glucose.
  17. Box. Of. Chocolates. QED, I enjoyed the salted caramel this weekend, undoubtedly. The next three days vs Cleveland will be either Chocolate Truffle or Crunchy Frog -- nothing in between.
  18. So both weekend games are won without removing the bat from the shoulders. Not at all surprised. Magic number 26.
  19. To Dylan Floro: well done, sir.
  20. Sadly, he may want to ask the same question staring into a mirror.
  21. Winning run on 2nd. Nobody out. Royce up.
  22. Cleveland scored four in the top of the 11th in Toronto.
  23. Did he make up for it?
