    Ergo, the team with the deepest first-rate bullpen is most likely to compete for division titles and league pennants. And therefore homegrown bullpen talent is also needed in large numbers, especially since the Twins' forays into bullpen free agency usually have not been positive. Here's a question for everyone's consideration: do you see a positive correlation between increased velocity and occurrences of Tommy John surgery? I may ask this again in a more timely post since most of you have already read it.

    Two long-standing themes of this season converged tonight: resilience under adversity, and a huge opportunity to win wasted with the top of the order up. Well, it's never boring...

    In 2004, the Yankees had a steady bullpen progression featuring Paul Quantrill in the 7th, followed by Tom Gordon in the 8th and Enter Sandman in the 9th. Admittedly, the Curse of the Bambino shattered over them that October, but until then the Yankees looked poised for a seventh Anerican League pennant in nine years. Sons of the first two are emerging as stars as this September approaches: starting pitcher Cal Quantrill in Cleveland and Nick Gordon with the Twins. Genetics and confidence play a role in their burgeoning talent, but Cal and Nick also have their dads' understanding of how to succeed in clutch situations with high stakes. That's a nice intangible for this stretch run and in years to follow.

    Good time for a Twins surge. Even with five straight wins, they remain 3 games back of the third wild card spot and 1.5 back of Cleveland. Finishing a sweep tomorrow and then taking advantage of the fading White Sox this weekend is essential. It was another strong night for the bullpen (even for Magill, who retired Bogaerts and Devers after giving up a walk and a double), and we saw plenty of offensive support around Nick Gordon on his magnificent evening.

    Encouraged to see Rocco let Bundy pitch to Bogaerts, Devers and Martinez a third time. The bullpen was needed immediately thereafter, but Dylan has earned that chance. Hopefully, more of this to come. Bullpen was in shutdown mode -- Duran took care of the 2-3-4 in the 7th impressively. Lopez had another great finish. Urshela, Arraez and Miranda each reached base three times, and Gordon reached in both his plate appearances. Of course, past performance is not a guarantee of future results -- especially with these Twins. Much to savor tonight, and time to be Orioles fans for the next three days.

    Samuel Beckett's play Waiting for Godot is an existentialist tale of two indolent characters waiting for days for a certain Godot to show up and talking about meaningless drivel as they wait.. Godot never shows up, but even if it happened they're not sure why they want to meet Godot or what they'd talk about. Normally you'd buy a ticket to see this at the Guthrie. But it's now playing nightly at Target Field.

    The Twins threw this one away is so many aspects, and this is the seventh or eighth game this year for which this is true.

    A manager in the Twins farm system allowed a pitcher to throw a complete game and to face the top of the order of the Dodgers' AA team for the fourth time with the tying run at the plate in the 9th. Are you sure this actually happened?

    Nineteen times is pretty generous. 101 pitches over 6.2 innings from the pen without allowing a run or an extra-base hit. Honestly, one cannot predict what the Twins will do from one day to the next. The Twins play 14 games against the White Sox and Cleveland in September. They surely control their own destiny.

    Injuries have been a Twins problem for several years. If they're consistently above the MLB team average of player days on the disabled list (for which confirmation or refutation is appreciated), some fundamental changes to conditioning strategy are essential.

    Several people jumped on me yesterday for suggesting Correa merited a day off. Now I see several people trying to explain that Correa is a bust, which if true suggests that a day off might actually help both him and the Twins. Is it worth this much emotion to see-saw wildly about our vicarious connection to a baseball team, or its players, or their salaries? Or their launch angles? Or their BABIP aberrations? Some folks apparently need the Twins to "succeed" to make their lives mean something, but if that success comes up short of an American League pennant then it's "not successful enough". It's baseball. A game.

    Both got the opportunity at the plate to start the 9th and the tying run came across. Buxton is evidently far from 100%, and this was Correa's first off day since the All-Star break. Robots they are not.

    Outstanding effort by Cole Sands today to keep the Twins in the game while much of the pen got needed rest. "Spahn and Sain" in Chavez Ravine Tuesday and Wednesday, I reckon. Let's hope they can each go at least 7 innings.

    73 bullpen pitches Friday. 73 bullpen pitches Saturday. Lopez used in a non-save situation after a save opportunity last night. This is not sustainable. But we're 4-2 against the Jays. Six cylinders of a V8 engine tonight instead of the usual four. Awesome to see 7 extra base hits, a 3-hit night for Piranha Luis, and insurance runs in the 8th. Never boring and never quitting, our Twins of '22.

    Ryan rebounds well from a rough outing. 3/4ths of the new Twins make a huge contribution today. And the Twins bullpen needs only 50 pitches to hold the lead for 4 innings, precisely what the Tiger pen did yesterday.. The reinforcements are welcome. Now the top of the lineup needs to find another gear. If that happens, meaningful October baseball is quite possible.

    Detroit bullpen tonight: 4 IP, 2 singles and 1 walk on 50 pitches (36 strikes). Regardless of the Twins' missing bats, that's a big disappointment.

    The Twins dropped to +5 vs .500 on Friday for the first time since May 17. They've hovered between +6 and +10 for the previous two months. I remain convinced of their dauntlessness because they are holding steady in spite of various key parts slumping, getting injured, etc,, without exception -- usually more than one key part at a time. But one can bail water only for so long before exhaustion sets in. And we're here. Would a major trade be enough to make things noticeably better in the stretch run? I doubt it. A lineup that usually starts with Arraez, Correa, Buxton and Polanco should not be struggling this much. The bullpen blows up far too often. And the starting pitching is weakening considerably as a whole, which makes all other perceived upgrades meaningless. Falvine don't seem very good at plugging free agents into available holes. They are, however, showing a knack for drafting good pitching and developing it in the lower rungs of the farm system. The Wolves made a rash trade for Rudy Gobert, but he and a core of KAT, Edwards and McDaniels have the talent and attitude to make an NBA title run within three years. If they fail, at least it will be fun to watch. I don't see a similar surge happening on the other side of the 394 parking garage right now, so I'm against anything that provides a tourniquet at the expense of the future.
