  1. The bloom is off Bailey Ober's rose.
  2. Gallo and Floro should not play another game for the Twins. Thielbar and/or Pagan should have thrown a second inning. And I'd be making seven figures if the Twins cared what I think. Can we clone Tom Kelly?
  3. Polanco v Scherzer: Unpredictable. Gallo v Scherzer: So predictable that Vegas bookmakers won't lay odds.
  4. The streaking Nats beat the fading Marlins today. Arraez was 0-for-4 and is now batting .351. White-hot before the break, cooler in August. Just like last year. The Lopez trade was worth it despite the risk and my deep sadness over missing Luis's enthusiasm.
  5. No, but it dates you quite evidently. Speaking of history, I watched highlights from the first two games of the 1987 ALCS this morning, capping with Berenguer's masterful 9th inning in Game 2. Put a smile on my face to sustain me through tonight's episode of this current Box of Chocolates I root for.
  6. Bullpen depth problems? When has that ever happened for Falvine? /s
  7. Spicy. Dominant. Fleeting? Is Ernest or Julio Gallo available instead?
  8. And so begin two weeks of reckoning for the 2023 Twins. They could effectively clinch the Central. They could spiral downward in freefall. Most likely, they'll muddle through and be 3-4 games in front when the Mets arrive on September 8. I have the Vikings when I need Ingmar Bergman and existentialism. I don't need a double dose.
  9. Five hits allowed on 19 pitches...a 0.26 HP ratio (no W or I).
  10. Tigers win. Guardians just beat the Dodgers 8-3. And now, the Florocarbons.
  11. Two hits through eight...Rortvedt with a 7th inning single. I'm shuddering thinking of John Sterling's Rortvedt home run calls...
  12. So the Yankees in late August muster one base hit through six innings at home against a sub-.500 team. And the hit was a solo home run by Ben Rortvedt.
  13. The Wind Surge enter today leading their division of the Texas League in the second half. They're not done yet.
  14. There was a palpable foreboding on the game comment board the moment Gray's perfecto disappeared. And it's sad, and eerily predictable, how often the 2022 and 2023 Twins have justified such feelings.
  15. My favorite adjective to describe the Twins over the past two seasons: Fragile.
  16. I kept my typewriter and mouth shut, and the perfecto was broken up anyway. I'm blabbing uncontrollably next time.
  17. Guardians salvage a split vs. the Tigers. 5 up with 39 to play, I suppose I should panic.
  18. Struck out the side in the 9th tonight vs the Pirates. Threw 13 strikes out of 14 pitches vs. the Tigers. I'll say "No."
  19. In yesterday's wrap I indicated the need for a solid bullpen en masse to succeed in today's baseball. And lo and behold, I get a textbook example today. Maeda struggles through four innings. Possibly a sign of him worsening, but it happens to everyone not named Greg Maddux occasionally. Floro throws six pitches to get through the fifth...and then Pagan, in perhaps his best stretch as a Twin, gets through the sixth on 15 pitches. And then...Jax, who got pounded. And then Balazovic. And then Winder. I would never count on five relief pitchers to be awesome on the same day. And considering how few pitches Floro and Pagan threw, why not keep each in for a second inning? Perhaps the SABR-metrics backed Rocco's switches in those instances, but the consequence is an expectation to nail the Pick 5 at Canterbury.
  20. Success in modern baseball seems to depend most on the quality of the bullpen en masse. Not my flavor, but oh well.
  21. Wallner with the Grand Slam/Sombrero exacta. That's rare.
  22. After this week, my only advice is the following, as spoken by Faber College ROTC student Kevin Bacon: Remain calm. All is well.
