i don't claim to know the rules, but if they ask the 3rd base umpire, it was clear Naylor swung and did not get to first, (because of the umps). I don't know how an inadvertent play stop is ruled, but Rocco should have had Jeffers throw to first and then ask the 3rd base umpire if he swung (he clearly did). Now this probably gets both managers appealing the play and the ruling would be interesting. Maybe the Twins get a do over be cause of inadvertent umpire error. Maybe someone who knows better than me can weigh in.

This was a decent change of scenery trade. Lopez was a definite non-tender candidate, if the Twins could not fix him. It means the Twins need another solid reliever, but that also now could be a pitcher who is a free agent at the end of the year and just count on the returners for next year.

Twins with most of their better talent, close to the majors had better use this window. WIth Lee and Martin at AA or above, and Lewis and Polonco close to returning, we should be able to win the division, winning a game or two will depend on the better players hitting. Next year with a number of players with midrange salaries gone, we should be fine. White Sox, and Royals look years away, and Cleveland and Detroit will not compete without major influx of money.

Week in Review: Stuck In Their Ways
beckmt replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think you would be looking at a high level propect a AA or AAA from a club in a win now mode. We must get better and have questions to if either Laurnach or Wallner would be better or more swing and miss. Otherwise bring up the kids, could not be any worse.- 59 replies

Week in Review: Stuck In Their Ways
beckmt replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
maybe not a rebuild, but a reset. Firing Popkins will accomplish little but is a start. My mother-in-law used to say about preachers the message wears thin after about 7 years and change should be made, use that from Rocco. As far a players, DFA Gallo, send Miranda down, bring up Lee (can't be any worse). He may not be ready, but I would bring up Martin and try and inject some speed and push into this lineup. At least make the pitchers worry when someone gets on base about the steal. I think if the FO felt that Wallner or Larnach would be any better they might well be here. Offer Gray and Maeda reasonable extensions during this break, If they do not take them, at least explore a trade. There are many teams looking for pitching and as July 31 comes closer, you might well get an overpay for a starter. I might also add Ryan to this list as he seem like a pitcher who can beat the bad clubs, but not the good. Not quite ready to give up on the FO, as the pitching pipeline seems like it might work, just have to find hitting.- 59 replies

Louie Varland Has a Home Run Problem
beckmt replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If Maeda is not yet ready, I would rather give starts to Headrick or Balzavick in the short term. Let Varland learn the craft in St. Paul for the time being. Best would be Maeda and piggyback with Headrick for the time being. Anything has to be better than this. -
so does the rest of the division, so no change. We need to fix the hitting, but still getting little help from the umps, whose strike zone seems to be random where the twins are involved. Can't wait for the automated strike zone.

He is young enough to take the risk, but I would want 3 FA years to make it work, maybe 3/27 to 3/33 would be the range. I think 2 years would be more risk and better for him. He will have to take at least a 2 year pillow, so I would want three. You can never have too much pitching. Also protects us against many of the youngsters failing,. Only other way would be Gray for 2 years, but he is going to want 3 - 4.

Official: Kyle Farmer activated, Jose Miranda optioned
beckmt replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
In real life, seeing that Lewis will be ready in about a month, and we have other outfield options, maybe using Miranda and Laurach in a trade for more pitching or a better outfielder is the way I would go. -
Twins now in grace period with Diamond Sports group
beckmt replied to David HK's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Twins contract ends after this season, and according to news reports are reluctant to resign with them. Twins were now listed as 1 of the teams not paid as required. This puts them in the 15 day grace period after which according to the story I saw, MLB will attempt to reclaim the rights. Diamond Sports has according to the story I saw paid 8 teams in MLB. Should be interesting. -
Cedar Rapids Kernels Opening Day Roster - 2023
beckmt replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I like the idea of having them a close road trip away. Makes life interesting. Am looking forward to seeing this group, but had better go before the end of June. Have a feeling many of these will be in Wichita before July.- 18 replies

I don't see Kepler being the answer, maybe you can trade him for a bag of warm balls, when Polanco comes back, he is the most likely candidate to be gone.

Just remember (and it is interesting for the legal beagles), Manfred has said if Bally rejects one contract, MLB will attempt to terminate all. Given the anti-trust status that MLB now has, it should be interesting. Long term either areas or teams will set up their own RSN's or everything will be streaming. This will also affect the cable companies as they will lose many subscribers without the local sports on the cable. Since I don't know the ad revenue numbers maybe some combination of streaming and local TV is where it ends up Then you have the major issue of the cord cutters, and people who use VPN's to gain access.

Another Setback for Austin Martin
beckmt replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
has anyone done a study on whether this is a result of throwing breaking balls much earlier in their career, maybe a early as junior high school. I would be interested in a study like this, because these injuries did not happen back in my day (I am in my 70's). Or maybe it was the development of the slider and other said sharp breaking balls that make a difference. Still unfortunate, if he was to be out all season, it will be hard to see where he could fit with the Twins. Then just get him healthy, hope he hits in AAA and use him in a trade for pitching, there are many clubs who need middle infielders or 3B.- 27 replies

Twins 2023 Position Analysis: Third Base
beckmt replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
One other thought, he is the type of player with a decent prospect that could pull a front line starter out of pitching rich Miami. We have a lot of prospects who could play 3B.- 22 replies

SWR and Ober are probably both ready to pitch up here if needed. I am much more worried about the pen than the starters. Twins have more depth than they have ever had. Plus position wise they have Julian, Lewis(midseason), Lee (may be ready), plus maybe late this year or next year Martin, plus Larnach and others maybe coming. I feel great about the depth, and just hoping things go well.

Pivotal Year Looms Large for Rocco Baldelli
beckmt replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not a Rocco fan, My feeling this is playoffs or bust. That means make it or let Rocco walk. FO has worked hard to make this a winning team. You have to produce one. Other posters have talked about the lack of fundamentals, that is an issue, also what are they doing to stop KC and Cleveland from running all over us. These questions need to be answered or we need a new head man.- 26 replies

Second Base Is Twins Most Intriguing Position in 2023
beckmt replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Polonaise is one of the few players we have worth a front line starter we are losing at least two at the end of this season. Just a thought. I prefer pests with speed and high on base percentage so if one of the youngsters pans out, time to move him. you also forgot Salas who could also rocket through the system.- 37 replies

pitching seems to be a numbers and development game. Right now I like our numbers. Hajjar was considered to be a low risk, high floor starter. Good chance of reaching the majors, upside was more likely a #4 or #5 starter. Steer was totally blocked here by other prospects, not that he could not be better than most in the long run, his chances of doing that were lower. The outfielder, just look at the numbers, he might be good, but who was he going to jump in front of. We don't know how Mahle will turn out, if he has a good year, maybe we can extend him, or at least tag him. Lopez I would try and extend. Maeda is how he looks this year and what he wants. He is more of a pitcher, who has a chance of being decent into his late 30's. Then you have the rest of the pipeline, we have numbers which make me believe a least a few will work out, and more will probably become bullpen pieces. This year will be the test, see who sticks and who we need to move on from.

The Guardians have gotten a fair number of their pitchers in trade, only seem to identify them when in the minors. Same concept only they seem to get some of their pitchers as throwins to deals.

Twins Trade Luis Arraez for Marlins' Pitcher Pablo López
beckmt replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This one hurts, but Gray is 32 and will probably want more years/money than the Twins feel comfortable with. Mahle had shoulder issues last year and will be at least midseason before Twins feel like possibly offering an extension and Maeda is 34 and Twins should see what he wants, and if doesn't work he walks at the end of the season. Ryan to me is a #4 starter with some upside. So where is your ongoing pitching coming from? Some of the prospects will probably make it, but asking 3 of them for next year seems like a lot. Julien will be here, and had no open spot. So they made one. Now the question is what do the Twins do with Polonco? (Kepler is good as gone). -
What to Make of Carlos Correa's Ankle Issue
beckmt replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Remember we still need pitching, so one or two of the outfielders/infielders will not be here come spring training. They are probably not trading Lewis or Lee unless the deal is a blockbuster, but Martin could be in play along with Kepler and Polanco and Julien to move for a starter or reliever (check out Miami they have an excess). -
4 Twins Prospect Debuts to Be Excited About in 2023
beckmt replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
RIght now, trading Martin would be selling low. I am sure the FO is getting a number of those calls. I am hoping Kepler and possibly Polonco are traded to open up room for the youngsters. Biggest issue is that trading Polanco will also be selling low, so am expecting the those will be either late spring training or moves in June and July.- 32 replies

Considering the numbers this group seems to be better than most major league clubs, just no superstars yet, maybe Lewis in time. A few of the lower ones may still make it, but outside of Rodriquez, none seem top flight. Twins will go as far as the young pitchers will take them after this year. One note, I thought Baltimore had DFA'ed Vallimont, but I could be wrong.

Jorge Polanco Has a Looming Decision
beckmt replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Polonce probably has one of the biggest trade values of the Twins if healthy. That is a big if. My guess is the Twins wait until late in training camp to see how he looks, and maybe if he looks good, Twins get an offer they can't refuse as they have 2 - 3 players coming up that will probably play 2B, and Arraez can fill in with Gordon until they arrive. I do not have the fear of a weaker defensive infield with the current Twins pitching, most of them are FB and strikeout types.- 29 replies
