  1. Maybe the answer is the pitching coach. Is it time to fire Rick Anderson and promote Bobby Cueller?
  2. The A's are at .500 with the worst batting average and OB percentage in the American league, why because they can pitch. You can make do with less hitting if your staff can hold the opposition to 4 runs a game. Fans come out to see a ballclub that has a chance, without pitching the Twins do not have a chance. The Twins offense is not good enough at the bottom of the lineup to score the 850- 900 runs in a year to compete without pitching Twins have to improve both the starting pitching and the lower part of the lineup to make it back to the top. We need to trade anyone on this team (except Mauer who is untradeable) to improve orgainization pitching depth. That will put the onus on Terry Ryan and the scouts to find the correct prospects, but the Twins cannot live with the starting pitching we have now. Only by bringing in a lot of prospect(upper level) will the Twins be able to become relevant again.
  3. Twins hitting will be irrelevant without decent starting pitching. I am for trading anything for pitching that can miss bats. Clubs like Toronto and Oakland have learned to swing hard against the pitch to contact pitchers. When these type of pitchers are slightly off their pitches end up in the bleachers. No club can survive 5.5 starting pitching ERA. If you figure that only maybe 10 - 20% will ever make or do well in the major leagues- the twins need numbers of good arms to find the right pitchers.
  4. I feel the Poland's should take a page out of the Wild's book. You have to spend money to make money. They will have to sign at least one decent FA pitcher (probably from the second tier(if not two)). The lineup is solid and maybe you can make a trade in spring training out of the excess outfielders. I would trade Span this year if the offer was right. They will not get enough for Morneau to make moving him worthwhile.
  5. You have to sign and develop prospects. This is probably a 3- 4 year fix. Outside of Colby Lewis who could benefit from Target Field most of the pitchers mentioned will command more dollars than the Twins will spend. Baker is a good point if you can sign him to a 2 - 3 year incentive laden deal, 2 years club option for 3. I agree with the person who commented that none of the Twins trade chips will bring a front line starting pitcher or prospects. Except may be Span if a club close to the trading deadline is desperate enough. (Contender or playoff team with an outfield hole due to injury). Twins still need 2 - 3 starting pitchers, they will be expensive
  6. This has been very interesting. Most expect a total makeover by 2014. These are my guesses: C - Mauer 1B - Parmalee 2B - FA or trade SS - Dozier 3B - Plouffe or FA DH - Doumit or FA or Willingham LF - Willingham CF - Hicks RF - Arcia Bench C - Doumit or Hermansen INF - Florimon OF - Revere OF - FA or Benson SP Gibson Diamond Hendricks Bromberg FA or Walters or 2012 draft pick RP Perkins (CL) Duensing Oliveros Waltrop Guerra Gutierrez Fa or Single A Pitcher this year (there are several) I hope Morneau will still be here, but do not think the money will work List depends on how much the Twins are willing to spend on FA's. Normally has not been much, but they need a number 1 starter.
  7. Let's face this real issue. The Twins over the last few years have been drafting 20 + in the first round and the 2008-2010 era signability was a big issue. That is why the big payroll clubs got players better than their draft position. Many small market clubs were told by Scott Boras types that the best players would never sign if they had other options. (Not a college senior). Billy Smith was responsible for expanding our international presence (which seems to be turning out better that our drafting). Most of our front line prospects (at least 1 -3 ) came from this group. Key to note will be how many of these prospects are moved up the latter after the first half standing finish in all leagues. Most of the top prospects unless they have issues that need to be fixed, should be moved up a level. This will tell how close the prospect is to the major leagues and should help planning the next two years of signings.
  8. Maholm is a National league pitcher. That makes him worse than comparible stats from the American league. Twins need to find out how many of their minor league outfielders will make the grade, I have serious doubts about Benson ever being major league quality. Unless TR gets a deal he can't refuse, Willingham should be here this year and to the middle of next You have to pitch to win, but bying 3 type 3 or better SP will be expensive. Doumit will be a much better trade canidate this year as will Span.
  9. Let's look at two things. The Twins are not going to fire a coach in the regular season. I feel Bruno will be the hitting coach here next year, on merit. Gardy is too close to Anderson and this may be both if TR tries to relieve Anderson(much as TK and DIck Such) and I feel Dick Such was not as good as Anderson. Terry Ryan is not going anywhere (his bullpen patch job has been remarkable), see if he has another mircle next year with the starting staff. A coach is only as good as the talent he has. Anderson does not have a great deal of talent in this pitching staff, hitting is a different story.
  10. Remember Baker is not signed for next year and I would only sign him to a reasonable contract with a couple of option years. It takes 2 years for a pitcher to fully recover from TJ surgery, so next year could be a lost season for Scott. 2 years in the 5 - 6 million range with 2 option years should be right. It is frighting to think that #3 starters are now commanding in the $10 million per year range. Hope the Twins can find some pitching in their minor league systems better than I think it is or we will have to make some trades to get some upside prospects in this area.
  11. First: All you would owe Bobby Abreu(if he clears waviers) is the prorated major league minimum. Do not think he could help us at this time(since the Angels move seems to say not a clubhouse guy). We do not need this here for rebuilding
  12. Two observations on this game. 1. Starting pitching has to change, I don't feel the starting pitching will get much better. 2. Clutch hitting is horrible. Do not have an answer to 1, but time is coming to take some chances on the wavier wire or with some minor leagures. What choice do we have if Linarno has another bad start next week. Seems like the oposition pitcher are able to pitch differently in key situations, while the twins are not. Are their scouting books that much better than ours or twins player just that bad.
