  1. I still like Marcum as a free agent choice. Maybe look at Stephen Drew as a one or two year player who needs a chance to turn it around, Need some pitchers with stuff, not all of the soft tossers we have. Most of the Twins starters will get lit up by the better hitting clubs. Trade with Seattle or Tampa Bay will make sense if we can get some of their better prospects back.
  2. I think Arcia, Hicks, Parmalee, Manship, Escobar, Carson, maybe Vasquez as he can work out of the bullpen. I do not think Slama will be here, but it is a possibility Dozier will. Unless the Twins decide to put Casilla on the bench for September, Dozier's opportunities will be limited. I believe the Twins would like to see how Hicks and Arcia far against major league pitching. This will help with what to do with Span in the offseason.
  3. It is early in his career and the injuries could hinder him quite a bit. Will be interesting if the Twins send him back to FT. Myers or to New Britian next year. That will say how the Twins few this year. Middle infield at this time is a hole for the Twins, so his improvment could fast track him.
  4. I would try and extend Justin now if the deal can be in the 30 mil for 3 year range. If he does not like that than try and trade him this winter. The Twins will not offer arbitration after next year(he might take it). So it will be better to get something than nothing. My guess is that the Dodgers did not offer either of there 2 high end pitchers for Justin. They were looking for a salary dump and the Red Sox forced them to take Beckett and Crawford to get Gonzales(who is much better at this time than Morneau)
  5. I think it is more likely one of De Vries and Walters may be pitching here. This is along with 2 TBD(FA) pitchers. The twins need to put fans in the seats, bring this team back will not accomplish that.
  6. I was hoping the Twins would claim Lester and see if the Bosox were doing a salary dump. That being said I think Marcum would be a great pickup and pricewise might be less than Lester. Drew should be gettable and I also like Chamberlain(though I think his price would be high). Any other of the scrap pitchers would have more downside than upside. Hunter would just take up space needed for the young outfielders. Maybe Pavano if cheap enough with a spring training invite(he seems to like it here).
  7. I am guessing either Sano or Rosario or both will be in AA by June. They will also be joined by 1 or 2 of the relief pitchers that make Beliot in July/August. I would not be surprised if Rosario made New Britian to start the year. Twins need to plan ahead and see how soon some of their lower minor talent from this year will arrive. Most of Elizabethian Talent should start at Beliot, a few depending on openings will be in Fort Meyer. Bromberg should be in AAA to see if he is worth keeping over the next couple of years. Am hoping for trades or signings to put some starters with stuff at AAA and AA.
  8. More testing has seem to had results. About 10 years ago it seemed a number of balls not hit that well left the park. Also the number of players in the majors who are over 35 seems to have remarkedly decreased. That tells me the policy is working. Not to say a number of player still probably try to cheat, masking agents are getting better, and until all of there residual makeup is known, it will be hard to get all of them. Best way of finding them is remarkable preformances by playes past their prime (Colon) or way out of line preformance changes(Melky Caberra). Not to say you cannot guess at others(A-Rods injury issues the last 2 - 3 years for one).
  9. Slama is not regarded by the Twins brass as a major league pitcher. He will have to prove himself in another origanization. If he does the 'free Slama' brigade can say 'I told you so'. Until that time comes, can we drop this topic, it's a waste of time and breath.
  10. Also believe the Twins will be active in the minor league FA market and should get some takers except for outfiieders. Hate to give up on Benson already and believe that either Hicks or Arcia or maybe both will be in the major leagues. I still believe Span will be traded in the offseason to clear room for these outfielders. I do not think the Hicks or Arcia will need a lot of time in AAA. It might still be toward the end of spring training, but I think you can get more in the winter. Believe Floriman will be the starting SS next year, and if it is Dozier will still make the club. Escobar will probably be given most of the year at AAA to refine his hitting. More of Beliot may be moved to New Britian than most of us think. Maybe Mastroranni is a AAA with a platoon of Carson and Arcia in RF in Minnesota. I believe Hicks will be called up for a look, they will wait on Arcia until spring.
  11. The Dodgers had to take all of them or none of them. Lester fits the bill as a Top of Rotation starter with a reasonable contract. Good start aand much better than throwing money at most of the FA pitchers out there this year. Lester is poison in Boston because of the fried chicken and beer in the clubhouse during games that group was not pitching.
  12. Gene Glynn - he has done a great job with what he was given in AAA
  13. According to ESPN the Red Sox have put Lester and Ellsbury on trade waivers. Lester could be interesting, but do not know how many prospects the Red Sox want back. If the price is cheap enough, go for it. Would be better than spending about the same on an FA and being locked in for 3 or more years. Ellsbury is FA after next year, so do not think he would be the right player for the Twins. If the put Pedroia on trade waivers, I hope the Twins would at least inquire, do not think this will happen Buchholz is too long a contract and too dangerous to not work out for the twins to take this chance.
  14. Kudos to Diamond, but it could have been done differently. One of the Twins speedsters(Span, Revere, FLoriman, Casilla) could have dragged a bunt close to the first base line and forced Oswalt to field it. If he is tardy, he would have to throw over the runner, and if he hits the runner, now you can send everyone out of the dugout and make Texas the instigator. It would force a ton of suspensions and even staggered would impact Texas on both making the playoffs and home field advantage. It would also serve notice to the Texas players Oswalt was putting them at risk and could have caused Texas to decide whether Oswalt was worth the distraction If Oswalt gets to the line first and trys to tag out the runner, run him over, clean baseball play like running into a catcher.
  15. Span will probably be traded this offseason, Morneau is a possibility, Willingham is unlikely. The Twins are looking for pitching prospects and other team are reluctant to give them up. Buying an FA starting pitcher is a crap shoot. Most of them wind up way overpaid for what they produce. That being said I would take a run at Shawn Marcum as he has pitched in the American League before. Best way is to develop pitching, but either Tampa Bay or Seattle could have surplus and would need some of the listed Twins players. For a shortstop I would take a flyer on Stephen Drew who rates to be an FA after this year. The money would have to be right, but he could be looking at a short term make good deal after his horrible year in 2012.
  16. The Dodgers were looking a Morneau as a pickup if the Twins were dumping salary. There offer included none of the Dodgers top prospects, so TR was correct to turn it down. The deal the Dodgers did now could come back to bite them in the future, but this deal will not be evalutated for 2 - 3 years. Dodgers came out OK if Carl Crawford returns to his Tampa Bay form, otherwise this is probably a bad deal for the Dodgers, but they wanted to make the postseason.
  17. I think it's all relative. The Twins are obviously capable of producing runs, and they have a 1B waiting in the wings. What they don't have (at all) is pitching. So it's not that Morneau isn't worth signing at 3 for 7; it's just that he isn't worth signing at 3 for 7 for the Twins. His is not a position of need. Other teams might jump at that deal. That's fair I guess, and based on reports the last few hours we may have missed a one-time chance with the Dodgers. I'd be very curious to know what they were offering, but really, even if it was just taking his contract it should have been worth considering. Dodger wanted to make the playoffs and needed a productive firstbaseman. Red Sox made the deal so if the Dodgers got Gonzales, they also had to take the bad contracts of Beckett and Crawford. According to ESPN the Red Sox got Loony and 4 prosects including the Dodgers #2, and #3 according to preseason Baseball America. The Dodgers also got according to reports 12 mil. If these pitchers are good, this was a great deal for the Red Sox, removing there past mistakes and giving them money for FA this fall. This just opens another door for the twins as the Red Sox will need a firstbasemen this winter. They will also have the money to spend.
  18. Return would depend on how much salary the Red Sox pay. This could be a straight salary dump, but if real, it could include 2 of the top 4 Dodger prospects. Presume Loony would be going back, but he is a goner at the end of the year. Rest would have to be prospects(mainly pitching). Do not know why the Dodgers would do this deal, but it would close the book on the Twins doing a deal with them
  19. Waldrop may replace Burnett next year, same type of pitcher but cheaper. Burnett's numbers are telling me he is making it on smoke and mirrors this year. Could be trade bait if someone wants a cheap reliever with good numbers and does not look at the rest of his line. Locks: Perkins Burdon Fien Duensing Possibiltes Robertson Burnett Waltrop Swarzak Guerra other FA's signed this offseason Remote but possilbe Thielbar couple of other independent league signees Gone: Grey Slama Manship
  20. Slama would have been here 2 months ago if TR thought he could help the club. For whatever reason the Twins brass do not view Slama as a major league pitcher. We will have to live with it. If he does wonderful with another orgainization, then the Slama backers can say 'told you so'.
  21. If you pay 7 million to get a better prospect back when to trade Morneau then you will have 12.5 million in sunk costs next year. That is close to 15% of the payroll. Also for the forum people who are looking at this for the year, look only at the last two months of Morneau producton. He may get more than 8 - 10 million a year after next year, but if you cannot get him to sign a reasonable extention, by all means trade him. He is in late prime and not over the hill for the next two years, so a three year contract seems about right. It will cost over 12 mil to offer him arbitration at the end of next year and he might take that. That to me does not seem to be a good use of money, otherwise he walks at the end of next year and the twins get nothing in return. Market has changed, rules have changed, The players helped change the CBA to make the Tampa Bay model less attractive. Note the changes.
  22. For whatever reason Slama does not seem to be in the Twins plans. Many of these type pitchers need to be looked at the fall to see if they should even be offered contracts for next year. Guerra will be looked at in spring training when several of these pitchers(I hope) will not be here.
  23. Do not mind an optomist, though you may be excessive. May need more of a half time catcher by that point, still lacking a ace in the pitching staff. Also feel like Hendriks does not get it and maybe never will, same with Benson. Can see Mauer being more of a first baseman by this time, so that moves Arcia into DH or outfield. That may work. Also expect the one of the middle infielders will be an FA, along with one of the ptiching staff. or as said TBD. My recommendation would by Marcum and Stephen Drew, but others could fill the bill. Baseball is becoming more like business. A few high priced stars, some upper mid level and a bunch of low level on most teams. The mid - lower level will be mainly FAs the move from team to team every few years (Jamie Carroll types) read contractors.
  24. If this team loses for the next 2-4 years, getting Mauer's contract off the books wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. I hope that Mauer wants to win, that it doesn't matter if he's surrounded by a bunch of *******s he hates. Whatever your personally feeling are for a friend and co-worker, at the end of the day this is a business of wins and loses and moving on from Justin and onto Parm so this team can finally get some damn pitching in here is what's best for business. To potentially sign a guy to 30 million dollars cause it makes Joey happy is one of the worst reasons I've ever heard to sign a guy. Mauer is not KG, Morneau isn't Thud...no more friendship contracts. I would agree if Morneau was not worth the 8 - 10 mil a year. I still agree if an offer makes sense trade him. I just feel that resigning for 2 -3 years of a fair contract is not a bad thing. Only reason to not do this is is you feel that the Twins will not compete for years and then it makes sense to move Mauer also. I do not feel this is the case and do not want the Twins to become like Kansas City, Seattle, or Houston(which could happen if they adopt some of the changes a few people of this forum recommend.
