Which Twins Left-Handed Outfielder Should Go?
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This FO will never admit they're wrong, they'll double down instead. My vote is for Gallo to go 1st. Almost always he hits HRs when we don't need them and strikes out when we do. Kepler sometimes gets hits when we need them & no one plays Target's RF better them him. -
WOW! how did I make such a mistake! This is probally the biggest brain fart I've ever made! I meant '21

Great article Hans. The team that does well in the post season & wins the WS is the team where their hitters & pitchers get hot towards the end . As I've been saying the Twins have the players that can compete & advance in the PS. The biggest point is that Correa has to get hot that sparks this offense which he usually does in the 2nd half. And the rotation needs to maintain their effiency which they normally don't because of a failing BP. We could use more depth in the end of the BP (keep Pagan out of there) & try to to keep the rotation from being burnt out. If we can do this, I'm all in. '21 Braves barely made the play offs & end up winning everything. IMO we have the same path. Last year LAD had by far the best record & went home early.

Where Do the Twins Go from Here
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The place where we were at in the off season was very heavy in cOF LH bats & short in RP depth. So they signed a cOF LH bat to a big contract & failed to add a top end RP. The players we traded for last year were hot the 1st half but didn't produce the 2nd half (Fulmer wasn't too bad). That's the chance we take, who can guarantee that any hot player we may target now will produce in the 2nd half? No matter what we do, our success hinges on if Correa & Buxton can get hot down the line. The line up will vastly improve when Polanco & Lewis come back, to accompany Kiriloff & our bench players. I'd trade Gallo + somebody else to HOU for a decent RP & stand pat. Since we failed to draft any catchers, I'd trade for a decent catching prospect.- 65 replies

IMO this FO has some querks, one is thinking a washed up soft tossing lefty (like Happ) can contribute to this team. Unfortunately, Keuchel is the next one, I had 0 faith in Happ & I have 0 faith in Keuchel. Though the idea to have a "fall back" is a good one, Keuchel isn't the answer. My solution would have been bringing back Chris Archer. I hesitate to suggest this because I know the blow back I'll get from people who fall for negative hype & fail to look at underlying conditions. But when Archer came back from his injury with TB he was able to pitch 3 good innings, he was able to get it up 5 innings with the Twins (he'd have more innings if the Twins pitch calling wasn't so absolutely terrible last year, driving his pitch count so high). On his projectory he should be able to pitch 5+ quality this year. Many was hoping he could have attain that level early last year but as we experienced with Polanco, Kiriloff and Buxton that total recovery often takes longer than we expect. Plus this year we have Vazquez that has aided tremendously to our starting rotation success (much more than many would admit) through his pitch calling & Archer would greatly benefit from him.

Is Popkins Next Firing in MLB Coaches Mid-Season
Doctor Gast replied to Dave Borton's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I don't think firing Popkin will solve the problem because it's a policy problem not just a coaching problem. Until they change their policy nothing will change. -
I imagine Carrigg fit in the same category as Wyatt Langsford (was drafted by Florida as a top catcher prospect) where he was more needed in the OF because of his speed. Evaluators don't evaluate Carrigg as a catcher because he's listed as a CF. Pre season evaluation gave him high notes on his athleticism & his flexibility on defense where he could play anywhere including pitcher but noted his best position as catcher. He has all the tools (athleticism, quickness, leadership, strong arm & quick to learn) to not only stick at catcher but excel there. Because many evaluators only looked at him as a new OFer and not as a top notch catcher that decreased greatly Carrigg's stock, which made him a steal. That the Twins missed on. CO drafted him not as an OF/INF/utility but as a catcher. They got it right. Thought I throw in a clip At the end he was asked where his arm played out the best he replied catcher

The 1st 2 pick were OK worthy of their order picked, but no steals. But our # 49 pick they blew it. Keaschall, is a good hitter, has above avg. speed but not great and at 2B , he doesn't man a premium position or fill a need. IMO Cole Carrigg is a better hitter, faster runner, has a great arm, a very athletic catcher (IMO the 2nd best college catcher) a premium position, where he was drafted by CO and is a position of great need for the Twins. The Twins could have stole Carrigg because the evaluators put him as a INF/OF where he was above average instead of catcher where he could excel plus he switch hits, So I'm very disappointed with the Twins #49th pick. If they felt the need to under slot, this was not the place to do it.

Good pick, could do lot worse, hoping for a steal with the next pick.

Great article, Ted! Understanding is important in this situation. I'm hoping for a full recovery for Lopez. Unfortunately, in Andrelton Simmons case he had serious problems related to covid. When he 1st came to the Twins he was doing great until he was venomously attacked by media & fanbase and never fully recover since.

Last year, Jeremy IMO nobody would have guess the positive Twins outcome. I agree with most posters that Gonzalez would be a mistake for our 1st round pick. I'd go with Teel as a under pick instead of Gonzalez. If we don't come up with Teel, then I'd go with Cole Carrigg (C) as our comp pick. I'm not familar with the other lower pick to comment. I'd be happy if the Twins pick up Klassen but I'd be even happier if he'd stay with Gophers one more year to continue work on his control. & go higher in the next draft.

I like Dollander & Bradfield, Believe they are both underrrated & will be a steal for anyone. Both I'd pick over Gonzalez, picking him would be a big mistake. I hope they don't pick Gonzalez & doubt they'd pick a problem SP, Dollander or a light hitting, Bradfield.

Knock-Getters and Boppers: The Eternal Struggle
Doctor Gast commented on Hans Birkeland's blog entry in Hansblog
I'm familar with Eddie but not so much the others. But I think in Rosario case he's aggressive at the plate & swings at everything & often was a sucker for outside breaking ball.s But "slashers" that are more fussy with balls outside the zone are IMO less streaky. maybe it depends on how exactly we define "slasher"- 20 comments

Knock-Getters and Boppers: The Eternal Struggle
Doctor Gast commented on Hans Birkeland's blog entry in Hansblog
Great job Hans! I agree with you & most of the responses. Twins hitting phylosophy is something that I've been advocating against since '21, Stressing moonshots which is evident in the stat of winning a few blow out games & losing a ton of close ones. Hitting HRs when we don't need them & striking out when we need a hit. This philosophy needs to change. Even boppers needs to change their approach with 2 strikes (Sano is a victim of this philosophy). One thing I don't understand is your statement about slashers & knockers are streaky. IMO slashers & knockers are a lot less streaky than boppers.- 20 comments

We want players go all out like Buxton & Lewis, but many times there are consequences that comes along with that which are injuries. Lewis is a spark plug he goes 100+% before he's less than 100% physically. IMO training & coaching have played a part in that also.

I wouldn't mind any of the top 5, & I'd include Teel in that group, because I have faith he can excel at catching. Crews is by far my top pick but I won't hold my breath on the possibility of getting him. IMO the next 5 are pretty close. By the time Clark is ready we could use a good CF, although we aren't hurting at CF as we are at catching. IMO I'd take Teel over Jenkins or even Clark but I trust our scouts know better than me.
-
I'm with you Weitz about buying & selling but not too flashy. Many good teams this year had very slow starts. We have the personel that when all are in sync beginning the post we could be like the Braves did in '21. Trade Kepler and or Gallo to HOU for a good RP is a good idea & give some our young guys a chance, If we don't get a top college catcher prospect from the draft in the 1st couple of rounds, I'd trade for one.
-
Are the Twins considering using him as a RP? or just SP? IMO we could do better even in a minor league deal.

I respect your opinion & I know some have the idea that Langford could play CF. But Matt Wallner has a much stronger arm, faster and more years of development than Langford but no one has ever considered him as CF material. Yet IMO Wallner makes more sense than Langford. Langford is athletic enough to pass at LF but what I've seen, in my book, he has no business in CF.
-
Yes, I knew that & intially thought he could be a great catching prospect if he had a better arm. Overall he has slightly above average speed, average arm and not great at reading the ball, that makes him passable in LF but definitely not CF. His selling point is not his defense but his big bat which if he's available at #5 the Twins will gooble him up and I'm totally fine with that.
-
I've been following Kyle Teel since early this off season. In the 1st '23 draft prospects rankings, Teel was in reach of our comp pick. I like his projectory, he has risen well beyond our comp pick to where I'd consider him as our #5 pick. I love his progression, his tools, with his athleticism, arm, left handed bat and the way he rushes down the line to back up 1B. Old school, catchers were the ones too slow to play anywhere else. Today the top catchers will be the ones who are athelitic. Framing isn't that hard to learn & hopefully soon will be obsolete. Catching is a very valued position, Teel is the top established college catcher available, rising and great catching is a big need for us (some under value need in drafting but it should be high in the equation of selecting IMO). I would not be disappointed at all if we pick him at #5
