How Will the Twins Handle Yunior Severino in 2024?
Doctor Gast replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I love the fact that he's a switch hitter but Severino is a product of this FO, who drafts, signs, & encourages their players to hit according to this philosophy of hit a HR every AB. All of Sabato's hits at AFL were HRs (I believe). An interview with Falvey after a successful PS. He contributed the team's success to this philosophy (actually gloating), So IMO Falvey won't distance himself from this philosophy but is still embrassing it. Very unfortunately. So I don't see Severino to have a very good future with the Twins. -
Twins Pursuing First Baseman in Free Agency or Trade
Doctor Gast replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
As I stated before Miranda has no future with the Twins, we agree on that. As a business mind I'd like to raise his stock before I'd trade him. That's it. But Miranda does seems to be a streaky player & takes awhile before he gets warmed up. So if we have someone interested I'd trade him now. The Twins have been abusing Polanco a lot by over playing him while hurt not letting him heal properly through out the years. And his production shows it during these times. Last year Paparesta finally allowed him to fully heal. I know Polanco, when he's healthy & have time to vamp up & get in the groove, he rakes & hits in the clutch. He was starting to do that on a regular basis in the 2nd half. He finished the seaso healthy & will start next season healthy. That's what I'm basing my opinion on. We still need his bat & glove. The pitchers are on Larnach they know he has trouble with off speed pitches. Hopefully he can adjust but if he can't he's gone. -
Judging defense has come a long ways. Before it was based on mainly errors & your bat. It seems like overall 3B & SS have better defensive scores than 2B & 1B. Still there are intangibles that are hard to measure what makes a player great at defense.

Twins Pursuing First Baseman in Free Agency or Trade
Doctor Gast replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I advocated to trade Miranda last year because of the reason you stated with Lewis & Lee coming up at 3B, & he's not irreplaceable at 1B or needed long term. His trade value was way uo there. I'm a firm believer in selling high on a player that can be easily replaced. & advocate that even when I get a lot of blow back. But now Miranda's stock has bottomed out. This isn't the time I'd like to trade Miranda. I'd like to get his stock up to where his true worth is at. IMO Miranda's hitting will return especially against LHPs & can be serviceable at 1B. Then I'd trade him. Same with Polanco & Larnach, I have faith that Polanco will have a very good season this year & hope that Larnach will learn how to hit off-speed. -
I'm willing to move Polanco if we have someone who can come close to replace him. We don't. The shift is gone so we can no longer hide a bat w/o any range there. Julien can not replace Polanco. #2 Polanco & Kepler together won't even come close to get a SP that comes close to Gray's level. #3 Hard to find a team that'd be interested in Polanco. Teams that are rebuilding & want to unload their quality SP salary are looking for prospects or rookieish players not a year or 2 for a veteran. All other teams are looking for high end SPing not to unload. Only team that isn't is MIA & they have their 2B man. #4 Because of this year Paparesta's supervision Polanco should finally be 100%. We won't come close to get what a 100% Polanco is worth.

Twins Pursuing First Baseman in Free Agency or Trade
Doctor Gast replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Your standard for 1B is too high & your standard for 2B is too low. Yes Farmer, Julien & Miranda could be better at 1B but nothing that can't be resolved with a little playing time. Same could be said of Kiriloff. -
Twins Pursuing First Baseman in Free Agency or Trade
Doctor Gast replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
With the budgets cuts we can't splurge on non neccessities. 1B is a non neccessity. We have more than enough adequate 1B men with Kiriloff, Miranda, Farmer & Julien. Julien is a 1B man that they've tried to groom as a 2B all these years. Put Julien at 1B where he belongs in spring training & leave him there. With little competion in the Central, we can afford to have him at 1B & have him perfect the position, Better late than never -
Should the Twins be the front runner for Ohtani??

Royce Lewis Reflects On an Incredible Season
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Lewis is special & we are blessed to have him. Going through constant adversity & still keeps positive, speaks volume of his character. Which is his strength. -
Pretty extensive list Never, I like it. IMO any of them could be had & impact the Twins. My favorite is Cabrera, too. He should come pretty cheap. Here again like you said if they think that they could improve on him. Marquez's option is pretty high especially for what you're getting, so I'd pass on him. Maybe CO won't pick up his option?
-
I'm afraid I have to disagree with you Nick. Although Vazquez elevated our catching from bottom of the barrel to middle of the pack we are not very good in depth. Our catching prospects are so low it's hard to find them on the prospect list & those who are highest on that list are years away to arrive at the show. C, CF, SS, 3B & 2B is where you need the greatest quality of depth. CF maybe Martin will rise up & fill that void. I truly hope so but to solely trust on that is wreckless, especially if we don't know where we stand with Buxton. Castro can adequately cover CF & INF but I wouldn't want to depend on him to play there in any extended time. Only quality defensive INF we have are Correa, Lewis & Polanco. Maybe Farmer if he's still around. Yet where you see a need at 1B/ DH which aren't premium positions we are very deep in. Buxton (DH), Kiriloff, Julien, Miranda & Farmer (1B) if he's still around.

Always liked Washington as a coach Also wondered why the Twins didn't hired Hunter as a coach. Washington hired all his buddies.

The Best Free Agent You've Never Heard Of
Doctor Gast replied to Adam Friedman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Japanese love their baseball. Twins could easily add extra good income by selling broadcasting rights to Japan to watch Yotomoto & mechandize . Or even to Korea if they also want to sign Lee. Something to consider. -
1st I like to say that I like Jenkins very much as a player & a person. Personally I think Max Clark is a better all around better prospect that can stick at the premium position of CF & was taken before Jenkins. But this FO & many writers are enamored by power potential thus quick to label Jenkins as a super-star. Lewis & Lee are all around better players who can play a premium position, I don't see Jenkins as a true MLB CFer, so he'll end up at cOF where we have an abundance of adequate players. I also mainly prefer Lee because he's a switch hitter & I prefer Lewis not only because of his talents but also because of his fire, feel for the game & leadership which I saw from the beginning. Another thing I'm afraid of is that the Twins favor a certain mold for their hitters. Players like Lewis, Lee & Martin were able to break away from this mold & found their own way with the ability to adjust. Players like Sano, embraced their philosophy & experienced some success but once the pitchers adjust, they couldn't readjust & floundered. When I look at, Jenkins I see him as a Gallo comp. a very good cOF that has power. For Jenkins to acheive his hitting prowess it depends on how he's coached. I don't have faith that it can happen w/ the Twins.

I remember reading about Jung-Hoo Lee awhile ago. Son of a former Korean MVP SS, whose nickname was "son of the wind" . So Lee's nickname is "grandson of the wind". I had high expectations for him & thought he'd be good pick up for the Twins, IMO his father gave him his talents & instilled in him the desire to be great. There'll need to be adaptation in his swing, discipline and getting used to the culture & MLB. But I think he has the talent & the determination to do so. There's been a few success stories, I believe Lee could be one. Besides another Lee on the team might be interesting. Only question I have is the $. Hopefully he should come at a discount but still he might be too much for us? & if he wants to come here? (that's 2).

I think the most cost effective & more productive way to change our SO identity is to change our old '19 philosophy of hitting a "moon-shot" with every pitch. Yes this hitter can get lucky &hit a HR w/ nobody on base when the pitcher is not focused & makes a mistake & when it's not important. But when it's a clutch situation, facing a good pitcher that's focused, this hitter most often SO if not then pop-up or FO. That's why preLewis era our hitting w/ RISP was so low especially with the bases loaded. Normally it's hard to blame anyone because normally everyone is tight lipped. But Falvey gloated after our positive PS. Giving credit to his hitting philosophy. We made it to the PS & advanced not because of this philosophy but inspite of it. I believe we could have advanced further w/o it. So FO wake up & stop drinking your Kool-Aid..

'23 is spot on. It'd be a good year if they hadn't signed Gallo (F~) it made no sense to spend that much money on a gamble on a player that IMO was slim where there was a great glut.& that took time away from our prospects '19 was an A, with the signing of Cruz, Schoop, Cron & Perez. '20 was terrible when Donaldson didn't work out. '21 was an F from the start except the resigning of Cruz. '22 IMO was a B. I don't blame the signing of Bundy, Archer & Smith, I blame how they were managed & the negative hype that they got. That they didn't deserve which wrecked their careers.

Twins AFL Report (Week 5): Rosario Wins Home Run Derby
Doctor Gast replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Thanks Steve and congratulations to Rosario! I personally don't get excited about the HR derby (but many do). Sano got many escolades about coming in runner-up to Judge in the HR Derby in '17. Where did that get him. Cossetti is the one I most follow at AFL, it's a shame he doesn't get the opportunity & performing poorly.- 8 replies

The Yankee's were interested in Kepler last year but didn't want to give anything for him. Maybe this year, but personally I'd hate to see him go to NYY.
-
I like Kepler but Wallner is starting to establish himself as an OFer. If we get a good deal on Kepler, he could be gone. If FO is deperate he still might be gone. Although we have abundance of INFers, we don't have abundance of adequate INFers especially if Farmer & Solano are traded away. Polanco shouldn't be at 3B & Julien shouldn't play 2B. So we desparately still need Polanco to man 2B. You might get Julien get better at fielding the ball & even turn the DP but range you either have itor you don't, Julien doesn't. If FO came to that conclusion right away & play him at his natural position1B from the beginning, he would have broke camp with the team this last season & we would have enjoyed Julien presence from the beginning. Yet FO is still reluctant to play Julien at 1B, at 1B Julien is inexpendable, at 2B IMO he is very expendable.

Twins rumored to have interest in Kevin Kiermaier for CF
Doctor Gast replied to DJL44's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Keirmaier for 1 yr. is a very good option if the price is right. Twins will face much more RHPs than LHPs. His defense will always play well. Pitching for hitting is a good recipe for the Twins as long it's not a deadline trade. -
Your turn to generate Twins Trade Ideas
Doctor Gast replied to John Bonnes's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
With the TV rights uncertain, I doubt the Twins will go after any big FA. Trades make even more sense this year. IMO SPing is a neccessary need because of this off season losses, especially if Gray turns down his QO. Hitting for pitching is a good recipe.
