Nice article Sherry. agree with you on Simmons. It has been a trend with this FO to think an aging player will return to prior performance level- get one more good year. Rotation also agree, need to sign a couple of FAs with one being top of rotation quality. Cruz, I agree with his positive influence on team, but question if he can continue to perform at a high level considering his age.

Making Sense of the Edwar Colina Decision

Does not bother me, Twins definitely know more about Colina and his health than I do. But agree timing of move is strange. -
Twins Catcher May Be Marlins Perfect Catch
4twinsJA replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think you are on the right track. Don't see Twins having much success in FA market, trade is probably best way for them to acquire starting pitching. -
I subscribed to MiLB TV for the season, $40. Loved it, lower quality picture at some of the ballparks, but great to see some of the players coming up in the system. My biggest disappointment for Twins system was lack of top pitching prospects-Duran, Balazovic, progressing to MLB due to injuries and injuries to Enlow and Canterino.

Twins lacking elite potential position players at the lower levels. Some players had some good periods but lacked consistency or had injuries. Baseball America listed top 10 position players in each league in minors from low A to AAA, no mention of any Twins player. FO has been emphasizing pitching and results have been encouraging, but would like to see more top level potential in minors for position players.

Great job covering Twins MiLB this year. I was a regular reader. -
What Happens to the Twins Emerging Star?
4twinsJA replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Yes, Twins lucky Donaldson was not out with injury for extended time this year. Twins could trade him for a bucket of ball and I would not complain. I am an optimist but still can't see Twins contending next year, why take risk with Donaldson-would rather see money invested in new pitching.- 52 replies

40-man roster decisions, part 1: position players
4twinsJA commented on Squirrel's blog entry in In My Opinion
In general, 40 man roster split is 18 position players, 22 pitchers but not set in stone. 13 position players on active roster so not a lot of extra spots for others. FYI, Twins, even with all there injuries, only played 23 position players this year, Blankenhorn and Lin 1 game each, and Riddle 4 games. So only 20 that played significant time. 34 different pitchers used by Twins this year. The five extra spots usually include a third catcher, MIF, and OF that is able to play CF, and the 2 best prospects that are rule 5 eligible. I would go with Rortvedt, Palacios, Celestino, Lewis, and Miranda. Would prefer Miranda on opening day roster, but see Twins playing service time game. 13 on active roster-Garver, Jeffers, Sano, Polanco, FA SS, Donaldson, Arraez, Kirilloff, Kepler, Buxton, Larnach, Gordon, Refsynder. -
Pineda's return for 2022? What is his contract like?
4twinsJA commented on Brandon's blog entry in Blog Brandon
I am a big Mike fan. It is a little worrisome all the minor injuries this year and I am like worried about how much weight he is carrying. But would be in favor of signing him to a two year contract with the second year being a team option. -
Twins ending season with rotation of Pineda, Ryan, Gant, Jax, and Barnes. Can't say the pitchers on this list are blocked from advancing due to loaded rotation at MLB. Hope some of them get a chance next year.

Did the Twins Fleece Tampa Twice?
4twinsJA commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Fleece, probably not, Rays realize they need to give up something to get something. Cruz is a great fit for Rays, fills a big need for them. They gave up Ryan, who looks for be possible mid to back of rotation starter and Strotman, who has not done much at St. Paul and was taking a roster spot for Rays and now Twins. And probably the biggest factor, Rays have plenty of pitching in the minors-could afford to give up someone.- 9 comments

Can The Twins Fill a Rotation for 2022?
4twinsJA commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Going to be tough, before Maeda went down was thinking one FA starter, Maeda, Ober, Ryan Dobnak, with Jax and Barnes as 7,8 type starter. #6 Winder with first opportunity after opening day. I think Twins should be done with Smeltzer and Thorpe. I like Duran in relief for a year. Strotman has not had much success at St. Paul yet. Balazovic and other prospects need to start in minors. With Maeda potentially out next year, will likely need to sign another FA starter. Would like to see an 1-2# FA and a middle of rotation starter FA. Besides extending Buxton, spend all money on pitching in offseason, will need a couple of relievers as well.- 18 comments

Completely agree, win-win for Duran and Twins. Duran get to pitch at MLB level and Twins get relief help. If all goes as planned next year, stretch him out the next year.

Why Get a Second Opinion For an Elbow Injury?
4twinsJA replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What procedure did Rich Hill have? It seems to have worked and was not off as long as TJ surgery. -
This seems to be a popular opinion with many on TD including me. Looking for Buxton to bump Cave off roster, let Celestino continue his success at AAA and gain confidence. Lets seen some of the relievers-Hamilton, Moran. Ryan may need another start or 2 at AAA, but get him up after that. What does Miranda have left to prove at AAA.
-
I really like Ober, not that he is a future CY Young candidate or even top of the rotation pitcher, but a solid starting pitcher for Twins. Ober's case is a good argument against needing X amount of time or innings at each level before someone can advance.

Miranda Mania: 3 Ways To Get Him To Minneapolis
4twinsJA replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Immediate gratification is what many want. It is an ugly look. Miranda's OPS at AAA is not really any different than Rooker's, Celestino's or Cave's at AAA this year. I have not heard one bit of reasoning why one should expect anything out of Miranda when others with the same OPS this year have failed miserably on the MLB level this year How about higher BA for Miranda, low K rate. Basically same stats when went up level, AA to AAA. I am sure there is more. OPS is not the ultimate stat to predict success. Rooker is a completely different batter, very power centered-all or nothing, Celestino should not had been at MLB level was not ready, Cave had his time and has regresssed. What I like about Miranda is not found in stat sheet, he seems to raise the performance of others on the team. Saints bats took off when Miranda arrived. -
Twins 40-Man Roster Crunch? Perhaps Not
4twinsJA replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am in agreement with chpetti19, except would only sign FA SS, FA SP, and 2 FA RP leaving a spot for Rooker and Severino. FA SP will need to be at least midrotation quality, have plenty of end of rotation options-no Happ/Shoemaker/Bailey types.- 63 replies

2022 team is mostly set up at this point
4twinsJA commented on Brandon's blog entry in Brandon's Blog
There will be plenty of difficult 40 man roster decisions to make in offseason, I am sure Twins will sign some FAs in offseason. But each one signed will mean another spot less for someone else. Regarding starting pitching, Ober, Jax, Barnes, Dobnak have all shown some success, with Winder, Ryan, Balazovic, Duran, Sands, and others that will have to be on 40 man. Do Twins use a couple of roster spots on middling veteran starters like Happ, Shoemacher and risk losing someone to rule 5 draft or go with younger pitchers? -
Twins Options at Shortstop in 2022
4twinsJA replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Twins need to get their best players on the field next year. Miranda has not played at MLB level yet, but looks to be ready-maybe he gets some time in September. Do Twins sign FA SS or inhouse option? I really like Polanco at 2B, but may need to move back to SS to give Miranda a position, Arraez stays at utility IF/DH spot (no more OF time) need his bat in lineup. Can't see any of top SS FAs going to Twins, why sign another stopgap guy and use a spot on roster when need to get Miranda an opportunity. Palacios may not be the answer but could replace Riddle as AAA emergency Twins backup. I am not a Gordon believer, was hot for a short time when first called up but utility player at best. -
Excited about Twins prospects, maybe put Duran in bullpen for a year to get his arm healthy.;

Ace is setting the bar pretty high. I would think most would be happy with a solid #2 or #3 pitcher. Hope Ryan gets an opportunity with Twins this year yet and is part of rotation next year. I could see rotation next year of Meada, Pineda or other FA, Ryan, Winder, and Ober, with Dobnak, Jax, Barnes as backups, Balazovic, Duran, Strotmen, Sands, Vallimont pushing for a spot. Please no more Shoemaker, Happ, Bailey types.

In Defense of the Twins Front Office
4twinsJA replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
FO can take criticism, part of the job, nobody bats 1.000. Part of problem with FAs is top candidates don't want to come to Minnesota. Also, as someone pointed out earlier in posts, last year most of others considered really have not done well this year. For Twins to have an ace pitcher, they will probably have to develop one. If it was easy, every team would have an ace. I am waiting for this next wave of pitching prospects to arrive before making any judgements. I am as impatient as anyone, wanting to win this year. Twins are taking their time with prospects, thinking more long term.
