  1. There is a lot to like in Povich, look for good things from him. Yes, draft very important for Twins, especially pitching. Twins have had difficult time signing top FA pitchers, need to develop them.
  2. Non of the relievers are even on pace to pitch 80 innings this year. I would think a MLB reliever should be able to pitch one inning every other game. I don't think they are over worked, some are just not effective.
  3. Twins still need to acquire a solid set up man, 2nd closer type. Keep Pagan for medium leverage situations.
  4. My eight on the present roster are; Duran as primary closer, like Theilbar and Moran as LH options, Jax and Pagan in medium leverage positions, Duffey and Megill in low leverage opportunities, Winder as long relief. That leaves Minaya, Smith, Cano, Cotton, and Coulombe on the outside looking in. Really need a solid set up man, second closer type, hoping for at least one addition before trade deadline.
  5. Bullpen troubles were somewhat predictable this year with the limited FA additions this year and trading best reliever. I see a couple of trends; Twins too confident can piece together a bullpen with roster castoffs and low priced FAs- thinking they can make a few adjustments and poor performing pitcher will become effective again. Injuries and limited success of pitchers coming up- Alcala's injury really hurts, sure he was in plans to share high leverage innings with Duran/Pagan. Not enough of the pitchers expected to come up from minors and contribute this year have not been able to do that on a consistent basis.
  6. It seemed to me Rocco was a little more aggressive with base stealing to open the season, but Twins were not very successful. So, Twins have been more conservative since. For the Twins sake hope league does not go to more base stealing, Twins have not been very good at throwing out runners.
  7. Palacios was suppose to be emergency SS at AAA, this year. If Correa moves on and Twins promote Palacios to fulltime SS for Twins, there is very little depth behind him. Steer played some SS at AA this year, not much at that level. Javier at A+ and 19 year old Miller at A. Will definitely need some additions, whether it is SS for Twins or depth at AAA and AA.
  8. Don't see where Sano fits with Twins anymore. Hope Pagan can improve, but I am not very optimistic. Kirilloff seems to back on track at AAA.
  9. Twins shuffled batting coaches around in the system this year, seems to be working. There are plenty of bats to be excited about in the Twins system. Sabato even hit .300+ the past 2 weeks.
  10. Twins owe Duffey $3.8M this year. Twins don't have a history of eating contracts of poorly performing players. They generally keep them on the roster. My vote is an IL stint, then release if not improved.
  11. I have read and listened to arguments against getting vaccinated. They only argument that has any validity is "You are not going to tell me what to do, it is my choice." Excited to see how Hamilton does, wondered why he did not get the call last year.
  12. A lot of good arms in system, always skeptical about pitching numbers in low A- pitchers parks. But don't know what else Swain could do to move up. Hope to see some shuffling of rosters in minors in the next couple of weeks.
  13. Given Archer's statcast numbers, why would Twins want to push him to go longer in games. Seems to be able to keep batter off balance enough to labor through 4 innings but anymore would surely lead to trouble. Smeltzer has been an unexpected surprise, for me anyway. When Gray, Ryan back, Archer may be odd one out. I am not a Bundy fan either, but he has been more effective than Archer. Could see rotation of Gray, Ryan, Ober, Bundy, and Smeltzer with Winder in long relief.
  14. Twins have some exciting prospects, hope a few of them get get moved up a level soon.
  15. I really like Celestino, the 4th OF that bats RH and can play all 3 OF positions, that the Twins have been needing. Celestino appears ready to be a contributor at the MLB level. Should be plenty of playing time, rest days for Buxton, platoon against LH pitching, and covering injuries.
  16. Seth did nice interview with Festa last year. What I liked was he did not start pitching until senior year of HS, limited mileage on his arm. He was not a kid that been pitching since Little League and been overused at a young age. Nice Twins are being relatively aggressive with moving him up.
  17. I am a fan of the pitch clock. But, I think 14 and 18 seconds may be a little fast. Maybe start at league average, focus on the worse offenders first. MLB could start with 18 sec. without baserunners and 24 sec. with baserunners. Then maybe progress down if things are going well.
  18. Great article, I really hate the complete tear down of teams. Seems the Pirates have been in complete rebuild the past 10 years.
  19. Looks like a win-win for both Twins and Yankees, both teams leading their divisions. Donaldson seems to be a better fit in NY.
  20. I am a Smeltzer fan, great story. In past, seems he had hard time getting past 4 innings. Why not piggy back him with Winder, each pitch 4 innings, let someone come in to close. Winder on innings limit anyway this year (4 IP every fifth game would be 120 IP), bullpen would get day off except for closer.
  21. Regarding the DH numbers, being a DH is harder than you would think. Harder to stay mentally in games, get out of regular routine of moving in/out of dugout, keeping loose in preparation to hit. Cruz had it down pat, but DH was his fulltime role. I would not be surprised to see significantly lower batting stats when regular position players DH.
  22. I like Lewis as much as anybody, but given his limited playing time the last 2 years, he needs to play everyday. When Correa comes back, Lewis likely back to AAA. Arraez's fielding seems to have regressessed this year, can hide that somewhat at 1B, but he should not whiff at groudballs within his limited range. There was a play this weekend where Miranda had the wrong foot on 1B and could not stretch very far for a throw from Sanchez, was reviewed and still got the out. But if Miranda had played correctly, there would have been no question. Hate to see playing inexperienced 1B come back to bite the Twins at a key moment. Hopefully somehow Kirilloff's wrist cooperates and he comes back up to play 1B and Arraez back to primary DH. Kirilloff seems to be best defensive 1B Twins have.
  23. Really like Headrick, been able to watch a few of his games, he has been overpowering at CR. Will be interesting how Twins handle midseason promotions, would think Headrick would be on that list. Twins midseason prospect list will definitely have some changes with so many no longer qualifying and some definite risers and fallers.
  24. Why is being called a 4th OF a bad thing. Maybe he could be called a platoon player, starting against LH pitchers. Will probably get at least 2 starts a week in CF, rest day and DH day for Buxton. Then there is always injuries, may be a short term starter. Late inning defensive replacement or pinch runner, should be plenty of playing time for Celestino.
  25. Thanks Seth, great write up. There are plenty of prospects to be excited about in Twins system. Steer has really progressed this year. Will be interesting how Twins handle mid-season promotions.
