  1. A lot of good arms in system, always skeptical about pitching numbers in low A- pitchers parks. But don't know what else Swain could do to move up. Hope to see some shuffling of rosters in minors in the next couple of weeks.
  2. Given Archer's statcast numbers, why would Twins want to push him to go longer in games. Seems to be able to keep batter off balance enough to labor through 4 innings but anymore would surely lead to trouble. Smeltzer has been an unexpected surprise, for me anyway. When Gray, Ryan back, Archer may be odd one out. I am not a Bundy fan either, but he has been more effective than Archer. Could see rotation of Gray, Ryan, Ober, Bundy, and Smeltzer with Winder in long relief.
  3. Twins have some exciting prospects, hope a few of them get get moved up a level soon.
  4. I really like Celestino, the 4th OF that bats RH and can play all 3 OF positions, that the Twins have been needing. Celestino appears ready to be a contributor at the MLB level. Should be plenty of playing time, rest days for Buxton, platoon against LH pitching, and covering injuries.
  5. Seth did nice interview with Festa last year. What I liked was he did not start pitching until senior year of HS, limited mileage on his arm. He was not a kid that been pitching since Little League and been overused at a young age. Nice Twins are being relatively aggressive with moving him up.
  6. I am a fan of the pitch clock. But, I think 14 and 18 seconds may be a little fast. Maybe start at league average, focus on the worse offenders first. MLB could start with 18 sec. without baserunners and 24 sec. with baserunners. Then maybe progress down if things are going well.
  7. Great article, I really hate the complete tear down of teams. Seems the Pirates have been in complete rebuild the past 10 years.
  8. Looks like a win-win for both Twins and Yankees, both teams leading their divisions. Donaldson seems to be a better fit in NY.
  9. I am a Smeltzer fan, great story. In past, seems he had hard time getting past 4 innings. Why not piggy back him with Winder, each pitch 4 innings, let someone come in to close. Winder on innings limit anyway this year (4 IP every fifth game would be 120 IP), bullpen would get day off except for closer.
  10. Regarding the DH numbers, being a DH is harder than you would think. Harder to stay mentally in games, get out of regular routine of moving in/out of dugout, keeping loose in preparation to hit. Cruz had it down pat, but DH was his fulltime role. I would not be surprised to see significantly lower batting stats when regular position players DH.
  11. I like Lewis as much as anybody, but given his limited playing time the last 2 years, he needs to play everyday. When Correa comes back, Lewis likely back to AAA. Arraez's fielding seems to have regressessed this year, can hide that somewhat at 1B, but he should not whiff at groudballs within his limited range. There was a play this weekend where Miranda had the wrong foot on 1B and could not stretch very far for a throw from Sanchez, was reviewed and still got the out. But if Miranda had played correctly, there would have been no question. Hate to see playing inexperienced 1B come back to bite the Twins at a key moment. Hopefully somehow Kirilloff's wrist cooperates and he comes back up to play 1B and Arraez back to primary DH. Kirilloff seems to be best defensive 1B Twins have.
  12. Really like Headrick, been able to watch a few of his games, he has been overpowering at CR. Will be interesting how Twins handle midseason promotions, would think Headrick would be on that list. Twins midseason prospect list will definitely have some changes with so many no longer qualifying and some definite risers and fallers.
  13. Why is being called a 4th OF a bad thing. Maybe he could be called a platoon player, starting against LH pitchers. Will probably get at least 2 starts a week in CF, rest day and DH day for Buxton. Then there is always injuries, may be a short term starter. Late inning defensive replacement or pinch runner, should be plenty of playing time for Celestino.
  14. Thanks Seth, great write up. There are plenty of prospects to be excited about in Twins system. Steer has really progressed this year. Will be interesting how Twins handle mid-season promotions.
  15. Like Gordon's versatility, can play any position but 1B and C, maybe he can work at that. He can hold his own at the plate, good speed, late inning pinch runner. According to Baseball Reference does not get arbitration until 2025 so Twins have him under their control for another 5 years after this year. Don't know if Gordon ever progresses to point he is a fulltime starter, but definitely has good value for Twins as utility player.
  16. Nice job Matt, I am not much of a Coulombe fan. I would put him #7 in the 8 man BP. His margin for error is just too small. Has been getting it done by keeping batters off balance but don't see that as being sustainable in the long term.
  17. Bundy was signed to give time for Winder to be ready for MLB. Winder is ready and pitching well, Paddack has looked good as well. Archer seems to have higher upside than Bundy as well. Bundy does not fit in BP. Maybe a couple more starts.
  18. Not overly worried, one thing I have noticed, Martin is not very big. May not have alot of power potential, he needs to be who he is- high BA, high OBP guy and not worry so much about power. Don't like pointing the bat towards infield when hitting, needs to simplify swing.
  19. Luck may not be the correct word to use. Yes, teams use all sorts of analytics, injury history, age of pitcher to help predict future success. But even with that, maybe a pitcher is deemed twice as likely to succeed than fail, that just means of 3 pitchers that fit that profile 2 will succeed and 1 will fail, will a team be have enough luck to pick one of the 2 that will succeed or be unlucky and pick the one that fails. That is an over simplification of the process, but my point is that there is no way to be 100% accurate, best hope is to put the odds in your favor, always a chance of being unlucky.
  20. I think there is some degree of luck when it comes to acquiring experienced pitchers hoping for a rebound. Last year it did not work out, this year-so far, has been good. I look at Bundy and Archer as short term help, I mean 2-3 month place holders until Winder, Paddack and/or someone else is ready. If Twins get a full year of effective pitching from either Bundy or Archer is somewhat unexpected. Looks like rotation could be Gray, Ryan, Ober, Paddack, and Winder, but still need 1-2 possibly 3 more SPs to handle injuries. Should be plenty of innings for all 7 of these SPs over the year.
  21. Great for Sands to get callup and get first game jitters out of the way. Game played out perfectly for him to get opportunity. Sure he will get another chance this year, hopefully got some of the nerves out of the way.
  22. I agree Kirilloff long term answer at !B, but would like to see him spend a month or so at St. Paul to get healthy and get some confidence back. I don't see a need to rush him back.
  23. Miranda off to slow start this year, but what else could he have done last year, at least hitting wise. Would have liked to have seen Miranda get a week or two with Twins last year, but did not happen. Hope Twins bring him up soon even if just for a week or two. Maybe he comes up and makes it hard to send him back down.
  24. Paddack, Ryan, and Ober look like a great core to build on for the rotation for the next few years. Winder looks ready, with others on the way. Does not look like Twins will need to look at cast offs for rotation for next couple of years.
  25. Being off 40 man roster is a big hurdle for Smeltzer, but he should get an opportunity at some point this summer. I really like the pitch clock, good for the game, will probably be difficult for some experienced pitchers to adjust but they will have to and batter also- get in the box and be ready.
