  • Twins 2, Rays 4: Lack of Offense Again, Twins Lose Fifth Straight

    Sherry Cerny

The Twins had a frustrating series against the Rays. They went against one of the best teams in baseball, the team with the best record and were swept. They fall below .500 for the first time this season. Bailey Ober was solid. The bullpen did a nice job. The offense hit several balls over 100 mph, but the Twins found another way to lose.

Another Rough Start for the Club
The Twins third and final game of the series against the Rays, started about as well as expected. Chirinos served up very hittable pitches and they were all hit hard. So hard that a hit off Jorge Polanco's bat and deflected off of the glove of Yonny Chirinos, hit the umpire and still managed to get out on a fielder's choice. While the umpires and pitchers were being checked on, so was Polanco, who was seen attempting to run off a limp, but was ultimately pulled from the game and pinch run by Donovan Solano.

Polanco being injured and missing the remainder of the game is almost the icing on the cake for a difficult series.  Polanco was just reinstated on June 1st after being on the IL since May 20th with a left hamstring injury, and left the game today for the same issue.

Polanco has spent a considerable time on the IL last season and this season and the frustration is palpable for not only fans, but Polanco as well. Polanco is one of the anchors and reliable players on the field and in the batter's box. Even with injuries, Polanco is still hitting .252 and has 16 RBI on the season. Not the best, but certainly one of the most reliable players and his absence certainly affects the team.

    Ober and Out
Bailey Ober continues to be impressive on the mound. Ober was able to get the Rays to swing at the hard-high fast balls and everything in between. He had six straight strikeouts in the second and third inning and worked through the Rays batting order by the end of the third.

Ober was late to come out at the beginning of the fourth inning, according to Tampa’s broadcast, he was asked to wash his hands. After the wash, so was Ober’s fourth inning. Ober retired two and then gave up a walk to Randy Arozarena followed by a game-tying triple and then a home run by Harold Ramirez, giving the Rays a 3-1 lead.

Ober came back out for the fifth inning, back to his usual 1-2-3, but leaving the mound, the frustration on his face could be seen as he slightly shook his head and pursed his lips.  Ober had one more chance in the sixth to face Arozarena after the frustration of the fourth inning, but only got one good strike on him in a 3-0 count and walked him for a second time. Rocco Baldelli came to remove                      Ober, who threw down the rosin bag and left undoubtedly frustrated.

Griffin Jax came in to replace a frustrated Ober. Before Jax could even begin his appearance, he took notice of his surroundings and with two on and one out, Jax noticed Wander Franco attempting to steal third. The Rays are extremely aggressive base running and they take every chance they can to steal and score. Jax stepped back to check Franco, but threw an errant ball and Franco scored pushing the Rays up 4-1. A frustrating start for Jax, but he struck out the next two batters to finish the inning.

    Clutch Correa
The Twins didn’t play bad baseball, but the offense wasn't aggressive coming out of the gate, which was really unfortunate. Tampa Bay’s pitcher Chirino was serving up every opportunity for the Twins to capitalize and manufacture runs from the first inning. The offense was connecting with the ball, but were trying to hit the ball hard, not with energy to exploit Chirino’s flat pitching in the first three innings.

Carlos Correa was hitting clean-up today and changed the tone of the game when he stepped into the box. Correa has had a long slump this season with lots of strikeouts, but that hasn’t changed who he is as a person and player. His confidence is second-to-none and it showed as he rocketed a solo-home run deep into left field with his first at-bat of the game, getting the Twins on the board first for the first time this series.

The sixth inning gave the Twins a chance to catch up, with Alex Kirilloff leading the charge with a double looking to get more runs on the board before the Rays retired Chirino to bring in Jake Diekman, who stopped the Twins from getting on the board.

Michael A. Taylor had been trying all game for that “hit” and it finally came in the seventh inning off of pitcher Colin Poche, to close the gap up 4-2.

The Twins couldn't come back in the ninth, even with the power-hitters in the line-up, ending with being swept for the first time this season.

    What’s Next?
The Twins head due north for a series with Toronto starting Friday night.
Friday 7:07 pm: RHP Sonny Gray (4-1, 2.15) vs. Yusei Kikuchi (6-2, 4.40)
Saturday 3:07 pm: RHP Joe Ryan (7-3, 2.76) vs. Bowden Francis (0-0, 0.00)
Sunday 1:37 pm: RHP Louie Varland (3-2, 4.40) vs. Kevin Gausman (5-3, 2.63)

Part of me wishes this team were in a better division so there wasn’t an out for those running this thing.  They’re terrible, but they’ll still probably win the division.  All the “ball guys” will heap praise on the FO for “winning.”

This thing needs a bottom-out and good house cleaning.  It’s a dead end road that’s we’re on.  I’m done with it.  Same thing every year.

Don't we have anyone at AAA who can hit? Whatever happened to Miranda? He can't be any worse than these guys. We weren't terrible today but even when we try to build a run, we fail as Correa pops out. Teams go through that and it is a long season and we are VERY lucky to be in the AL Central. To me though, the biggest problem is we keep having guys getting hurt and maybe also playing hurt. That will kill an offense. We've proven that we can hold the best teams down (at least now) but we are even more feeble than Cleveland right now. Let's get some hitters up from AAA who can hit. Trades? What do we have that can bring something in return? I don't see anything and we can't break up the rotation or the bullpen.

On the game thread I noticed only 80 something replies ....

Either there is nobody watching or listening   ...

If the twins would string together some hits and runs the replies would be hooray hurrah  , twins are hot today  , this is an exciting game  , even as boring as the twins play  if you can't break a 100 replies there definitely something wrong with the style of twins baseball  ...

Yes it was an afternoon game but there still should be over a hundred replies  ,  I was listening  and working on the outside of the house on a beautiful day ...

It would have been great to get a win ...

THE PAIN  , THE PAIN  , THE PAIN  , it just won't go away and I don't think it's funny that  the fans aren't smiling , now 2021 was funny  , cause you could predict the outcome when Colome came in , or the extra innings losses with the new manfred man  starting at second base ....

By the way did Colome get a contract this year with any team ???

Bremer today: “Kyle Garlick has stepped into the on deck circle.  Apparently he will be hitting for Kepler.”  Hahahahaha.

For the foreseeable future, 'hitting' should be replaced by 'swinging' when describing a Minnesota Twins batter.

Using the above as an example: "Apparently he will be swinging for Kepler"

See... doesn't that seem like a more accurate representation?

I encourage all TD writers to adopt this vernacular going forward 😀

I don't think they have a snowball's chance in a very hot place of winning the division. Cleveland will figure it out, just like last year. Chicago might even right the ship for 2nd place. The Twins have nothing in the tank.

Pitching can keep a sinking ship afloat long enough to allow the offense to mend their ways. It can happen. The one truism in baseball is that it is a long season and adjustments can occur as well as regression to a norm.

I agree with this. Let’s hope it happens.  However, the overall makeup of the offensive talent on this team has been suspect from the beginning.   What we are seeing may actually be closer to the norm than we hope. After all, other than Correa, Buxton and Vasquez - who are all way underperforming, the other vet players are kind of proving out to be who we all thought they were.

Ultimately, the offense of this team will likely go as far as Correa and Buxton will carry them.  There just isn’t anyone else who at this point can carry this team over an extended period of time, if at all. And it’s asking too much of this lineup that, absent our two expensive “stars”, the rest of them can ham and egg it among themselves consistently enough to be a true contender.

And stop using the term "slashing" when it comes to posting batting stats.  😉

This team has not made any adjustments to swinging since 2020 ...

They think they are all homerun hitters and swing for the fences when a single is all that is needed  to score a run ( a Texas leaguer  they use to call them bloopers ) ...

No adjustments since the juiced ball ...

We have been complaining about the same offensive issues the past several years and nothing fundamentally changes.  I think as long as we have this regime nothing will change.   I would be curious to see if there would be any difference in performance if for say Bruce Bochy was manager and running the philosophy.   Watching Tampa Bay play this past series was a pleasure - they seem to be able to maximize their opportunities and we are inefficient.  We do not do the little things correctly and that makes a big difference.    Pitching has been real nice this year but addressing some hitting topics:

I think the verdict is in - the shift did not take hits away from Kepler. He is batting no better than the last couple of years

Byron Buxton body is like a 70 yr old not a 30 something year old.  Unless he is the amazing benjamin button probably not going to get any healthier.   Can't even last as a DH only - sad to say.

Change in training staff has not curtailed injuries - we still have a revolving door of injured players.   Polanco hurts hamstring  - comes back - aggravates hamstring again.  Are we doing stretching and yoga?   I don't think the injuries are coming from practicing fundamentals maybe from swinging hard and missing so much.

I don't think this aggressive pinch-hitting approach this year is working - we end up running out of roster when facing the closer of the other team.  Maybe makes no difference because no one is hitting.    We are not taking that approach on relief pitching - we are not dropping Duran in the 6th inning to bail out of a jam.

Colome blew a save on May 2nd, and took an L on May 4th against the offensive juggernaut known as the MN Twins! He then pitched an inning each on May 6th and 7th against the Reds before being demoted back to the minors for the White Sox.

The T'ins have returned.  Not enough wins to qualify for a W.  Sub .500 play =T'ins.

But we did outhit the Rays yesterday. And they struck out more than us.  Could we outscore them and somehow still manage to lose?

And Polanco hurt again. It's time to find someone else to call the "heart and soul" of the team.

You can't make the club in the tub.

Thanks , I was out of town that weekend  so I missed it entirely  ...

Crazy he is even wanted by any team , even if it is a minor league contract  ...
