Not necessarily. Just a trend with advanced metrics that using all 3 strikes to hit a HR is better than trying to get on base or move a runner over. NBA has a similar issue that the 3pt shot is metrically more efficient.

Kaelen Culpepper seems too content to take a first-pitch strike. Nola threw him an 85 mph fastball middle-middle and he let it by him. Sometimes the first pitch is going to be the best one you will get in the at-bat.
