big dog Verified Member Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 MLBTR caught both of these nuggets but did not draw the obvious correlation that the Royals were possibly scouting Brian Dozier. [/quote Well, Dozier's bat would fit in pretty well with the rest of the Royals' lineup.
jorgenswest Verified Member Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I, just like everyone in this discussion, have made some underlying assumptions based on how I perceive the future playing out. For me I don't see the Twins being competitive in 2014 (another 90 loss season), 2015 I think they'll be around .500 and in 2016 we potentially start our window of contention. Of course this all assumes that the prospects pan out. It is entirely possible that we become the Royals and have to restart the rebuild 4 years from now. As such I don't believe Perkins is as valuable an asset as an everyday player or starting pitcher. Since he is likely to decline in production and his contract will only lose value moving forward I see no reason to keep him. I would trade him for the best offer I could find. I would probably also not limit the return to just pitchers, though it would be preferable. Every prospect added increases the probability of the Twins returning to contention in the future. Reasonable assessment. I think I agree, although Ryan will be blasted for not getting a top starting pitching prospect. They can probably get a prospect a little higher up in the ranks if it is a corner player and not a shortstop or starting pitcher.
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2013 Author Posted July 31, 2013 Looks like a three team deal: Peavy and Brayan Villareal to BostonWhite Sox get Avasail GarciaDetroit gets Jose Iglesias Damn, would've loved to get Iglesias for a price like that if it's true.

I mean it would need to be a decent return for Dozier but would be great for the Royals.

TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2013 Author Posted July 31, 2013 Ouch. I'm sure there will be more names, but damn....Iglesias would've made my year.
B Richard Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 I'm sure there will be more names, but damn....Iglesias would've made my year. Mine too. I wasn't banking on getting him or anything, but I have to admit reading your post was a bit of a punch in the stomach. Like seeing the girl you had a crush on talk to another guy. Who happened to be in your division. And was really good to begin with.
drjim Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Boston probably sold Iglesias at the perfect time. Don't think he hits all that much going forward, but dude can pick it.
old nurse Verified Member Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Iglesias will be available over the winter, for a potential backup outfielder. What was Chicago thinking? Peavey's not worth the money?

Looks like SS Rondon, P Wendelken, and P Moras to Chicago. Only Garcia was a notable prospect from what I read.
kab21 Verified Member Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Iglesias has a nice glove but he sucks at hitting. I think he will hit more like his 900 PA's in AAA than his 200+ PA's in the majors. What was Chi doing here? Giving Peavy away for some MiLB scraps.

This is a pile of crap they got for the most part. Now that the deal is all the way out there, it looks like the price on Iglesias (Garcia and Villareal) would've been tough to chew on. In any case, when you compare what the Sox got for Peavy to what the Cubs got for Garza - the Sox fans should be very disappointed.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 My sentiments exactly. Don't see why the Sox would make this move other than to save some payroll. Guess they are in fire-sale mode. They are my pick to have the number 1 pick in the draft.
PseudoSABR Verified Member Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Sounding more and more like we won't make a deal until August. Maybe Morneau, Pelfry, etc. can build actual value over the next month.

jay Provisional Member Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 The current offer from the Padres for Ian Kennedy is said to be Thatcher, Stites, and another MiLBer. Roughly equate that to Duensing, Tonkin, and xxx. I'd make that deal in less than 1 second.

So, the equivalent to early third rounder pick. I would still probably make that deal as well.
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2013 Author Posted July 31, 2013 Sounds like the Kennedy move is a done deal. That's a missed opportunity that is tough to see go by.
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 There are still 90 minutes left before the deadline, but it doesn't look like the Twins will move anyone.IMO, it is unacceptable to have 3 consecutive 90+ loss seasons, without selling a single asset at the trade deadline. Historically that is supposed to be a no brainer decision on 7/31 of lost seasons.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 That's unfortunate. Thatcher is more attractive than Duensing, but still, the Twins could have blown away that offer an not lost any sleep. I sure hope there are some medical issues not made aware to rubes like us. Ok, that sounded cynical, I just hope the Twins didn't miss out on another one of AZ's Crazy Dayz sales.

This team cannot get the vets to play well leading up to the deadline over the last several years. I mean, if we don't care if these guys are on the team, why would a contender want them?

Willingham was the obvious asset to move last year. His value was never going to be higher.Perkins is the obvious asset this year. On Morneau, I've heard that the O's offered a couple of C level lottery tickets if we ate his entire salary, but Ryan declined to do so. This just proves how unbelievably cheap Terry Ryan is. The team is already $30 million under the supposed approved payroll, I don't understand what difference it makes to us if we eat the salary or not?

Thatcher and Duensing are both lefties and Arb2 guys making about the same amount of money, but your statements are true. ARI presumably wanted a lefty (which rules out Burton and Fien), so SDG was probably a better match. Bummer. I haven't supported trading Perkins, but I wouldn't have ruled it out for a guy like Kennedy, especially if we could get another SP prospect in the deal.

Perhaps we didnt have a superior LH bullpen option than Thatcher, but one would think the small difference in value between Duensing and Thatcher could have been more than made up for by offering a better prospect.

I'm assuming they were looking for the best LHRP they could get their hands on. Their in a "win now" mode. I don't think Duensing would have been good enough. Just my opinion.

A middle reliever at best is only going to give you 1 to 1.5 wins over the course of a season. Even if they think Joe Thatcher is significantly better than Duensing (personally I think they are pretty even, in fact I'd argue Duensing is better), you are still talking about a difference that is statistically unlikely to even impact your W/L record by an entire win from now until the end of the season. If the D'backs would really turn down a better prospect at the possibility that Thatcher might be a fraction of a win better than Duensing, then I guess you can't do anything about that then shrug, and move on. I'd be surprised if that is the case though.

I get that we all want to see a trade that will help us in the future, but we need to be semi-realistic. We have a lot of junk on this team, and teams in the race are not chomping at the bit for our guys.
