    This is exactly why I take issue with the Twins investing so many high draft picks in college relievers during the 2012 draft. It's not uncommon for failed starters to experience success in the bullpen with velo improvements etc.-- why do we need to draft guys whose ceiling is inherently limited?

    Sano is an amazing talent with a bright future, but he is also a genuinely good guy. Last summer I sat next to the home dugout with a buddy in New Britain and got a chance to exchange some friendly words with Miguel in the on deck circle. Throughout the game he was very involved with the other players, always talking and smiling. Make no mistake about it though, he takes the game very seriously. He was kind enough to stay after and sign some autographs. I can't think of anyone I want to see succeed more than Bocaton

    ...that would probably make him a bad LOOGY... (Oliveros, that is). No idea why I always thought he was a lefty. Darnell does seem like a solid candidate

    Of note re: Duensing is the presence of Lester Oliveros. As I recall his MLB debut (7 games I think) was less than spectacular, but he has shown good progression coming back from TJ and could be a LOOGY

    This is a pretty crude way of looking at it, far too many variables in play to sum it like this.

    Ah, do I? It seems as though heavily investing in data science and sabermetrics has saved the A's quite a bit of money. Would you rather overpay on the FA market or pick and choose market inefficiencies to exploit?

    If the Pohlads really wanted to treat this team like a business, they would invest more heavily in data science and catch up with the sabermetric curve

    Coincidentally, a pitcher who is having problems with his control is more prone to hit batters and give up homers. In the larger context of his outing, this may not be the case, but young pitchers (hell, even old pitchers) are prone to short bouts of command loss.

    Great article-- this really helps visualize the system. Looking at the positional depth charts, if you could include, among other stats, each player's wRC+, that would be fantastic. Thanks a lot for this

    That's a fair point-- BB% is just as important to look at as well, however. Arcia has raised his rate by about 2% up from last year. To me, this is a positive sign to weigh against his contact struggles. We'll see how Vargas adjusts going forward, right now in SSS he has a 4.5% BB rate. I'm going to be watching that rate just as closely as his K%. Overall these guys are still early in their careers- there's plenty of room for adjustments going forward. This is a very exciting time to be a Twins fan

    K% alone is no reason for concern. I don't care how many times a guy strikes out as long as he A.) gets on base at a decent clip and B.) hits the ball hard when he does make contact. Adam Dunn made a career out of it. Thankfully, Vargas has shown both of those skills in his climb through the minors. Sano as well, to an even greater extent actually. I'm very bullish on both guys- adjustments will be made along the way, but I think we have a few very promising power pieces to compliment a variety of other skills on the roster.

    Amaurys Minier really looks like he is developing better plate discipline and putting together a fine year

    Don't look now, but Minier has doubled his walk rate. (up to 11.3% from 5% last year) Currently he's put up a wRC+ of 145-- that's producing runs at a rate 45% better than league average. 2013 wasn't great for him, but it looks like he is growing as a ballplayer. Very excited to see him advance

    Hicks definitely needs to see AAA before MLB. The pitching in AAA is much more polished than AA-- they can hit their spots and exploit holes in swings. It's important for Hicks to build his confidence up, and it seems that a AAA stint is the best way to accomplish that

    Thanks for this. What sets him apart (or at least gives me more hope for him) in my mind is his age. The kid is 23. Let's say he recovers from the injury responsible for his poor performance last year-- to me, they could have a very effective back end of the rotation option. Unfortunately we have several of those. Still, nice to get ANY kind of return on a trade where the Braves ate the contract of maybe the worst pitch framer in MLB history

    I appreciate that you took the time to look at this issue-- which, by the way, I agree, is an issue-- but this would have been more aptly titled as an apology to Astros or perhaps Marlins fans. Mauer, likely a future HOFer, is an enormously gifted player whose talent is universally recognized. I don't see the Twins as beneficiaries of the rule at all. Mauer is talented enough to consistently make AS rosters in the future, regardless of how rosters are chosen. Because of him alone, I just don't see how the Twins would be beneficiaries of the rule.

    Interesting read. I've always felt truly sorry for true Yankee fans, the ones who don't act obnoxiously and appreciate the subtleties of the game. They are easily overpowered by the douchey fans and can't really establish a separate identity of their own. As someone who has lived out east for awhile now, I've roomed with both types of fans. I hate the Yanks with a passion, but I still feel sorry for the silent minority of respectful fans who will always endure initial bandwagon skepticism when introducing their fandom to someone else. There are no bandwagon Twins fans where I am. When someone learns about my affiliation, they know I'm serious. It's a special luxury that I dearly enjoy. Yankees fans will never be able to know it. That being said, I still enjoy bantering with even the most close-minded NYY fans.

    I have a tough time keeping May in the top 10 given his performance this year, especially in light of his K/BB ratio. Do you still project him as more than a future bullpen piece? I personally have more faith in Meyer who is being pushed. Nice list though. Do we have anymore news on Kepler's return date? I'm really excited about that guy

    Isn't Ball a little more out of the picture for the Twins than guys like Manaea and Meadows (whom you profiled in the last couple days)? He is certainly intriguing. Is there a reason we haven't heard him mentioned alongside someone like Kohl Stewart?

    I appreciate that this is a blog, but these thoughts would also work well on the drunken rambling thread... agreed though, IMO there are some situations that call for bringing in your best reliever even if it isn't the 9th inning with a lead. For me though many of these instances come in the 8th

    Really got a kick out of this, thanks for posting. To add a note, when I hear "DJ Baxendale" I think of a medieval disc jockey who has huge raves at his castle every so often
