  1. That sounds like a reasonable plan. I'm very excited to see some of the talent further down in our system get it going this year
  2. Is Thorpe going to get any rest at all before the start of full season ball? I would really not like to overwork the kid, especially as he is developing
  3. Ha, ha. Yes, I am more than familiar with the policy. No harm was intended- though I do appreciate the depth of your stilted response.
  4. Yeesh. Pitchers and catchers can't report soon enough...
  5. Skipping winter ball is a little bit of a head scratcher for me, especially when the team recommended it. You would think after a season of struggles he'd be eager to improve his game. Maybe he just wanted to work out on his own terms, who knows. I will say, however, having watched him in person several times during the year, he has all the tools to succeed at the big league level. I've seen him turn on triple digit heat and pull it down the right field line, and I have seen him hit breaking stuff (struggles nonwithstanding...). He is athletic enough to make plays in the field, he just needs to find himself. Maybe some time off was all he needed. Let's hope he's a part of this team's future- he could certainly be a valuable asset.
  6. I personally like Sano more than Baez. Baez is older by 6 months and doesn't walk nearly as much. Sano has a better command of the strike zone, IMO. That's something that makes him more likely to have sustained success at the MLB level
  7. I know this is shallow but everything he says is discredited by that .765 OPS for Mauer. Absurd
  8. Good for him. He will certainly have his struggles at the major league level, but his confidence should help carry him as he improves his game. God forbid anyone in this damn organization show a little fire
  9. So jealous. Living in the northeast has its advantages and disadvantages
  10. I never said there was a right way. You are talking about owners, I am talking about GMs. I have more respect for a front office that creatively leverages its resources to make the most out of its means. It requires more creativity and thoughtfulness, in my opinion. There is no right way to win championships. That doesn't mean that you should be upset with the "irrationality" of someone who might appreciate the more subtle aspects of managing a professional baseball organization.
  11. You don't have to like (or dislike) the Yankees just because they (often unwisely) spend massive amounts of money on their team. Championships are championships, but personally I have a lot more respect for teams like the Cardinals or Giants that win through making shrewd moves rather than throwing money at players and hoping for the best (Dodgers, Yankees).
  12. Only one, total. Happened last season. I was sitting next to the dugout in New Britain and Sano tossed me a ball. Maybe it doesn't count, but I kept the ball as something very special to me.
  13. I feel as though TR has the tendency to speak rather conservatively or cautiously at times (and rightly so, I do appreciate his methodical approach). This was one of those instances. Here's what's important. We have no reason, as of now, to be any more alarmed about his elbow than we did when he got shut down in winter ball. If anything, we should be more optimistic given that he received a clean bill of health in mid December. This next check is part of the program he is on-- it is NOT a reaction to any newfound or recent tweaks. Everything is going according to plan. Perhaps he will require TJ, but we have no reason to suspect that more than we did at the beginning of December.
  14. I heard that one worked out really well, or something like that
  15. Really? We don't have a ton of cash tied up in future payrolls. I would have to think one of the chief benefits of this would be the ability to retain our own homegrown talent. Neither one of these kids is from the twin cities, but I would hope we would at least be able to secure their talents with Longoria-esque deals. It's still risky, but definitely worth it IMO. Now if you don't extend either one until they are near FA, then good luck. I believe the Twins should vigorously pursue extending these guys before they even hit arb.
  16. Well this was a rather unwelcome scare
  17. There's also a forum on this site, namely for asking questions about and discussing players.
  18. Just sent in my list- first timer here!
  19. Agreed. We ought to wait until he progresses further on his development curve before either trading him for an inferior return or mis-evaluating his true talent.
  20. Very nice post. A few numbers jump out at me. I don't want to derail this thread, but it seems fair to comment on this interesting data regarding one of our biggest sources of hope for the future. First thing that jumps out at me is age. Harper and Stanton were both younger than Sano at AA. Sano is still quite young for AA, but the observation stands. The best stat on that sheet, for me at least, is wRC+, which measures hitting and adjusts for league (and park, but only at the MLB level). In terms of pure hitting, Sano had a monster performance at AA, even relative to Harper and Stanton. 45% above league average at 20 years old is damn good. I really see a bright future for him, especially considering his BB%. With improved fielding allowing him to stay at third, Sano will be a huge part of the Twins future.
  21. Poor article, irresponsible at best. If you aren't a big fan of judging players by OPS+ to measure hitting skills, consider Ellsbury has only posted a WRC+ of 100 or more just twice in his career.
  22. I'm a tad weary of these stories concerning Stewart's makeup. They seem to be built upon a couple anecdotal remarks made by commenters that have snowballed over time. I'll reserve judgment until a.) it emerges as a problem in mainstream media b.) I have a personal interaction with the kid. Confidence is not a bad thing and will serve him well when he faces the challenges and adversity of the game.
  23. This is not entirely true. Luck can be a considerable factor in determining BABIP, but other factors like speed and quality of contact can play a role. Does it surprise you that Joe Mauer owns a career BABIP of .350? Michael Bourn comes in at .342, to name another relevant example. In any case, it is far too early to identify any sort of a baseline BABIP for Kepler. This is the nature of prospects. For what it's worth, I suspect he will bounce back with a strong year, provided he is healthy of course. Our minor league system is becoming more and more exciting to watch- a good omen for the big league club.
  24. Well he has two first names so we know we can't trust him! Haha, jokes aside, not knowing James isn't that big of a deal. You don't need to have read his abstracts to appreciate sabermetrics in today's game. I learned more from Tom Tango, or even just browsing Fangraph's library. (With that said, James is still the man) Parm's situation is a difficult one, to be sure. I'm of the mindset that we should still give him some time (read: one more season) to see what he's got. I believe that dealing doumit was a good step in this direction. Some guys are late bloomers- maybe Parmelee is one of them. Regardess, after this season, we should have a definitive answer as to whether or not he's worth keeping. The key to this is giving him enough ABs to prove himself. Some consistent playing time wouldn't hurt. Tough situation with the roster, but I have to imagine we can DH him a fair amount of time and cycle him in RF when possible.
  25. Easy there, tiger. I made no assertions about anyone, Arcia included. Though I do appreciate your diligence in digging up Arcia's minor league batting numbers. For what it's worth, Arcia played only 29 games in RF for us, while Parm and Doumit logged 68 and 32 respectively. Maybe you could tell us a little bit more about their defense by going back to their minor league OPS numbers
