The Mariners had no plans to use Desclafani in the rotation The Mariners didn't want to add to their payroll after making so many offseason transactions. About 29 MLB teams were interested in the Mariners cost controlled rotation arms. There's no doubt the Twins were one of them. I'm sure Seattle pitched Desclafani to all 29 of them, but obviously nobody was interested because he had poor results and has been injured. As a free agent, he was a MiLB contract kinda guy. I just cannot imagine Falvey being so incompetent he actually asked for Desclafani when the Twins did not need another back end rotation arm and there were so many other options going for cheap on the market. But faced with the option of having nobody else interested in Polanco's contract, Falvey accepted Desclafani and cash with the hopes it would work out in the rotation. This to me is the most likely scenario. Whether Falvey asked or was offered it doesn't really matter, he accepted. We'll just disagree that 28 other teams had such little interest in a 2B with a solidly above average bat on a 1/$10M deal to the point where the Twins where eating nearly half his salary to give him away. They got other players too ... They didn't give him away. Not saying I liked the idea, but they got more value back, theoretically, than they gave up, by value of prospects.

So Polanco had value and the Twins were forced to eat DeSclafani's salary in the deal.

IMO the Polanco deal wasn't about shedding salary, it was about turning him into spare parts. It looked bad at the time, it looks even worse now. The narrative that DeSclafani was a throw in, or the Twins had to take on his salary just to move Polanco, ect is just cope. chpettit19, Mike Sixel and USAFChief 3

Cooper has punched out in more than 30% of his plate appearances and benefited from a .391 BABIP, which could be red flags for the Sox and other interested parties, however.

Brandon Verified Member Posted April 29, 2024 Posted April 29, 2024 Nick you make some good points like Margot not being trusted in CF and Farmer not being trusted at SS but have you ever seen the Angels play? They are a team that goes and signs the big name and doesn’t have money left in the budget for depth. Comparing the two teams the Twins made the right call. The bench is performing at the far and wrong end of their bell curve of possible outcomes. I sure hope that evens out some. Last week it seems to against less good competition. On the good news side of things, Correa should be back any day as is Duran and Topa. Farmer will get a little more time to make a splash to keep his roster spot until LEwis comes back. Miranda is hitting like he wants to stay here. Santana should also be on notice with Miranda playing well. But I think things are evening out and it’s a matter of time before Cleveland’s offense slows and our picks it up a notch. We are back to 4th in the league in HRs.
