ashbury Verified Member Posted February 7, 2024 Posted February 7, 2024 No doubt there will be an actual/official article to come concerning our latest waiver claim. I had expected Bubba and Duarte to be DFA in favor of the newly signed Santana and Jackson. So that breakdown of the moves means that our FO prefers 31-year old minor league journeyman-with-control-problems Zack Weiss to Jordy Blaze. SMH. Dman, Vanimal46, Cory Engelhardt and 1 other 4
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2024 Posted February 7, 2024 One would say Jordy Blaze took a hit to the face today with the DFA news. chpettit19 and ashbury 2

So then that means that our FO prefers 31-year old minor league journeyman-with-control-problems Zack Weiss to Jordy Blaze. SMH. Not necessarily. Weiss will probably be DFA’d also. Balazovic was headed towards DFA sometime this spring. I am not sure about the timing but teams will have more roster space next week when they can put players on 60 day IL. Will it make it easier for a team to find space to claim him or will his waiver period end before that date making it more difficult? In any case, I don’t think he is ready to be on a major league staff that plans to contend and he is out of options. If claimed he will likely be available again. DJL44 and Dman 2
Twins_Fan_in_NJ Verified Member Posted February 7, 2024 Posted February 7, 2024 Balazovic goes to show just how quickly a player can go from prospect to an afterthought. If you would've told me in 2021 that he would be DFA'ed before spring training 2024, I would never have believed it. Danchat, chpettit19, big dog and 1 other 4
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted February 7, 2024 Posted February 7, 2024 Three DFA'd players at once? Seems unlikely they'll all be claimed. I'm thinking the Twins wanted to remove Balazovic from the 40-man, and they might have seen this shock-and-awe blitzkrieg of the DFA ticker line to be their best shot at keeping him. Perhaps they even only picked up Weiss to obscure their motives. I'm thinking it doesn't work. In any case, I'm not sweating it. Unless they're throwing absolute gas, every and any reliever that struggled with walks in the upper minors (and majors obviously) is off of my priority list. Twins_Fan_in_NJ and Dman 2

There really is no such thing as a pitching prospect. 😔 Another one bites the dust. Twins_Fan_in_NJ and Vanimal46 2
Rosterman Verified Member Posted February 7, 2024 Posted February 7, 2024 Twins didn't have much luck with Weiss when he was a minor league free agent back in 2019.
ashbury Verified Member Posted February 7, 2024 Author Posted February 7, 2024 In the interest of snark* I would like to point out that Balazovic was drafted in 2016 and thus under the prior, Total System Failure, regime. Our current FO held onto him for longer than I might have expected.** * Just one of the many fine services I offer ** And no, I don't know of a real pattern of FalVine playing favorites with "their own" prospects. Which part of "snark" did you not understand? stringer bell and Dman 2
jkcarew Verified Member Posted February 7, 2024 Posted February 7, 2024 The icebergs we have to navigate in 2024 are miles away, and yet we’ve already started to rearrange chairs on the deck. Timing seems odd with Balazovic…probably simply comes down to evaluating guys to be at the same level and preferring the one(s) that have minor league options, rather than one(s) that don’t…given that the expected role is emergency/fill-in. Then again, doing it now might increase the odds (still unlikely, IMO) that Balazovic slips through the cracks.
stringer bell Verified Member Posted February 7, 2024 Posted February 7, 2024 If Jordy Blaze is claimed, he has to be on a major league roster and can’t be optioned, that raises the bar for a claim considerably. Duarte and Bubba have options, so making space pertains only to the 40-man. I would expect a couple more teams will take that chance.
