gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 I was really surprised by this. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/38671694/kim-ng-marlins-general-manager-declining-2024-option She got the Marlins into the post season in a pretty tough division. Not sure if there is more of a back story here but I would have assumed they'd let her stick around longer.
Dave Borton Verified Member Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 I believe it's linked to the final sentence in the article: Quote Ng is expected to be linked to the front office opening with the Boston Red Sox, who fired chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom last month. GM -> CBO. The Athletic reports Ng's disagreement on baseball operations realignment: “In our discussions, it became apparent that we were not completely aligned on what that should look like and I felt it best to step away,” Ng said. gunnarthor 1
ashbury Verified Member Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 Yeah, the headline to this post seems to have it backwards. The team exercised their half of the mutual option for 2024, and she turned hers down. She also turned down their offer of a contract extension aside from the 2024 option. She quit. Riverbrian Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 Hope she lands on her feet somewhere. Her time in Miami has been successful. She is important... She needs to keep blazing that trail. Hosken Bombo Disco 1
Winston Smith Verified Member Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 Lavine leaves bring her in to replace him.
lecroy24fan Verified Member Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 She turned down the extension was not offered an extension and instead the Marlins picked up their end of a mutual option and walked away because she was being demoted and the owner would not let her make changes in the ops department.. I don't blame her. This is typical Marlins bs. One step forward, six steps backwards. Vanimal46 1
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 All the reports indicate they were basically demoting her, and that they wouldn't let her fire some old skewl guys.... So no real surprise she moved on. Not extending her after she fixed the team is insulting, let alone the rest Vanimal46 1

Jeff Passan tweeted yesterday the owner’s plan was to hire someone above her - after she just built the first team to make the playoffs in a full season since 2003. Anyone in her position would tell the organization to F themselves on the way out of the door. She will be off to way better opportunities soon. Mike Sixel 1

It's one thing to add a president position, I can see that business justification. It's a whole other thing not to offer that position to the current successful leader of the organization. At these levels its almost always a prelude to a parting of ways, and its very possible that it was on purpose to force her out on "her choice". Pretty standard business move unfortunately, no severance package needed. Vanimal46 1
