Rik19753 Verified Member Posted July 22, 2023 Posted July 22, 2023 One of the more frustrating aspects of this 2023 Twins teams has been the struggles in bases-loaded situations. Their traditional slashline in 85 PA with the bases loaded is ridiculously bad: AVG: .169 (Last) OBP: .212 (Last) SLG: .239 (29th) OPS: .451 (Last) These numbers themselves gives you more than enough information on just how bad they've been, but here are some crazy stats that drive home the point even further. ・The Twins have hit 9 singles in these situations. The Dodgers have hit the same number of grand slams. ・The Twins have 12 total hits. The White Sox have hit 13 doubles with the bases loaded. There are 5 teams that have hit more than 13 XBHs. ・20 teams have a batting average higher than the Twins slugging percentage. ・12 teams have a slugging percentage higher than the Twins OPS. ・There are 407 players that have more than 85 PA this year. Only 8 have a OPS under .451. glunn, nclahammer, Oldgoat_MN and 6 others 4 3 2
Nine of twelve Verified Member Posted July 22, 2023 Posted July 22, 2023 In a way I find this encouraging. In spite of being the worst hitting team in this regard we are in first place. Moreover, it seems unlikely that our performance with the bases loaded will continue to be this bad. So even with average production in those situations our run production should increase for the remainder of the season. Dman, Riverbrian, Fatbat and 5 others 8

The Twins are 8th in run differential right now, which is already decent; if they had average production with the bases loaded they would probably be somewhere around 5th. ashbury, Twins_Fan_For_Life and glunn 3
tony&rodney Verified Member Posted July 22, 2023 Posted July 22, 2023 Maybe the storms of ineptitude have passed over (regarding the Twins performance with bats). There are small signs. NotAboutWinning, Fatbat, Doctor Wu and 1 other 4

ashbury Verified Member Posted July 22, 2023 Posted July 22, 2023 It's so weird. (I'm obviously looking at the same page of stats as you are.) Man on third only? OPS is a reasonable .793 in 72 PA - better than their overall average, almost exactly MLB-average (.785) this year for this situation. Man on second and third? OPS .950 in 62 PA. All-Star good. Fourth in the majors. Man on first and third? OPS 1.112 in 91 PA - Hall of Fame good. We lead the majors. Man on first, second and third? OPS .451 in 85 PA. What the what? I really think this is "one of those things" due to small samples, that hasn't evened out yet in the course of time. What in the world would distinguish these scenarios from one another in terms of clutchiness? Dman, NotAboutWinning, Twins_Fan_For_Life and 2 others 5

Who knows. Equally crazy are the SSS numbers for some of the hitters we might like to acquire. Will they stand up? Yikes! Now I might be getting paranoid! The fact that we are this bad with the bases loaded and still in first place with an OK run differential is pretty encouraging. Just a little bit of improvement would go a long way in helping the offense break out.

MMMordabito Verified Member Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 And now it's even worse after Julien K'd and AK dribbled out with jacked bases.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 Add Vazquez' 6-2-3 GIDP to the totals. And Jeffers' walk off single with runners on 2nd and 3rd, for that matter. Crazy. ashbury and Dman 2
Oldgoat_MN Verified Member Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 As of this morning no team in MLB has given up fewer runs than the Twins. So, a positive note to even things out a bit Fatbat, RpR, ChermesZ and 1 other 3 1
