The Intermediate Value Theorem suggests that getting from 0 to 12 means going through 6 at some point along the way. Not necessarily for very long, of course.

True enough, but runs need not be a continuous function of time. A three-run home could jump us from 4 to 7 in one swing, no? Unless you count the seconds between when the second runner and the batter cross the plate.

Correct; counting those seconds makes it approach a continuous function in the limiting case; hence the theorem may apply.

What could really restore some faith would be a solid, well played (and managed) game against a clearly inferior opponent. The score will take care of itself.
