Good for the D-Backs for cutting bait, especially when they are still on the hook for a lot of money.

I don't want to make everything about the Twins, but if it were the Twins front office, I don't think they would be willing to admit their mistake and move on as quickly as the Diamondbacks did.

Nobody is going to want Bumgarner in their rotation. Someone might want to turn him into a reliever (lefthanded and breathing) but would probably want to make that conversion in AAA. I'm not sure Bumgarner wants to go back to AAA, he might just go home to his ranch. Maybe the Rays could convince him to sign with Durham.

I wouldn't be surprised if he just retired.  He's only 33 but a very baseball old 33.  He also went to Arizona basically so he could stay on his ranch.  I lived not far from his area of NC for a few years and heard a few stories about how low key country he is.  Considering he already has done the World Series thing a few times why would he go back on the road full time when he can just stay at his ranch?  If he was still chasing rings it might be different.

I bet he says, it was a good run, see ya.  And we rarely hear from him again.

One more I'm glad the Twins didn't go after and offer a large contract when he was clearly going down the backside of his career.

This team also paid Bundy and Archer to start games for them last year. The previous season it was Happ and Shoemaker. We can talk about the Twins avoiding the Bumgarner wall (they did) but you could easily argue they ran right into a different one.

Arizona is eating $34 million for one guy. The Twins at least have all those payments to Happ, etc. behind them.

Agreed. He’s got the rings, playoff clout, and plenty of money. Unless there’s something else he wants to prove on the baseball field he’s had a hell of a career. One that is eerily similar to King Felix Hernandez. Dominating the game in their 20s and running out of juice by 33.

Sure, the payments and a few miserable seasons...

$34M over two years right? This team is likely going to end up paying Kepler and Pagan (two guys they had every opportunity to move on from) $14M this year. I think it's weird to do a victory lap on Bumgarner when the Twins' approach clearly didn't work out either.

Pretty crazy how quickly he declined. Used up all of the good bullets in his arm during his 20s.

Understatement of the day!! Ages 30-33, 15-32 5.23 ERA 6.8 K/9 2.9 BB/9 (2.39 K/BB) over 69 starts...

But he'll have $140 MM in the bank to play on his ranch....

Yeah, pretty good comp. Felix had the higher individual peak, Madbum had the playoff success. Both in the hall of "very good."

Both have less of a HOF resume than Johan Santana, who fell off the ballot immediately.

That was a terrible contract. Madbum has actually been worth negative WAR with Arizona.

This thread isn't about the Twins FO and who they spend on. Keep it to topic, or start your own thread to discuss what you want to discuss.

The Twins tried that with Steve Carlton in 1987-88. But there just wasn't anything left. It happens to every athlete and it looks like it's Bumgarner's time. It's just that he has reached that point at a younger age than average.
