Grade the Sonny Gray Trade

The Twins finally made a significant addition to their pitching staff, acquiring RHP Sonny Gray from Cincinatti. Gray’s contract extends through 2023 (assuming the Twins pick up his 2023 team option).

Sonny Gray was not cheap as the Twins gave up first-round pick RHP Chase Petty from last year’s draft.

I'd give it an A. Traded from a position of strength in the prospect pool for a quality MLB starter on a good contract with more than 1 year remaining. Yes, Petty has terrific upside, but he's also an 18 year-old A-ball pitcher with significant risk. Only reason to downgrade it even a little is if you're convinced Petty is going to rocket through the organization and be an ace before he turns 21.

A healthy Sonny Gray should look better in Target Field than in the bandbox in Cincy. Buxton, Polanco, IK_F, and JD will help him as well. Now, is there any chance at signing Kenley Jansen?

B+ for now. Good pitcher, didn't give up overly much but... Twins need more to compete next year. Unless there a a couple other significant moves I just don't see the Twins contending and without that aspect this trade is rather pointless.

If the Twins are going to make a realistic move to compete in the next two years this is an A.

 

If they are going to half ass it, then they get an F.

 

I don't mind the trade but it would look a lot better if we had Berrios and a healthy Maeda.

I gave it a C. Feels a year too late to me. This is the kind of move they should've made going into last year. As others have said, if there's more moves coming the grade would go up. But as of right now I'm pretty neutral on it. It is nice to see them trying, though. Even if I'd still prefer to have signed Story in partnership with a move like this rather than trading Garver for IKF.

It's an A.  Prospects are a hope, a wing & a prayer.  Sonny Gray is an all-star on a team-friendly deal.  No brainer

I give it an A, I like it. Late is better than never. Sonny Gray won't solve all our problems but now we know that this FO can pull off a trade.
